aga98mtl··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
> we're doing a massive disservice to our young people which they will have to overcome for the rest of their lives.

Is this actually the case? Much of the most useful science & software comes from people educated in the Americas and Western Europe. I think that non-western schooling methodologies under-value problem solving and overvalue "raw" knowledge.

aga98mtl··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
How would this be possible? Do you believe that less than 50% of the population will get it outside of sweden? The lockdown cannot continue for a long time. The lockdown is just pushing the time frame by a few weeks. In the end the same percentage of the population will get it everywhere. Locking down is a short term solution to stall the contagion while the health system gears up to deal with it.
aga98mtl··on The world after coronavirus
A generation or two ago, people just ignored their children. They told them to go play outside until the sun come down. Now expectations have changed. These expectations make it impossible to have a decent amount of "alone" time during this quarantine. This renders many people unhappy. We love our children, but we can't handle having them with us 100% of the time. This has never been "normal".
aga98mtl··on Coronavirus clue? Most cases aboard U.S. aircraft carrier are symptom-free
It is possible there is large fraction of people who had the infection, but are not infected anymore. A serological would tell us the share of people with antibodies for this virus.
aga98mtl··on California’s housing crisis: how a bureaucrat pushed to build
The market has shown that there is extreme demand at the center. We need to build at the center.

There is a fixed amount of people at any point in time in a metropolitan area. Building at the center will not make new people appear. It removes people from the commuting crowd.

aga98mtl··on The Rise of “Movie-Set Urbanism”
While not perfect, this type of development is already a step-up above the unwalkable so called "power center". They have great upgrade potential when we'll figure out public transport. The parking lots closest to the walkable public strip can be turned into mixed use buildings.

Solving infrastructure and public transit problems is not the job of real estate developers. It is our job as a society. There has to be political consensus on how we want our communities to be planned. The developer will then do what they can with the rules we impose.

Unfortunately, the consensus is largely that we love cars. Maybe we should be paying for influential people to spend a month without a car in a walkable european city.

aga98mtl··on A former Egyptian engineer found the secret to building a big gas-station chain
A key point is that he gets a reliable stream of motivated immigrant labor to take good care of his stations. Normal owners who hire american teenagers will get worse results. This is why Shell is giving him the red carpet treatment to acquire underperforming gas stations.
aga98mtl··on Why It’s So Hard to Change People’s Commuting Behavior
I think the approach of blaming the individuals is wrong. It's society's fault that it is preferable to take your car. In places where there is successful public transit( NYC, Paris) you see high-density residential building within a walkable distance to a mass transit station. All the ground floors in the buildings around the station are retail business or offices. This makes it easy and convenient for people to use public transit and shop for food. Contrast this with your average american city where there is nothing interesting around mass transit within walking distance and very few residential options.

To fix public transit in America we need to build high density residential building around existing stations with shops on the ground floor. Then it will be rational to use public transit.

aga98mtl··on Many Japanese children refuse to go to school
I think that the social dynamics of being stuck with 20 to 30 same-age same-rank peers for many months is highly unusual. Only prison is like this.

In normal life, groups (Work, Family, social gatherings) are of mixed age, mixed experience, mixed rank. To become a better person, I had to forget the pettiness of High School social dynamics.

aga98mtl··on Alienated, Alone and Angry: What the Digital Revolution Did?
The average household size (persons) has been declining and the average house size (Sq.ft) has been climbing. The average person has certainly much more square feet for themselves.
aga98mtl··on I Can Tolerate Anything Except the Outgroup (2014)
> Either de-platforming "works" because it delays sectarian conflict, or it delegitimizes discourse altogether and just accelerates it.

I think de-platforming works because the targeted author is actually just an entrepreneur riding the "hate" wave for profit. If there is no profit to be made, then they have something else better to do. All these guys can host their videos themselves, however without a free audience they can't make money.

aga98mtl··on What Happens to Kid Culture When Streets Are Closed to Cars
Diesel car fumes smell bad. It's not an issue in Canada/USA because only bigger trucks use diesel. However, many European cities are full of diesel cars and polluting mopeds.
aga98mtl··on People Fall Off Cruise Ships with Alarming Regularity
I suspect a large amount these MOB incidents are suicide. Alcohol abuse and and suicidal thought are linked. ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2872355/ ) The lady in the article drank a lot and chose to sit on the railing of a private balcony alone.

Drunk people manage to die in shallow water with an alarming regularity. I wonder if it is even possible to save a drunk MOB in a calm sea. Stopping a cruise ship and getting a rescue boat ready to action must take a couple of minutes. Maybe a a drone could do it.

aga98mtl··on An Apology and an Update
This event made me realize I needed a good independent backup solution for Slack. I bought some tool to do it daily locally. I'll be able to move on to an alternative like Mattermost if the need arise.
aga98mtl··on AI Mistakes Bus-Side Ad for Famous CEO, Charges Her With Jaywalking
> How else could it be so certain of any given person's identity, in densely and highly populated areas?

I'm pretty sure this is a fake story planted to hype some technology. Facial recognition cant identify in the wild one person among several million possible candidates with enough certainty for sending out fines.
