This about had been empty long enough; I will use it for a book recommendation: Unsong, by Scott Alexander

http://unsongbook.com/

My guess is it will be the weirdest book you will have ever read.

If it is not, please, I am curious about what is your weirdest book :)

afiori··on One year of keeping a tada list
I think git keeps a per-branch history but in practice I have never seen it used
afiori··on Gpg.fail
I think it should be mostly ad-hoc methods:

if you have a website put your keys in a dedicated page and direct people there

If you are in an org there can be whatever kind of centralised repo

Add the hashes to your email signature and/or profile bios

There might be a nice uniform solution using DNS and derived keys like certificate chains? I am not sure but I think it might not be necessary

afiori··on C/C++ Embedded Files (2013)
which makes me consider an interesting distinction, undefined behavior refers to the behavior of the compiler output, does the C standard "allow" compilers to do compile-time code executions with undefined behavior? is the runtime behavior of the compiler even in scope for the standard in general?
afiori··on FFmpeg has issued a DMCA takedown on GitHub
IIRC at a point it was 6 line of code
afiori··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
I wrote in LaTeX for quite some time so, me.
afiori··on When compilers surprise you
I was not expressing an opinion on giant files, I was just postulating on why people dislike them.
afiori··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
The post office would identify you on access and hold mail for an appropriate amount of time.

Like for some deliveries you need to sign a receipt that will be legally binding, the post office would take the role of handling those.

afiori··on We invited a man into our home at Christmas and he stayed with us for 45 years
A reasonable solution is to get a free "address" from the post office with optionally phone notifications for mail
afiori··on Permission Systems for Enterprise That Scale
I only did a quick read of permit.io offering but iirc they don't focus on hierarchical data. If having access to a resource cannot grant access to unbounded number of other independent resources (eg sharing a folder) then almost all issues of the article disappear
afiori··on When compilers surprise you
Part of the issue is that it suggests that the code had a spaghettified growth; it is neither sufficient nor necessary but lacking external constraints (like an entire library developed as a single c header) it suggests that code organisation is not great.
afiori··on HTTP Caching, a Refresher
That sounds like it is one expiration bug away from debugging hell
afiori··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
You could do better than video compression because you could use older keyframes or a combination of keyframes.

I am pretty sure it might be np compete to find the best combination

afiori··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
Just saying but LLM-ese as the common dominator of how people wrote, it is likely the writing style of a lot of people
afiori··on We replaced H.264 streaming with JPEG screenshots (and it worked better)
I am almost sure that the most perfect solution would involve using a video codec protocol but the issue is implementation complexity and having to implement a production encoder yourself if your usecase is unusual.

This is exactly the point of the article they tried keyframes only but their library had a bug that broke it

afiori··on Garage – An S3 object store so reliable you can run it outside datacenters
I agree that it is a bad idea to describe rust this way but they likely meant memory safety as used in https://www.ralfj.de/blog/2025/07/24/memory-safety.html . Meaning that shared mutable is thread unsafe, I am unsure about Java and JavaScript but I think that almost every language on the popular memory safe list fails this test.

Again the statement is probably still untrue and bad marketing, but I suspect this kind of reasoning was behind it

Of course Rust technically fails too since `unsafe` is a language feature

afiori··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
For almost all purposes and users this is the same as saying "just close your eyes"/"just stay offline".
afiori··on Europeans' health data sold to US firm run by ex-Israeli spies
It depends if Google ranks all users' watch time the same or less profitable users are weighted less in the "algorithm"

If all users' are ranked the same then loyal adblocking users can still help a lot

afiori··on Progress on TypeScript 7 – December 2025
> product types A & B, sum types A | B

those are intersection types and union types and are much more unique and rare in type systems eg all typed functional languages have product/sum types but typescript is the only mainstream language I know to have unions and intersection.

afiori··on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig
If rust skipped async features I think it would not have damaged it much
afiori··on Thoughts on Go vs. Rust vs. Zig
I agree, I think they should have delayed it.

In a different universe rust still does not have async and in 5 years it might get an ocaml-style effect system.

AI embeddings can be seen as a very advanced form of lossy compression

It they had not messed up async it would be much better

Go is by default not thread safe. Here the author shows that by looping

    for {
        globalVar = &Ptr { val: &myval }
        globalVar = &Int { val: 42 }
     }
You can create a pointer with value 42 as the type and value are two different words and are not updated atomically

So I guess go is easier to write, but not with the same level of safety

afiori··on JSON Schema Demystified: Dialects, Vocabularies and Metaschemas
I might be wrong but that list is mostly libraries I think?

I agree that it is easy to implement a recent version in your own code, what I meant is that a lot of the tools/software you might want to use JSON Schema with (eg mongodb validation) only support old versions

afiori··on JSON Schema Demystified: Dialects, Vocabularies and Metaschemas
JSON schema is nice overall* but every software only supports ancient versions like draft 4

*even if I would prefer more transformation/conversion features that would bring it to more more a parser rather than only a validator

afiori··on Germany to classify date rape drugs as weapons to ensure justice for survivors
I still do not get what this has to do with whether judges act as a secondary legislature
afiori··on Lean4: How the theorem prover works and why it's the new competitive edge in AI
Lean/mathlib seems a fantastic system, but in my brief experience it fails in a way that is very common between academically oriented software which is the handling of scopes and names; For example some imports introduce definitions in your module scope (sometime transitively) others do not, automatic imports cannot be renamed or captured easily, the utility names/proofs that are created with new inductive types (like for injection etc) are hard to discover.

When learning a new mathy system I am usually very pedantic and while I am sure that these default were chosen intelligently and with consideration I would have liked if the system was more easily discoverable as a new user

afiori··on Germany to classify date rape drugs as weapons to ensure justice for survivors
Anyway this is a matter of judicial discretion to decide whether personhood and rights would apply to an alien visitor.

The only difference between precedent laws and codes is that the judges act as a secondary less stable legislature.

You could very well have a mixed system where legislature has to filter and ratify court rulings to decide which become law and which do not.

In short this has nothing to do with having actual laws

afiori··on Germany to classify date rape drugs as weapons to ensure justice for survivors
I am pretty sure that hunting laws would apply
afiori··on Helping Valve to power up Steam devices
The discourse is not valve good others bad, rather it is consumer/product focused good and next-quarter/short-term-profit focused bad.

With the context that a lot of modern enshittification, outsourcing, layoffs, anti-consumer practises follow from these short term approaches
