afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
Yep. But how does it compare to GPT-4 or Bing Chat? Then wonder how well GPT-5 will perform, and 6. Also, did rubber-ducking your query have a benefit regardless of the correctness of chat's answer?

Not right away, which is why I prefer bing over chatGPT (less tendency to get things subtly wrong and gaslight me). However I see no significant distinction between a hallucinating LLM and a person who made a mistake. It's something that the LLM engineers and the LLMs will work on every day. There are definitely some caveats but I maintain that less energy is required and I get faster and more tuned results than an SO post or trawl.

It is a studied phenomena what conditions are required for optimal growth and learning. Therefore it should be easy to synthesize a ciriculum for new developers with challenges pitched at the right level for them to reach their highest potential. Thick skin is no substitute for an environment with fewer assholes/abuse, not an ingredient required for growth.

I dont know about all that. But as someone who had just started with stack overflow (begun actually posting/participating)… it died for me the moment I discovered the GPT playground and eventually chatGPT. These days I use Bing Chat as my coding mentor. My theory is it takes less energy for the user to get what they need from an LLM tuned for code then any alternative. Luckily there will be users who have different needs than choosing the path of least resistence who ennjoy the community and challenges and I salute them, and looking forward to joining them when my needs change. It seems there are a contingent of people suffering "rubber band" effect where LLMs are concerned; "oh its just.."… "...hype...", "...boring...". No, it is AGI now already.
afarviral··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
I feel the number he generates via any procedure would be on the list since all of them are on the list. What am I missing about the plausibility of a procedire that must be possible which must generate a real number not in the series?
afarviral··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
No its not an odd or even number; its infinity.
afarviral··on Ask HN: I get anxiety working with computers
I had something similar and I visited a therapist who helped me see that I had created a narrative about certain locations, that they were making me anxious. I had to challenge this mildly delusional thinking while managing the anxiety using recommended practices from ACT therapy. Its almost like I needed permission to disregard certain thoughts as nonsense/narrative and also learn to struggle and fight less against uncomfortable feelings. Doing this ultimately makes them lose their power. If you were truly traumatized by previous computer use then a more appropriate strategy might be needed to combat the PTSD-like responses. Either way, I recommend seeing a professional.
afarviral··on Sounds emitted by plants under stress are airborne and informative
My very unscientific take is the noises are the result of a mundane mechanical process that is a consequence of the plant not having enough water or loss of water due to cutting, which leads to some cavitation bubbles forming. So it may only be as interesting as saying that your water starts "screaming" when it is being boiled.
afarviral··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
Is it not? Not at all? Doesn't its training data contain textbooks on psychology?
afarviral··on The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
My partner I found it gripping and unsettling from start to finish, and yet hilarious and heart warming and life affirming. It's a weird genre we decided; tragi-comedy. In some ways all the funniest bits were in the trailer, but the trailer doesn't really prepare you for the tragic parts.
afarviral··on My Dream Computer
My dream computers tend to be handheld personal organizers with secret backdoors to the internet or hidden hacking features. They usually have strange monochrome displays. I love these dreams and wake up with with an intense sense of loss. My android phone is a million times more capable but doesn't spark the childlike hunger I feel for my mystical dream handhelds.
afarviral··on The global health-care collapse
It may not be a conscious choice but an unconscious belief about themselves, such as that they are not productive enough, or that their feelings are not valid.
afarviral··on The global health-care collapse
Along similar lines, taking cautious mental health steps like learning about bounderies and emotional coping/regulation would help people to look after themselves physically (e.g. not drinking or eating their feelings). Being your own psychologist has risks, so counselling is a good alternative.
afarviral··on Four thousand weeks
Im having a water-shed moment where I have, picked apart my life's most dissatisfying areas. I was stuck on productivity and outcomes, even for others (parents and partner), but now I can do as you suggest I think. The intrusive thought that yet another dissatisfying aspect of life will arrise may just be a toxic thought that I can manage, or the only next thing to productively address.
afarviral··on Abuse of Discretion
Due to life's twists I have had to learn about abuse. In my reading to try to make sense of things I read about descretion, and how it can be abused. Its so obvious in retrospect, but interesting to contemplate.
afarviral··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
I was wondering about that. Maybe they know something we don't using inurl. To catch subdomaims maybe?
afarviral··on Show HN: A highly opinionated, fully functional Obsidian vault
It's almost the Noguchi filing system, in a way. Since you typically need to access things closer to the top/front which will be the most recent.
afarviral··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
I personally like the idea of fully legalized drugs, but I don't necessarily think they should be allowed to be imported and sold, at least not directly. There's a "middle way" that frames drug use in term of health, but it shouldn't be legal to profit from people's addictions.
afarviral··on New Zealand bans young people from buying cigarettes for life
Nah, this policy rocks. No one who is already addicted to smoking will suffer as they ratchet the age so that existing smokers can continue to smoke. If you really want to try/start you can bloody well learn to cultivate it yourself and no one can stop you. It was signed, sealed and delivered within a liberal democracy. Kiwi here.
afarviral··on The silent struggles of workers with ADHD
Quite a similar experience to me. After a change of meds I had a bought of intense disphoria and anxiety which I (perhaps falsely) attributed to the meds after 9 years of use and misuse (insufflation etc). I stopped cold turkey until my special authorization expired and haven't used them since. It is a relief in some ways that my overall as methylphenidate is quite hard on the heart and addictive, so it got me through the quitting phase. I've found other ways to get by with my ADHD; diet, sleep, caffeine, environment etc. Its possible the meds had already helped to establish the patterns of concentration too.
afarviral··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
Maybe this is why my Windows just leaves me to it maybe.
afarviral··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
I'm just not having any of the problems people are experiencing and I'm on the latest Win 11 (22H2). It hasn't changed my file associations or popped up, or stolen focus, or advertised anything to me and it gives me valuable information about how long my computer will be inaccessible if I update it, and lets me choose when. I replace the task bar (explorer patcher) and start menu (open-shell) and I have "do not disturb" on constantly, if that helps anyone. Windown and I just leave each other alone.

I'm not trying to call anyone out. I'm sure the negative experiences are genuine. However, it's worth pointing out Microsoft made some progress in improving things for some users, despite shockingly poor choices (task bar, I'm looking at you), and dark patterns for some users. It's still the closest thing to the "best" OS for a personal computer, depending on what things are important to you in the moment. I want that to be GNU/Linux/BSD but for me the FOSS OS' are just too distracting (always some sort of config chore needing to be done to address screen tearing, or why the touchpad won't work, or how to get the bluetooth stack working, or how to keep the configs in sync between machines, or how to reliably store and back up my files). It's an unfair playing field.

I used a GNU/Linux flavor (debian -> Ubuntu -> OpenSuse -> Arch) as my primary OS for around 5 years, before the build up of cortisol became too much.

afarviral··on Crypto is dead – Yanis Varoufakis
I came to this conclusion (somewhat) independently: Crypto (the algorithm) is good, crypto-as-decentralized-currency is (currently) bad.
afarviral··on Show HN: I created a Chrome extension to help keep good posture while browsing
Yeah, this would be so cool. Even just as simple as a period of relaxation/curl followed by a period of upright/stretch or something. Love the plugin btw, it's very easy to use, though I can already feel my muscles going in to spasm from being so rigid.

I have trichotillomania. Something that could tell me off for doing that, would be HUGE. I genuinely tie my arms to my arm rests so I can't reach my hair.

afarviral··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
But the paper the butter/lard is packaged in contains PFAS/plastics, or you can use something else... packaged in plastic! The entire supply chain is polluted in the name of efficiency/cost (reduction of spoilage, less weight etc) and most people live in the most populated places where it's not possible to source diary directly from the animal in to a glass receptacle. A personal change to use glass is something I'm doing and many might want to consider, but so much of the problem is systematic. "Just use glass" is good, but insufficient.
afarviral··on Show HN: I created a Chrome extension to help keep good posture while browsing
Heh, I like this. But I also keep reading that simply holding "good" posture is not helpful, and that changing position (including to slouch, recline, rest on a elbow etc) protects against muscle spasm from holding the same position. I suppose this implementation could help with that too though. Slouch a bit, get reminded to lean back, repeat etc.
afarviral··on Why Unreal Engine 5.1 is a Deal [video]
Its already a cooler name _for_ the metaverse if you think about it. Welcome to the unreal.
afarviral··on Show HN: Using stylometry to find HN users with alternate accounts
Im tempted to use it to find likeminded friends :)
afarviral··on You can program functionally in any computer language
I code in this style. I can tell a lot of things started going right when I adopted the style too. Instead of global variables I have a single config which I initially pass around to functions, then I refine and pass only the data each function needs. The config generally doesn't get mutated. Testing is easier. Functions are easy to reason about. I keep functions to a dozen lines or so, but not to the same neurotic level uncle bob presribes. Likewise a few extra arguments are fine, but too many usually signals a new type is required or time to compose a new function which utilizes the function whos parameters are growing.
afarviral··on How crypto goes to zero
That's a good argument for continuing to explore cryptocurrency-adjacent tech (or simply programming, if you like), but not necessarily purchasing and promoting the use of cryptocurrencies.

There is a confusing entanglement between the thoughts about the technology vs the thoughts about actually doing financial transactions with it. I have admiration for the developers and awe at the websites, games and services that were spawned, the technology. As a financial construct it's a perfect storm for exploitation; human nature + unregulated hyper-capitalism = bad.
