afarviral··on Most people with addiction simply grow out of it (2014)
Could the gradual impacts of economic downturn, unemployment and unhappiness post-pandemic be a contributing factor? From available data on drug overdoses and homelessness things appear relatively stable but some data from last year is missing. An uptick may be on the cards based on your observations. I'm curious what specifically is to blame in your view and why other factors seem unlikely? What do you suggest should change? Should the drugs be recriminalized? Or is the current strategy okay but needing some supplimentary steps?
afarviral··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
Yeah, this seems obvious to me. However, out of ethical concerns, it is not obvious that the solution is to stop educating people.

Perhaps just reminding would-be parents that if the educated and resilient stop reproducing, they are depriving the world of a thriving and resilient new generation. A clear directive that under-population is a growing concern and a few additional incentives for parents would go a long way too.

Taking a philosophical angle, why is it the "right" choice to serve our genes, the economy, or to create a younger generation to care for the elderly? It is not unethical to unburden oneself of those obligations today, but you can imagine a future where it is.

afarviral··on Trunk-Based Development
Nothing is lost in git without great effort. Deleting a branch is simply removing the label from the history. Just take note of the hash of the latest commit on the "deleted" branch. It'll still be there and can be checked out in detached-head mode.
afarviral··on The growing inequality of who gets to work from home
Who wouldn't agree that difficult work should be payed more? Work that requires the acquisition of skills should be payed a bit more too, no? There should be a system in place which determines the appropriate compensation, not arbitrary compensation as determined by the market.
afarviral··on Antidepressants or Tolkien
If you got a good score, was it due to drug or tolkien knowledge? Or evenly both?
afarviral··on Yann LeCun: AI one-percenters seizing power forever is real doomsday scenario
Really? What are some examples?
afarviral··on Grayjay from FUTO [video]
Trying the app out. Initial thoughts:

- It's not on the appstore (yet?), so I am going down a risky path requiring trust in a website.

- Hmm it's nagging me about backups and needing access to my storage... oh and it wants a password? But I don't want my backup password protected...

- Great interface though!

- Where can I import my existing subscriptions?

- It's slow to search my enabled platforms, but not too bad.

- Video playback is instant and seems to be blocking ads by default (is that a good thing for content creators, big philosophical question?)

- Chat and all the extra options and less-opinionatedness is great for me, but would be over a normy's head

- Playback is supported with the screen off, what I would expect, and great! Sorry youtube red.

- This came at the best time now that youtube is detecting ad blockers in my region... intentional?

- I wish this was on PC/browser as well

- Okay, I'm ready to pay... how? The option to pay is non-existent in this release seemingly

- How does this benefit content creators currently making a living from the specific platforms through ads? Seems like it would jeopardize their existence if this took a significant share of viewers.

afarviral··on “Digital Shields” used during Train upgrade
There's something really tenuous-seeming about such a software driven safety mechanism, comparing to things like laser safety sensors on commercial cutters which are a much simpler mechanism. I'm curious how safety expectations are managed/projected for a system like this.
afarviral··on Tell HN: Enterprises spend 10x more to build no-code solutions than coded ones
This had been my experience as well. You can replace the low-code solution with a junior coder in a non-coding role. Creating a shadow-IT solution will be a fraction of the cost and time. The risks are the lack of governance and amateurishness, though. Solution: have vertically integrated agile teams so that developers are in the problem space with experienced peers and governance. Why don't more orgs do this?
afarviral··on Maccarone: AI-managed code blocks in Python
This is a GPT-4 generated post huh? Hallucinating to the days.
afarviral··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
I've been doing this too, but saying to myself "you are off the hook altogether" with the reasoning that the harm from not attempting something is just so much worse than any typical consequence from saying or doing something dumb in the moment, to the point it needn't even be a consideration. But I like this approach of focussing on intention, to rationalize it.
afarviral··on Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
I can relate to this. I have totally lost track of what I was about to do during the process of opening an application countless times. I shudder to think of the many lost ideas and sparks of genius.
afarviral··on LazyVim
Haha 1-2 hours ... Maybe things have improved since 2018 but I was up to about 25 hours and still not satisfied with the results. That might be just being a perfectionist or coming from another IDE and trying to replicate something. But 1-2 hours is not a reasonable amount of time to set aside to set up a truly usable custom ide with neovim to acquire the knowledge to drive it.
afarviral··on Learning to Touch Type Again
You are absolutely right.
afarviral··on Learning to Touch Type Again
Right, so it may not be so much about the supposed superiority of an alternate layout but about learning the layout well, which is hard to do once you have a decade or more of bad habits. That's a new take for me, having switched to colmak-dh (and training qwerty and even getting much faster on it at the same time).
afarviral··on Learning to Touch Type Again
You use your index finger to type C on a Qwerty row-stagger board. Its actually an advantage of row-stagger that the most dextrous fingers have access to multiple keys less than a key unit away. In saying that I just learned colmak-dh on a columnar 36 key board and I am happy typing C with middle finger. I would say there are some factors that were not considered with these supposedly ergonic column-stagger and alternative layouts, such as something I term psychological contrast; the more distributed layout of qwerty (not optimised for home row) enhances the distinctness of movements, compared with pressing keys next to each other where the differences betweem them (contrast) is low. I also think that alternative layouts and ergonomic boards tend to discourage overall motion or encourage holding muscles in spasm, rather than the more chaotic/increased motion of less efficient layouts which provides opportunities to release tension via more varied motion to avoid injuiries! For anyone with RSIs, I would suggest working on ways to release muscle spasms (e.g. with hand stretches or subtle motions that can be incorporated while working, or by using the mouse sometimes! I know, blasphemy right?).
afarviral··on Revolt: FOSS Discord Alternative
Please yes. This is the killer feature. To solve your issue all you need is an otional modal to confirm joining. The idea is that you are joining a room not having a phone call. This enables things like joining by yourself while other participants join.
afarviral··on “Fractureiser” malware in popular Minecraft mods and modpacks
This is highly annoying/intentional timing as Minecraft 1.20 just got released but now it is tainted with fears of viruses and extra steps to mitigate. For a friend who streams minecraft content and relies on the income this is a big setback and extra-risky for them if their account secrets are stolen.
afarviral··on Writing summaries is more important than reading more books
This made me chuckle. Too true. I would only argue that thinking/journalling deeply about fewer ideas is an equally good use of your time as tasting a greater breadth of ideas more shallowly.
afarviral··on One man's rare Alzheimer’s mutation delayed its onset
Really! My piss must really stink then... bzzzzz
afarviral··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
I intuit the same given the jumps we've seen from gpt 3.5 fo 4. The next jump will feature considerably more general intelegence than any one human being, though I think it will have certain weaknesses.
afarviral··on Language models can explain neurons in language models
Its not designed to reason but it does reason. Thats whats so impressive about it; emmergent properties like factuality and reasoning.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
I didn't consider that but its already begun with plugins and auto GPT. LLMs can test their hypothesis. Next, that might be possible via robotics... so scifi.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
unfortunately the way web search is implemented in bing chat kind of hamstrings it from that point forward. You miss out the LLM extrapolating from a million other scenarios accross the subject domain in order to come up with possible explanations or approaches. Likewise it is not searching every page multiple adjascent topics to find something on the web that is deeply burried or going by another name because of resource constraints.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
Defending myself, the lazy programmer: realtime feedback is a proven condition which improves learning. I'm not sure why I would use SO if LLMs continue to improve as I can even debate with it and it encourages me to define my problem and chunk my work. If they remain at their current limits, maybe, sometimes I will need expert advise from a human, but I dont see them slowing down so that seems like wishful thinking on my part.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
Is it specifically human-human contact thats required to generate new insights or document things? I see no major distinction between that and human-LLM contact (aside from awe) or simply an intelligence pusuing a goal by itself for that matter.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
I'd like to know this too. Its concievable that most new web content would be output from an LLM so it would just be feeding on itself. That precise outcome will never quite happen as people will transform and validate this output. However, I see sense in a general worry that people "won't bother" if LLMs can do it all easier than a person. Conversely I also see the potential for it to bootstrap for even greater potential human expression, learning and applied thought.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
Yes, quite a convenient lie if you ask me. Why try to address abuse and mistreatment when you can label it character-building!?
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
I wonder if the very nature of LLM emergent correctness and intelligence itself will identify weakness, fallacies and illusion? I would expect a well-read person to be similarly immune.
afarviral··on Stack Overflow Is ChatGPT Casualty Traffic Down 14% in March
I find it best to use it with it framed as an untrustworthy black box, even with the increasingly correct answers. Its a rubber duck that can spitball with you.
