aetimmes··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
* because there are people who, due to age or immuno-compromisation or allergic response, cannot safely take the vaccine, so those who can safely take it should help contribute to herd immunity

* because there are many people out of work whose livelihoods depend on the types of establishments closed or restricted by COVID (restaurants, theaters, etc)

* because safely interacting with other human beings in-person is generally good for mental health

aetimmes··on New political polarization casts rivals as alien, unlikable, contemptible
But (at least in the US) the leader of one side doesn't - not enough to condemn it.
aetimmes··on ACLU sues Minnesota for police violence against the press
>I couldn't imagine someone being against a police Union and also supporting civilian unions. They serve the same purpose.

My local electrician's union doesn't have dispensation from the state to utilize lethal force on me or my family. Also, if I'm wronged by an electrician in the course of their work, I can expect a fair result from the justice system. The stakes are different.

>So you acknowledge that it's difficult, terrifying, unpopular and requires great reasonability, but offer nothing for a solution.

You never asked for a solution. Your comment stated that the solution was to join the force; I merely pointed out that your solution doesn't work. If you want to shift the goalposts and put the burden of supplying the solution on me, then I invite you to seek out and listen to some of the changes asked for by the protesters - external checks and balances like citizen review boards for PDs.

>Once again, do you have any decent solution or do you plan to just add to the stress of this critical and thankless job?

Given how vocal the Blue Lives Matter crowd is, I'd hardly call being a police officer thankless. There are plenty of people who still think/believe that cops are infallible, shining knights of justice who can do no wrong, and if they do, well, that person had it coming anyway.

aetimmes··on ACLU sues Minnesota for police violence against the press
I think you underestimate just how wildly the police will protect their institution in defense of a perceived threat. Joining the force is not the path to change; dissenters in the ranks get punished personally and professionally in defense of the blue wall.

It's unpopular to be a cop because by and large, cops have a tremendous deal of power (compared to an average citizen) and very little keeping them in check.

With great power comes great responsibility, so the saying goes.

aetimmes··on HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus vs. Gen10 Hardware Overview
Two situations come to mind:

1) Several appliance machines were in a cabinet with water-cooling doors attached. The doors restrict the airflow from the front of the cabinet to the back to the point where there isn't sufficient airflow to cart away the heat from the CPUs. The engineer responsible for those particular systems played show-and-tell with the melted plastic pins that formerly held the motherboard in-place for a month after the machines crashed.

2) An 8-year old rackmount machine had a power supply fail spectacularly and light the entire server on fire. Fire suppression was triggered in response. Several other adjacent machines were damaged but the fire stayed relatively contained to the one cabinet.

aetimmes··on HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus vs. Gen10 Hardware Overview
Speaking from experience, it is much, much, much more feasible to reach the burning point of wood or the melting point of plastic in a datacenter than the melting point of the metals used in server construction.

One of the jobs of the case is to contain a fire if it starts. A plastic case wouldn't do this, and a wood case would actively be hazardous.

aetimmes··on HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus vs. Gen10 Hardware Overview
> All you need is a wireframe made in wood or plastic

Wood burns, plastic melts. When you have a bunch of racks full of a bunch of servers undrler heavy load, managing the environmental temperature of the datacenter is very important.

aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
Making the claim that parental leave is zero-sum assumes that I'd be working at full productivity for those 6 months, which based on my current sleep schedule even without work obligations, I definitely wouldn't be.

My employer can either pay me for 6 months of work and get a substandard work product while I suffer sleep deprivation, or they can pay me for 6 months of leave and get me back recharged and ready to work at the end of that leave, when my child is sleeping through the night.

aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
In my case, I get a paycheck from my employer as usual. I'm not sure how the specifics work; my employer might pay a premium to a private insurance firm and receive reimbursement from the firm when employees go out on leave so that they're not paying salaries of people who aren't working for them. But at any rate, the cost of providing this leave is similar to other non-mandatory benefits provided by a company (like health insurance), which gets rolled into the cost of doing business and likely gets passed on to our customers.

My wife's leave comes from our state's short-term disability insurance program, which I believe draws its funds from state taxes.

aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
I don't understand the question. Can you elaborate?
aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
If I could afford it, absolutely. In reality, my mortgage and other financial commitments would likely have necessitated me going back to work.

What we likely would have done instead is staggered my wife's medical leave with a shorter chunk of my own PTO rather than both of us being home at the same time, and put the baby into childcare earlier than we're currently planning on doing.

aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
It's been a pretty amazing workplace benefit to have. My wife and I remark to each other on a daily basis about how lucky we are to be able to be home together to take care of the baby. We're planning on having at least one more child and I can't see myself working for a company that doesn't have a similar leave policy.
aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
I was/am an IC on a medium-sized team. I had a project I was the primary contributor for within that team that I've handed off to my teammates to continue (after writing up documentation and doing some knowledge transfer).

I occasionally log in to read my email to keep up-to-date with happenings among the team, but I haven't needed to respond to anything since I went out.

Our team made an effort in the last year to reduce some of the silo-ization of knowledge and increase our 'lottery factor', and I think those efforts have helped make sure that the team was prepared for one of us going out on leave. At the very least, nobody has called me up saying "hey, your systems are on fire!", so that's been nice.

aetimmes··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
I'm a US male who's 1 month into my 6 months fully-paid paternity leave with our first child.

My wife has roughly 4.5 months between banked PTO and FMLA/disability leave.

I'm sitting at home right now watching/changing/feeding our baby while my wife is out at doctor's appointments taking care of her health. Having the flexibility to practice a modicum of self-care without neglecting the health and happiness of our child has been such a huge boon to our family.

If anyone has any questions about the experience, feel free to ask.

aetimmes··on Gitlab More Than Doubles Valuation to $2.75B Ahead of Planned 2020 IPO
They've positioned themselves as an all-in-one package for every tool you'd need to implement a devops software development workflow - source control, continuous integration/deployment, etc. Existing enterprises pay different vendors to implement all of these things; new and growing companies (in theory) just need to buy a GitLab license.
aetimmes··on Thunderbird 68.0
It appears to be a significant enough rewrite that no upgrade path from previous versions is available.
aetimmes··on My Home Lab Server with 20 Cores / 40 Threads and 128 GB Memory
Right, but the distinction we're making upthread is not Intel vs AMD, it's consumer CPU vs server CPU.

You can get out-of-band management with Xeon motherboards, or with Epyc motherboards, but you're likely not going to get a motherboard with out-of-band management with a Ryzen CPU or a Core i[3579].

aetimmes··on My Home Lab Server with 20 Cores / 40 Threads and 128 GB Memory
I rebooted a series of Oracle SPARC machines a couple of weeks ago that took about 20 minutes to boot/self-test.

Servers are built to be reliable. It is better for them to boot slowly and correctly than quickly with silent memory failures.

aetimmes··on My Home Lab Server with 20 Cores / 40 Threads and 128 GB Memory
Original parent comment was talking about installing a Ryzen consumer CPU, which is generally mutually exclusive with any board manufacturer (SMC, Dell, HP, or otherwise) that provides any sort of baseboard management controller.

Some of the SMC boards listed support i3 processors, but generally, if you want a BMC, you're stuck with enterprise-grade processors.

Terrence's own recounting of the event [1] seems to contradict you:

aetimmes··on Is 4 GB the Limit for the Raspberry Pi 4?
Depends what you mean by "similar in spirit", but there are a smorgasboard of single board computers and self-contained computers out there at a multitude of different price points.

If you're looking for just a small computer, the Intel NUC is a good place to start.

aetimmes··on Ask HN: Best free compute and other resources for startups?
I feel like Heroku got left behind in the current k8s craze but they're still a good choice for a lot of use-cases, cheap MVPs being one of them.
aetimmes··on Ask HN: Best free compute and other resources for startups?
Reasons this might be a bad idea:

* Electricity costs for networking/compute hardware often equal VPS costs

* Massive single points of failure WRT power, compute, networking

* ISPs don't like when people run their businesses over consumer networks and will retaliate (forced to change to business plan, account terminated, etc)

* Vastly increased overhead managing the full infra stack (power, HVAC, networking, compute, firmware, OS, etc)

* Massively increased security liability (your site goes viral and now Hacker News and Reddit are sending traffic to your house, on the same network where your personal laptop with your CC info saved on it lives)

XaaP services abstract away so very many of these concerns for prices that oftentimes are below what you pay for the electricity to run your own infrastructure.
