aeharding··on Ask HN: What happened to server-side rendering?
I've had great success with Vue's builtin SSR -

https://vuejs.org/v2/guide/ssr.html

Great for FB/twitter share scraping, google scraping, etc. Also much better startup speeds.

Once you get it configured it's very little additional work to maintain.

I have it set up to do things like determine mobile/desktop depending on the `user-agent` to determine the prerendered page to serve, and then the client side JS takes over depending on the viewport size and will either a) Rebuild (less than 1% of the time) changing the markup from desktop->mobile of mobile->desktop or b) Continue happily

aeharding··on We Lost Our Ability to Mend
I got a late '70s blue Singer 20U recently for parachute rigging. But I've become interested in sewing and repairing other things (like work bags) more recently. It's fun to learn. These old sewing machines are amazingly easy to repair and adjust. The manuals are wonderful, too!

It's my prized possession. It will definitely outlive me.

aeharding··on Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard
30 minutes? You're quite patient. If it took longer than 5 minutes on the phone I'd probably call my bank.
aeharding··on Cancelling Dropbox Pro is hard
Pro-tip: Sometimes you can get lucrative deals on Prime during checkout if you don't have prime.

For example, I've gotten multiple 1 month free trials, and also the '1 week for 1.99' which you can immediately cancel after placing your order for a $1 refund (if you immediately cancel, not at end of the week).

I don't shop at Amazon often, but I've gotten many (read: > 10) Prime shipments over the last year, probably paying a grand total of $3 or so.

If I don't have any good Prime offers upon checkout, I'll go to Ebay, find the product, soft by lowest price, and it's usually the same price, or within a dollar or so, and ships a LOT faster than Amazon.com's standard shipping (usually ends up coming from Amazon anyways proxied by the Ebay seller with Prime).

I've gone through the Amazon cancellation pages many times. They always keep tweaking it and expanding the process.

aeharding··on I have magnets implanted in my hands
It's not any amount of bitcoin I'd miss. Just kind of for fun. I guess I could encrypt it with some passphrase that's easy to remember, but I haven't bothered. Honestly I'd be impressed if someone retrieved the bitcoin.
aeharding··on I have magnets implanted in my hands
I've had a programmable NFC tag embedded in my right hand, between my thumb and pointer finger for the last 5+ years.

I forget about it for a month or so sometimes. It's neat, I guess, for storing a small amount of text information (bitcoin private key, stuff like that). Can read with any NFC capable phone.

aeharding··on Why parking minimums almost destroyed my town and how we repealed them (2017)
An interesting city to look at parking is Madison, WI. Because the heart of downtown is physically restricted by an isthmus, there are many public parking ramps.

aeharding··on The Intl.RelativeTimeFormat API
A lot of sites use a `title` attribute to hover to see the absolute timestamp. I'm surprised HN doesn't do this.
aeharding··on An Update on the Security Issue
Can you provide a source? According to https://hiya.com/privacy, contacts "don't leave your phone".
aeharding··on Stripe Billing
This was very unclear from the email. Here's what I got:

> Since you used Stripe Subscriptions in the past year, the Stripe Billing Starter plan is included in your current pricing.

Which implies you're opted into the Starter Plan with the regular 1+mil fees.

aeharding··on Stripe Billing
I also am confused. I've made sure that Stripe will not send any emails directly to my customers (disabling emails for successful payments, refunds) since I integrated with Stripe's webhooks for my own custom emails. Is there now some other option that I have to turn off for CC update emails?
aeharding··on Stripe Billing
First $1 million for the lifetime of the account I assume, not per year?

Seems odd that they announce a fee increase without any notice to existing customers.

Also I found their wording very confusing - I had a few seconds that I was very worried I'd have to migrate something or other. Poor communication wording on Stripe's part. C'mon, guys.

aeharding··on Progressive web apps are coming to iOS 11.3: Cupertino, we have a problem
Just like a native app, the process requires user approval ("add to homescreen" vs "install"). A large difference, however, is that native apps go through Apple's approval process.
aeharding··on Deep-copying in JavaScript
EDIT: I am wrong. Below quote is irrelevant. I misunderstood the term "pass by reference", and confused it with mutable entities.

It is for objects, not primitives.

> JavaScript has 6 primitive data types: string, number, boolean, null, undefined, symbol (new in ES6). With the exception of null and undefined, all primitives values have object equivalents which wrap around the primitive values, e.g. a String object wraps around a string primitive. All primitives are immutable.

aeharding··on Are Honey Nut Cheerios Healthy?
I'd argue cereal isn't healthy. Fry or hard boil an egg or two in the morning instead.
aeharding··on Some publishers are fighting AMP with “View Full Experience” link
Google promotes AMP sites on search results. They have no choice.
aeharding··on On managing outrage in Silicon Valley
I know a handful of plumbers that love their job (hours/pay/flexibility), and they're pretty awesome people.

"Nobody wants to do a job where money/effort-done is very low" is a generalization.

aeharding··on On managing outrage in Silicon Valley
Are you saying that women are too good for plumbing, but men aren't? That's pretty sexist.
aeharding··on Ask HN: Starting a project today, which web framework would you use?
Node + Vue
aeharding··on Go Long on Web Components
Are there any good ways to keep your data in sync between a model and the DOM with Web Components? Something similar to what Vue or React have?
aeharding··on Black Tesla Model 3 release candidate spotted driving in Silicon Valley
They have a ramp up period [1], so I'm pretty sure they expect production issues. All car manufacturers have problems with the first ones of a new model rolling out of the factory, and I don't think it'll be any different with Tesla.

aeharding··on Ask HN: What does your company do to keep you motivated other than pay?
No reason in particular, but I like it because it breaks the work-from-work week up.

The important thing is that the whole team is WFH the same day so we can depend on other days for meetings and whatnot, and nobody feels left out when they are WFH.

aeharding··on Ask HN: What does your company do to keep you motivated other than pay?
Core hours, WFH day (Thursday team works from home, although you can take other days on a non-regular basis), 40 hours per week max set by boss.

Treating me like an adult with a life outside of work, basically.

aeharding··on Ask HN: How long did it take to release your side project in 2016?
I believe I got my first client by posting on Reddit, and from there it organically spread by people sharing it.

It is a side project though, and I'm not under pressure to acquire customers.

aeharding··on Ask HN: How long did it take to release your side project in 2016?
9 months: January to September. It took 2 weeks after launch to get the first paying customer.

The product is a SaaS progressive web app for budgeting. It's $12/year for the premium version.

The main challenges were adding the last few features, making it production ready, and polish. The 80-20 rule really applied here (it took 20% of time to get 80% of the way), and that's only for the MVP! I still work on the app almost every day. :)

I'd say the hardest part now that I have many customers is not breaking anything for those existing customers.

Just a note - you can host your own CI node (runner) for project(s) on gitlab.com. It's super simple to setup, too.

https://docs.gitlab.com/runner/install/linux-repository.html

aeharding··on Blue Ocean
Also notable is services like docker-in-docker (and privileged docker containers) are allowed, which is a huge win over services like Atlassian's Pipelines.

Without dind, it's really hard/annoying to us CI/CD to build docker images. But with Gitlab, they also provide a place to store docker images (the "registry") right next to your code, for free!

At work, we're investigating moving to Gitlab for everything except issues (which we'd need to keep on JIRA for now since we're so embedded with it). It looks like Gitlab does have some integration with JIRA, but it's project-level, and it would be nice if it could be group-level since we have many small repos. :)

(I don't have an affiliation with Gitlab, I'm just super happy with the service.)
