adventureloop··on Childhood amnesia kicks in around age 7
I have several memories from before 3. The earliest I can pin down is my second birthday. I can distinctly remember the cake (Thunderbird 2) and running around, looking at the bon fire in our garden.
adventureloop··on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 pass 10% market share, Windows XP falls below 30%
Maybe, but 8.1 killed all of our VS2005 projects. If you are a developer that doesn't want to do upgrades on potentially fragile build files it is not a god send.
adventureloop··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
Would the answer of the inverse question be interesting? Taking our successful landing page, how would you reduce downloads?
adventureloop··on Why we removed bosses at Treehouse
I would imagine if the solo project benefited peers greatly, they could still score well in the peer review. Think of someone building a powerful internal tool.

It does mean that any endeavor that doesn't produce quickly would be a bad candidate for a solo project.

adventureloop··on Coinbase Bitcoin Wallet App Gets Axed From iOS App Store
I don't think that is the case. With the banking app from RBS I can perform bank transfers and even pay money to contacts. Apple surely can't be getting a cut of that.
adventureloop··on Brilliant or insane code?
> Errors per LOC is allegedly constant, across all languages.

This implies that more expressive languages(more expressions per line) are less prone to errors.

You conclusion would be correct if he had stated that error per expression was constant between languages.

adventureloop··on Why am I being endorsed for skills and expertise I do not claim on my profile?
I received a phone call at work from someone trying to sell JRebel, after all the recruiters that call through to the office(doesn't look good) I had to hide my linkedin profile.
adventureloop··on “Weird Paranoia” at Valve, Says Former Employee
I despise this UI trend, if I really want to read a page I will jump into Chome's Inspector and fix the CSS. Otherwise I navigate away.
adventureloop··on Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 crashes at SFO
Yes, okay maybe not on holiday jaunts. Before you can board a helicopter to an offshore platform and have to don a survival suit. With the risk of the helicopter flight being so high it is not really something complained about.

I think we can draw a lot of parallels between helicopter flights to offshore platforms and a shuttle into space.

adventureloop··on OpenGL – OS X Mountain Lion vs. Mavericks
Apple only expose the OpenGL bindings via Cocoa. There are many libraries that will expose OpenGL for you. [SDL](http://www.libsdl.org/) and [GLFW](http://www.glfw.org/) are the two most prominent.
adventureloop··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in the Bay Area, what's your annual salary?
From my experience(graduated last year) the range people from my class took was 16-32k.
adventureloop··on Camino browser reaches its end
CMD-Arrow (left, right,up,down) will move you to the beginning of the line, end of line, start of document, end of document respectively. I really miss these keys when I am on windows as I find it much less of a hand movement to do.
adventureloop··on Show HN: Zerobox – a small lightbox
Chrome on my iPad, the demo button doesn't do anything. When I long press and 'Open in new Tab' the demo page opens.
adventureloop··on “Printcrime” by Cory Doctorow
You probably should have read the first line of text on that page.

> This story appears in my collection Overclocked: Stories of the Future Present, 2007

craphound.com has been Cory's website for as long as I can remember.

adventureloop··on EA Sports Developer Calls Wii U 'Crap' and Nintendo 'Walking Dead'
As noted at the bottom of the article this seems another case(see the ms fiasco) of employees not realising they always represent their employer.

These two scenarios do a lot more damage to the public reputation of the companies. I don't think they can respond in anyway without taking more flak.

This sort of commentary seems to belong in private places to me, what a strange world.

adventureloop··on I have accepted a “part-time partner” role at Y Combinator
I think for app.net this can only be a good thing. Even if Dalton does loose some of the time he could be putting into the platform the early stage visibility it gets will be a huge boost to the community.

It is still a bit of a shame that those brought in to ADN via YC will be more of the same. I would love to be able to move some of the awesome people in the game dev community over to ADN.

adventureloop··on Pebble Raises $15 Million as Wave of Smart Watches Arrives
I would go as far as saying I am cross dominant, but I certainly have a weird mix in that regard. I tend to take watches off as soon as I am stationary (I've lost a few F-91W's this way). I guess you could just take the watch off when you sit down like myself.

Though to refer to your original comment I don't think you are too concerned either way.

adventureloop··on XKCD 1190 is now more individual frames than there are XKCD comics.
If only they could find an old shed door to cross the river.

The similarities between this ongoing xkcd and _why's most recent publican are really interesting. Thematically I find the stories very similar, they feel as though they come from the same author to me (I know Randall is not _why). Their choice of delivery also come to mind.

I am very happy there are more dedicated people than myself in the world, otherwise I would miss out on these stories unfolding.

adventureloop··on Actually eat healthily for £1 per day
All of the tables indicate the use of kcal as the unit. The fact isn't spelled out in the text, but this comment seems more like a pet peeve in terminology than an accurate criticism.

It occurs to me, that if all the parts in a conversation understand the correct meaning pedant-ism can be left aside.

adventureloop··on John Carmack starting port of Wolf 3D in Haskell
You should try Galaxy on Fire 2.

The trend seems to be towards difficult 3D controls, but you cannot write off the entirety of 3D games because you haven't seen good samples.

adventureloop··on Show HN: My friend's project to simulate an entire C. Elegans
I love the internship application page http://nemaload.davidad.org/jobs. The author does expect any candidate to be perfect before meeting, but sets out a small set of criteria for any potential candidate to research.

Probably in the process of researching any of these topics a potential intern would gain a good understanding of the upcoming internship.

Sometimes I wish job interviews were laid out like this.

adventureloop··on "I can't do math" (2001)
I think you have hit this point on the head. It is very hard to compare mathematics education between countries. Eastern Bloc countries seem to go a lot further with the secondary level mathematics education, my point of caparison is to Scotland cavet emptor.

I am constantly embarrassed by my level of mathematics, I like to play with 3D graphics on the weekend.

adventureloop··on Why I Develop For The Mac
In OpenGL you can use CoreGraphics to render into a context and convert that data to a texture. This could be done for each string, but doing so you loose the power of the underlying implementation. If there are libraries that make this easier I am yet to come across them.

Wolfire have written a very good blog post about the issues with text rendering and OpenGL. http://blog.wolfire.com/2013/03/High-quality-text-rendering

adventureloop··on Manchester City Council
Well that really clears things up for me, thank you. Site is still pretty horrible though.
adventureloop··on Manchester City Council
Complain all you want, but http://www.aberdeen.gov.uk doesn't exist at all. For the third city in Scotland I find that really embarrassing.
adventureloop··on The OpenBSD 5.3 Release
OpenBSD has been the model for opensource software release engineering. Their presentations on managing their releases are always worth a look. In 2013 regular quality releases are quite common, but OpenBSD has been releasing on schedule from the time of Debian's four year release cycle.
adventureloop··on Avoiding Burnout
I can't comment about NZ,but in the UK the 37.5 hours work weeks are a 8:30-5 or 9-5:30 days with an hour long lunch. The number of hours goes up by 5 if you factor all time actually spent 'in office'.
adventureloop··on RTFC is the New RTFM
I really dislike having to go into source code to figure out basic functionality. This is confounded by the amount of uncommented code. For a lot of the cases one or the other will do. No your shader is not self evident.
adventureloop··on What happened to Japan's electronic giants?
It is true that Japanese studio created some of the greatest games of all time. But I have also heard reports that every game was rewritten from scratch. The DIY concept was entirely alien.
