Indeed.

>One thing that programmers don’t care about. They don’t care about money, actually, unless you’re screwing up on the other things... You do have to pay competitively, but all said, of all the things that programmers look at in deciding where to work, as long as the salaries are basically fair, they will be surprisingly low on their list of considerations, and offering high salaries is a surprisingly ineffective tool in overcoming problems like the fact that programmers get 15″ monitors and salespeople yell at them all the time and the job involves making nuclear weapons out of baby seals. https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2006/09/07/a-field-guide-to-d...

adt··on Trump to accept 600k Chinese students, sparking uproar among conservatives
Reminds me of the Aus Prime Minister:

>Mr Morrison said the announcement followed a discussion with his wife Jenny the previous night and after he considered how he, as a father, would want his daughters to be treated.

"Jenny and I spoke last night and she said to me, you have to think about this as a father. What would you want to happen if it were our girls?" he told reporters.

“Jenny has a way of clarifying things. Always has. And so, as I’ve reflected on that overnight and listened to Brittany and what she had to say.”

Mr Morrison said he wants to make sure "any young woman working in this place is as safe as possible, as I would want for my own daughters".

The Prime Minister was later asked by a reporter why it took discussing the alleged incident "as a husband and father" to take further action.

"Shouldn’t you have thought about it as a human being? What happens if men don’t have a wife and children? Would they reach the same compassionate conclusion?" she asked.

Steve Jobs: 1984 Access Magazine Interview:

In 1977 you said that computers were answers in search of questions. Has that changed?

Well, the types of computers we have today are tools. They’re responders: you ask a computer to do something and it will do it. The next stage is going to be computers as “agents.” In other words, it will be as if there’s a little person inside that box who starts to anticipate what you want. Rather than help you, it will start to guide you through large amounts of information. It will almost be like you have a little friend inside that box. I think the computer as an agent will start to mature in the late '80s, early '90s…

You’d start to teach it about yourself. And it would just keep storing all this information about you and maybe it would recognize that every Friday afternoon you like to do something special, and maybe you’d like it to help you with this routine. So about the third time it asks you: “Well, would you like me to do this for you every Friday?” You say, “Yes,” and before long it becomes an incredibly powerful helper. It goes with you everywhere you go. It knows most of the raw information in your life that you’d like to keep, but then starts to make connections between things, and one day when you’re 18 and you’ve just split up with your girlfriend it says: “You know, Steve, the same thing has happened three times in a row.”

adt··on Ask HN: Would you get a CS degree today?
While we're wandering down memory lane, here's a good one by Joel Spolsky (remember him?): 'Advice for Computer Science College Students' (2/Jan/2005)

https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2005/01/02/advice-for-compute...

The moral of the story is that computer science is not the same as software development. If you’re really really lucky, your school might have a decent software development curriculum, although, they might not, because elite schools think that teaching practical skills is better left to the technical-vocational institutes and the prison rehabilitation programs. You can learn mere programming anywhere. We are Yale University, and we Mold Future World Leaders. You think your $160,000 tuition entititles you to learn about while loops? What do you think this is, some fly-by-night Java seminar at the Airport Marriott? Pshaw.

The trouble is, we don’t really have professional schools in software development, so if you want to be a programmer, you probably majored in Computer Science. Which is a fine subject to major in, but it’s a different subject than software development.

No.
