adrianscott··on Django 1.5 release candidate available
Just tried out StreamingHttpResponse and it's looking great. The User model should work well w/ the MongoEngine project (for MongoDB and Django), I'll look at upgrading it to support that.

upon what data do you base this assertion? you can have entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial activities in anarchy. you can definitely do so without a police force, a fire department and employees.
adrianscott··on Outlawed by Amazon DRM
Am I the only one who will take Amazon's action and level of customer service into consideration when deciding on a cloud hosting provider, Amazon Web Services vs. others?

Accounts are accounts on Amazon and will they link a consumer account you or your developers use with an account you use for hosting business web sites on EC2?

Or, reading the blog entry, will they mistakenly link another account with your other Amazon accounts, including the one you use for EC2?...

adrianscott··on How A $19 Million Movie Makes $150 Million - And Still Isn't Profitable
I've read that these days many theaters only get 10% of the ticket sales for the first week or so at least on major films, (before dropping substantially, combined with much shorter runs. So the theaters get less than they used to as far as i know, especially that first week or so.
adrianscott··on The “Restaurant Wine” Pricing Model & Why We Doubled Subscription Prices at Ryze
Thanks! We started out w/ $9.95, which I personally preferred... At some point we moved to $10, but didn't really A/B test back then like I am more into these days. My expectation is that $9.95 was a better match for our offering/branding etc. I think the $0.05 difference is large psychologically, especially for a monthly subscription. We also had many subscribers supporting the site more for social benefits than purely business value, so I think that'd be consistent with that as well.
adrianscott··on Life as a Service
"I spent some time researching the emigration options. A lot of time actually. And I’ve found out that the place where I live is in spite of all of the above probably one of the best places on earth to be living at the moment. It’s shocking! Half the world or more of it would be more than happy just to trade with me, and they’d be absolutely right."

If you can earn a first-world nation without having to live there, something quite possible in tech, there are a number of countries where many folks can be quite happy and more free. And remember you don't have to just stay in one country, you can travel around a bit and sample countries also.

I made the move and it was the right decision to me, imho.

adrianscott··on George Gilder: Capitalism is based on information and knowledge, not greed
"Microsoft won that one, despite loosing." (sic)

please explain?

adrianscott··on George Gilder: Capitalism is based on information and knowledge, not greed
humans have time. that is a form of capital.

humans have needs.

there is no shortage of customers.

before currencies, there is trade. who is the customer in a trade before currency? it's an exchange, not a purchase by a customer from a seller.

adrianscott··on George Gilder: Capitalism is based on information and knowledge, not greed
Yes, it gave them an impulse to find areas where they could do something that people judged valuable enough to part with their money. (e.g. learn how to design web pages and make bad flash animations ;)

It also did help people who buy groceries, including poor people.

adrianscott··on George Gilder: Capitalism is based on information and knowledge, not greed
Thanks, have you found that Hayek incorporates technology and the flow of technological knowledge? I'd love to see a ref on that. I recommend checking out the book The Origin of Wealth as one ref that has a nice coverage of tech/knowledge in a behavioral economics context.

adrianscott··on Attain the cutting edge - Let's build science-technology country (North Korea)
'Not familiar with Computer Numerical Control? You obviously haven’t been to North Korea lately...

For almost two years, citizens of North Korea have been exposed to a lengthy campaign extolling the virtues of CNC.

The song, called "Attain the Cutting Edge," is "available on karaoke machines nationwide" and the lyrics "include reminders that CNC is 'an example of self- reliance and strength' and that 'the people’s pride is high…let’s build a science-technology great power.'”'

adrianscott··on Jack Dorsey’s 28.3% Square ownership gives him 75% control.
This usage of the word 'control' in this article seems very different from how it is typically used in the tech industry, even misleading.

Normally when we're talking about a minority shareholder having control, it is as a result of multiple share types with different voting rights (as in Facebook, Google, News Corp, etc.).

The assumptions also should be really clearly labelled, to also avoid misleading people. "there is an assumption that each shareholder is as likely to vote one way as another" is a huge assumption that is essentially based on zero information, whereas information is typically available for a particular company. It's worse than the assumptions behind options pricing models using Gaussian (so-called 'normal') distributions, imho.

adrianscott··on Spare me your puny little Coding Contest, earthling
Clever idea! I would always want to compensate (and have ip paperwork in place) for anything i'd use for financial gain.

I think it's a great way to get part of the addressable segment of developers. Probably don't want it to be 100% of one's recruiting efforts. Actually there could be a nice paper in this for a psychologist or sociologist, hehe.

adrianscott··on A College Bubble So Big Even The New York Times And 60 Minutes Can See It
"and then there was the 60 Minutes piece, hosted by Morley Safer which focused on PayPal founder Peter Thiel‘s attack on the college bubble. The piece was, of course, strongly biased. It was a venerable old dinosaur hosting a venerable old dinosaur in order to defend a venerable old dinosaur."
adrianscott··on Ask HN: Help - I've hit a wall.
This makes sense.

Your project is too big. Get a smaller piece or version working that does something useful for someone.

Don't refactor code.

Just get something small(er) working.

adrianscott··on 500 Startups Raises New $50M Fund, Adds 4 New Partners. 250 investments to date
n.b.:

Markets aren't efficient in any space ;)... (review the assumptions required for an efficient market, so see how reality violates all of them with consequences, or just look at the empirical, historical data; also see behavioral finance literature).

All existing investors/shareholders are diluted in new rounds, almost always. And all shareholders -- including investors -- in high-tech startups are minority shareholders (less than 50%), with the exception of single founders early on, typically. (Minority shareholders, investors especially, still have certain rights.)

I hope these notes help!

adrianscott··on Open Source VLC media player 2.0.0 is out
First off, VLC is awesome, and VLC team are heroes, imho.

I ended up having to go back to 1.11, as it ended up choking on the 1080p60 files my vidcam produces, though at first, for a minute or two, it worked better than 1.11 win32 (where i have to slow it down to 67% speed to get smooth playback).

The u.i. changes (removal of slow down and speed back, and see playback speed) threw me for a moment, but then I saw I could customize the u.i. really easily, which was great.

Can't wait til the day it can tap into my Nvidia GPU (460), but i know that's a non-trivial problem.

Anyhow, overall, congrats to the team, and I look forward to some additional upgrades so I can tap into the new features.

adrianscott··on A Moment of Clarity in the Pursuit of Happiness
Great sentiments. I would question this part though: "A final thought: On average, you have 78 years total to live." That is based on questionable assumptions imho, that there are not going to be dramatic increases in life expectancy within one's lifetime.

Perhaps we should be thinking more long-term than we are... ;)
