adonnjohn··on Ask HN: Tech crowd – What are your ideas for solving gun violence using tech?
While it remains between a rock amd a hard place, people will be killed. I know that you're trying to steer the conversation towards the forum's purpose, but I'm not sure technology has anything to do with it, anymore than technology can stop the globe from increasing in temperature in its current state.

One of the gunmen was stopped within 60 seconds. People still died. Unless the tech can precisely point out terrorists before they leave the house, it risks being just a bandage. Even if it did, what whitepaper could possibly give you the confidence that the system's tolerance is effectively adjusted? That's some iRobot level stuff, and that was... not without quirks.

It'd probably be easier to just change the dang government.

adonnjohn··on Activision Blizzard has moved billions of dollars of profit into tax havens
I just wish they would go back to making satisfying games.
adonnjohn··on DSVPN – VPN using TCP at port 80 and 443
Thanks for the resource! It's always a pet project to try and set it up, so I never researched any install helpers very heavily. I'll definitely try this next.
adonnjohn··on You Know You're in a Big Company When...
IBM offers are notoriously under-market in America for junior to mid level engineers
adonnjohn··on DSVPN – VPN using TCP at port 80 and 443
I'm glad it's not just me...

I've tried 3 separate times now to set up the necessary pieces. I get all the way to the end and it just... doesn't work. And I'm just not a good enough network engineer to sniff out why.

adonnjohn··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
And it was. Does anybody really believe that the damages caused by the hack was only in the tens of millions? That information is precious and the moment that it's stolen, it's stolen for good.
adonnjohn··on Ohio passes energy bill that bails out nuclear and coal plants, guts renewables
I can't wait for the news to spin how saving the planet isn't fiscally responsible.
adonnjohn··on [dead]
Even after reading the full post, I had to research the site to figure out where the satire line was...
adonnjohn··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
Any suggestions or recommendations for those attempting to improve those nontechnicals at earlier stages in their career?
adonnjohn··on What Happened to 'Miegakure,' the Game That Promised the 4th Dimension? (2018)
This article didn't really say that much, aside from that the game still isn't out and still doesn't have tangible details about a release.

I really do hope to play it one day, but I'm starting to think that the game is on a death march and will end up unsatisfactory no matter what. I am eagerly waiting to be proven wrong.

adonnjohn··on Vim Is Saving Me Hours of Work When Writing Books and Courses
I generally agree as somebody still fairly new to development. I'm about 6 years into focusing in computer science, and early into the process I heard about vim and emacs. I knew that it wouldn't be necessary to use either while going through undergrad, but I decided to learn enough vim to be functional just because I wanted to understand.

Vim still isn't my exclusive dev editor, but it has almost become my exclusive terminal editor. Learning older technologies may not always be top priority, but it can do a large amount to enrich your personal perspective- particularly if you discover the niche where its usefulness is best utilized (and like you mentioned, if the amount of time to get up to speed will save you proportionate future time).

adonnjohn··on One Year in San Francisco as a Software Engineer
I'm not from the Bay Area, but I think you present an interesting point. Is it possible that we don't have developers in government because they would prefer to focus on developing?

The type of people that end up spearheading campaigns and taking leadership positions tend to be too busy with new priorities to continue previous activities. Managing staff, setting and achieving goals across a variety of disciplines, and ...leading may take the place of the inspiring moments that help justify their existence as a developer, especially overtime. It takes a specific type of person to want to take or make that change.

Though software folk are exploding in numbers (source: am one), perhaps further care and attention is needed in balancing the social skills, creativity, and growth of tenacity of those that are attempting to improve their development abilities. Particularly if we want to create techies that are smart as a whip and can also hold public office effectively.

adonnjohn··on Ask HN: Scolded on a job interview for not namespacing
I can't imagine a universe where a well-qualified senior developer would be so obsessed with such a pedantic thing. To call the code unreadable because it needs a small refactor... that interviewer was clearly letting their emotions guide their thought process. Advise why to use the namespace, hear what the interviewee has to say, tie off the discussion, and move on.

"Rockstars" who can't teach do long-term damage to engineering culture.

adonnjohn··on FBI secretly collected data on Aaron Swartz earlier than was thought
I really am open to listening if you have any tangible ideas on why more than 3 would fix or help deter bipartisanism overriding checks and balances
adonnjohn··on Facebook’s Clear History privacy feature is still months from launching
Imagine the legal liability if they found legitimately dangerous trends! They probably have simple ways to reference the IP address of where that data came from; they probably have a user id correlated to each data record. Their policy is one of those 'technically the truth' statements that is gravely overshadowed by other events that have transpired.
adonnjohn··on FBI secretly collected data on Aaron Swartz earlier than was thought
How does that not just become another check to balance in this bipartisan mess?
adonnjohn··on Tesla sues its alleged saboteur for $167M
Could you elaborate a bit on the whistleblower stuff falling apart?
adonnjohn··on Ask HN: What to do after $8M (all cash, post tax) exit?
Obligatory "pay my student loans"

In all seriousness, mutual index funds. Watch it grow. Secure your grandchildrens future.

adonnjohn··on Google Tried to Patent My Work After a Job Interview
STEM and humanities sit hand in hand nowadays. STEM to turn needs into realities, humanities to effectively manage relationships/expectations across every level of stakeholders.
adonnjohn··on Sales mistakes that software engineers make
So to summarize (for my own understanding)... It's fine to want to build something first. However, if you want it to be financially profitable in a big scope of impact, you have a higher chance by plotting it out and then executing, than accidentally stumbling upon a perfect business model for your completed product.
adonnjohn··on When Adolescents Give Up Pot, Their Cognition Quickly Improves
We should start a war on drugs and check back in in 40 years.
adonnjohn··on Copyright Office Adds DMCA Exemption for 'Abandoned' Online Games
Does this open the door to future debate surrounding variations of game versioning as time continues forward?

Let's say Blizzard does implement WoW Classic, but they choose a specific permutation of classic that makes some people happy and others angry. Do those who wish for variant A of WoW classic but get a drastically different variant B have any legal leg to stand on for their version of the game being abandoned?

adonnjohn··on Why almost everyone was wrong about Tesla’s cash flow situation
3 months net?
adonnjohn··on Someone turned BrettKavanaugh.com into a resource for sexual assault survivors
To unearth evidence and prove causation, there must be a robust, unrestricted investigation by an independent third party.
adonnjohn··on FAA Moves Toward Treating Drones and Planes as Equals
I appreciate the bit about looking into other firms in the supply chain, as I hadn't thought of that whatsoever. I'll start looking into how I fit entry level reqs for safety critical software roles. Thank you for the advice!
adonnjohn··on FAA Moves Toward Treating Drones and Planes as Equals
Will definitely add this to my study list. Thank you for sharing!
adonnjohn··on FAA Moves Toward Treating Drones and Planes as Equals
Thank you for the advice! Been out of school for about a year now, but that class was my favorite by far.
adonnjohn··on FAA Moves Toward Treating Drones and Planes as Equals
Tangential - any advice for software devs looking for entry level experience in the industry? It's a topic I'm passionate about and would love to branch into, but I started in computer science and don't have any aerospace experience.
