adonese··on Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account
>Epic are obviously going to lose, and lose hard, or set a precedent that's going to screw every payment provider in America and open a flood gate for fraudulent payments.

Users have always been (and still are) subject to all kind of fraudulent. It is about the freedom to do whatever you want with your computing device. The idea that Apple has an absolute control of what goes in into their mobile devices, and that they can claim whatever policies they see fit scares me.

Neither apple nor anyone should have this control.

adonese··on What Does 1GB of Mobile Data Cost in Every Country?
In Sudan (where I live in), numbers are a little bit different.

I'm currently using Sudani, the cost of 1 GB is 20 SDG. To USD that roughly equals ($0.14, with rate $1 = 140 SDG). The numbers are the same for MTN, or slightly less since i recall it was 15 SDG.

In office we are using an unlimited Wimax plan [1], and that costs us like 1800SDG / month ($12). For 4G unlimited plan, that is like twice the cost at roughly $28.

I was reluctant to use whatsapp and other chatting apps up until two years ago. voice notes have been really annoying for me, and for so long i have been literally ignoring them! Now with this corona i started to use chatting apps more regularly and at times i get really lazy to write so i will just voice note.

i still struggle with them though

adonese··on Guide to Concurrency in Python with Asyncio
There's this really interesting blog post Im not remembering about nodejs and async concurrency style as compared to golangs one. I cannot remember the author's name, but it goes into length as of comparing async functions and the differences between normal regular func and the async ones, and calling async func only on async scope and so on. Only I remembered I found it retweeted by Brad Fitz. I though maybe someone could guide me to it here

Location: Sudan, Africa

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: Yup, very welcome

Technologies: Go and Python. I mostly do backend stuff but i worked with different technologies and it is always a welcome to try new technologies.

I'm a software engineer with great passion to programming. I cofounded Solus a startup that does payment processing in Sudan, Africa. With my startup i had to work in different positions and variety of domains (heck, even business development, procurement and marketing). I'm passionate about coding itself, that's probably why i preferred startup path over big corporates.

I do backend stuff mainly in GO, but i also maintain our android codebase, our POS code (in C), and our payment web portal (Angular). I'm good at managing scarce resources, see through the problems and deliver on time.

adonese··on Go Developer Survey 2019 Results
It has gotten more fixes in the last couple of releases. I now in situation where it works in vscode as it used to with gopath. But yeah that was very painful
adonese··on Python programming is drowning in red tape
> Type-annotated, asyncio-enabled Python hardly resembles the easy-to-understand language I fell in love with back in 2006.

I'm all with this, but you can pretty much use python without touching these at all. They have a niche business use cases. E.g., when you work on large projects and you want to catch some errors to not be in the runtime.

async was very needed to be able to write performant web servers such as nodejs.

I'm not using python as i used to, and i think the language is getting more complex, and i'd definitely vow for more fundamental changes to the runtime. But if you ignored all of that, python is still remain python. And when your business logic gets more complex, it is imperative your code becomes more complex and you get to discover and use more "language advanced features". The good thing they are available, they are not perfect, but they can be of a good help.

Nice.
adonese··on Ask HN: Have you been infected by Covid-19? What is it like?
I'm really grateful you're getting better. I had a very strong flu two years ago, it was the toughest flu (or any diseases) i ever had. I fall apart and lost conscious three times, the cough was very strong that i wouldn't be able to breathe for a few seconds. It was really terrifying experience, and from what i read it is quite simialr to covid-19 symptoms.

For the throat issue, we use hibiscus (hot) with ginger. It really helps a lot to relief the pain and ease your breathing.

adonese··on Apple now allows iOS developers to send ads using push notifications
I turn off all notifications except for sms and calls. And even for sms, i muted most of the operator promotional sms. The urge to check for the phone and the demand that you have to check for this notification was killing me. Surprisingly enough, some people would go nuts when seeing a kid nagging in demand of certain thing, while they are totally ok with their apps doing the exact same thing and even worse

It comes with a gotcha though, as i sometimes check some chat apps awaiting for response, but the good thing is when that happens i notice it, and it is not the norm.

adonese··on LightSpeed: Rewriting Messenger’s codebase for a faster, smaller, simpler app
i use telegram web and it is awesome. Messenger web just sucks, i don't why actually, maybe it is because of the design. I have not checked the others (signal, wechat).

tl;dr web clients are probably more performant than their electron counterpart

adonese··on Google Chrome's fear of Microsoft Edge is revealing its bad side
I have been using gmail for quite long time. It is getting ridiculously terrible these days (in the past couple of years I guess!)

My old laptop fans go crazy when I launch chrome. It’s too much heavy for a mail client.

It’s remarkable how we suck at writing software in the past years.

adonese··on Today I learned that not everyone has an internal monologue
Fun fact: i do think while i'm asleep! my friends were shocked when i first told them about that. I don't know how to describe it, but i can think, alter my dream, reason about things, etc--and i used to do math and solve coding problems too.

the worst part is that my dreams are too tough. when i'm sad or something things get very rough on my dreams because everything seem so real.

adonese··on The Email Zuckerberg Sent to Cut His Cofounder Out of Facebook (2012)
In case you just want to skip into Zuck email part

“This email should probably be attorney-client privileged, not quite how to do that though.

Anyhow, Sean and I have agreed that a price of one-half cent per share is the way to go for now. We think we can maybe almost justify and if not, we'll just deal with it later.

We also agreed that if the company bonusing us the amount we need for the shares, plus tax, is a good solution to the problem of us all being completely broke.

As far as Eduardo goes, I think it's safe to ask for his permission to make grants. Especially if we do it in conjunction with raising money. It's probably even OK to say how many shares we're adding to the pool. It's probably less OK to tell him who's getting the shares, just because he might have adverse reaction initially. But I think we may even be able to make him understand that.

Is there a way to do this without making it painfully apparent to him that he's being diluted to 10%?

OK, that's all for now. I'll send you the list of grants I need made in another email in a second. Sean can send you grants for his people when he stops coughing up his lungs.

Hope you guys both feel better, Mark”

adonese··on A Sad Day for Rust
Not to compare or anything. But I’m active at r/Golang and I find that the community is comparatively better there. I was shocked as to how would someone told anyone to never write a code again!

Maybe this because some members on Rust subreddit believes that they are more intellectual than others? It seems like a cultural thing, go people don’t bother to be seemed as smart or so and that’s possibly reduce the aggressive competition that naturally arise in places where intellect, high performance etc are very important metrics?

adonese··on Ask HN: How to deal with big existing code base when you are new to the team
This! My first job was a large Django app. It was very intimidating for me at first and the stakes were very high.

After the first successful build everything seemed very natural onwards. Reading the docs and trying to understand he whole system flow were much easier after that. Also, the version control history can give you more insights on the features and the decision being made.
