Is it just for pushing the sales of these newer models? Because you'd still have to use Google lens (though more tighter integration), but it's not intrinsic to a new hardware (gpu or cpu) at all.

I like how overly underwhelming this year apple and Samsung flagship products are. The 1 year release cadence seems to hit a point where no fundamental new changes were to be added.

>who have been priced out of the market for years now.

Looking in the market for a PC rig (used), and I'm wondering about the state of used GPUs. I recall the consensus years ago was used GPU are useless since they were being (over)used for crypto mining -- but I wonder if this argument a) is still valid now and b) shouldn't that substantially reduce the GPU costs?

is it any different or comparable to numba or pyjion? Not following python closely in recent years but I recount those two projects with huge potential

adonese··on How meta built the infrastructure for Threads
I don't what is it with porn on twitter, the blue check was supposed to stop them but they have gotten way worse than before.

I was never a good user for twitter, I don't engage that much except for just reading news and just follow some techie people and communities. But even for my light usage I can clearly see the downgrade of the service

adonese··on How meta built the infrastructure for Threads
It's actually okay-ish so far. The people and the news are still on twitter but with the bots (twitter) and Facebook support (infrastructure, integration with existing fb products and the leaner upselling) I can see that it does have a good product market fit

How effective is that really? The boycott to china policy. I mean, they can proxy the imports through other countries
adonese··on Show HN: Imgsrc – Generate Beautiful Open Graph Images
I'd love it if it has an api, and maybe with watermark and limitations (xx generated images per month) -- but I also understand that will severely limit the revenue for it

>Just be aware that it tends to hallucinate APIs.

It gives you nice little hints and a different perspective on your api design itself. I'd have a chat with chatgpt and sometimes I'd miss to share specific code and it just assumes or hallucinate on that.

adonese··on It's time to put REST to rest
Content negotiation is it just for taste or do you have some other reasons?

I find one good use case for them when a browser can make good use case with a SSE whilst another client just needs a regular _json_ response

Mobile vendors really need to fix this battery issue. Currently on S21 and the battery can barely make it to 5 hours.

If my financials got better, I'll definitely move to iPhone

adonese··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
noob ai here, but is it gonna be challenging because of something intrinsic to gpt4? or about collecting equivalent amount of data to train a comparable model. Because I see Facebook releasing their models down to the weights

Yes, absolutely fair tbh.

Bit of context: grew up in Sudan, with embargo and us sanction (also Cuba and Iran and lately Syria), there was not even a possibility to pay for these subscriptions, torrent and modded apps were the viable options (also economical factors).

Another benefits to that: while I was in Sudan, I didn't even have to use so many ad blocks, major ads providers (Google and fb) blocked Sudan and that was absolutely great!

I don't mind paying to services, but it should definitely factor in economical status per each country

adonese··on Google lays off employees working on its voice assistant
They're fully committed until they are not. That what sucks about Google and that culture of always buying a fancy domain name and building this new business about it. They were as ecstatic about their Siri alternative, and I wouldn't be surprised they would ditch bard again for whatever fancy new thing is.

It is okay for products to be lame and underwhelming, granted there are users and use cases for them

adonese··on Startup CTO's Handbook
I had a job offer recently and it's very obvious that the CEO does way too much CTO stuff than they should. It was my biggest red flag (against everyone's recommendations, since the job offer came with a very generous package)

Meeting minutes has been my go-to strategy in the past startups I worked at. We share them on notion, participants can edit / add, while it is also visible to other members to view. Just one notion page with subpage for different meetings.

I believe the idea for the meetings are mostly to plan for something or align the team due to changes in requirements or divergence in execution and as such they should rather discuss limited topic(s). That's why I feel meetings minutes are suffice to reach good consensus

adonese··on Go Package for Building Progressive Web Apps
Pro hype here, BUT add htmx to it and it's a match made in heaven. Rationale: templ is a template engine with the same syntax as go (so no need to learn or be worried about any new syntax). Htmx makes html more powerful

I cannot stress how github code search is helping me! Gotta be the best productivity tool recently
adonese··on On eating out alone
I have this weird thing where I don't eat at all alone. Eating is so social for me I'd rather not eat at all than eat by myself.

I have had terrible time to get over that with my current company, where everyone has different time slots for when they eat. I couldn't bear that and I will have to wait until I get back home so I can eat with my roommates.

adonese··on A fully open-source and end-to-end encrypted note taking alternative to Evernote
I use sublime text for that. It launches super fast, and after I capture whatever idea I have I usually copy the doc over to notion. Sometimes, all I need is to just capture whatever thought I have and not worry at all about copying them to notion or other tools (especially common when coding / debugging, I will just have an idea and then either excute on it or create a github issue)

adonese··on Saudi Arabia Just Beheaded 81 People in One Day
That if you trust Saudis official media.

In all cases, Saudi will have to share a report that dehumanizes the murdered ppl. You cannot just kill without citing reasons as to why. For the western media, they include words such as ALqaida and ISIS. Needless to say, they don't have to provide any rationale for their Saudis citizens, since they ultimately have the god power and the monarchy.

A friend of mine, went to Saudi for a job. He was let go just because he tweeted stuff that criticizes the Saudi government and their involvement in our country. And he was lucky he was detained!
