adl··on Firefox.html: Rebuilding Firefox UI in HTML
> from time to time check in on the state of desktop/app development and see if they've finally figured out html is better for interfaces than any interface builder

Is this for real? I can name numerous advantages of Web Apps have over desktop/native Apps, "Building better interfaces" is not one of them.

Trying to build a UI with CSS and DOM manipulation (not to mention <div> hacks, Bootstrap, Dojo/JQueryUI, different rendering engines, etc) is an exercise in pain compared to basically _any_ modern UI toolkit. (From XAML to Qt, Android, hell even GTK.)

edit: minor correction, I meant to say " build a UI" not "build a native UI"

adl··on RMS on why Emacs lisp doesn't have namespaces
Why does it bug you?
adl··on At Apple’s request, we removed the ability to “Send” files to other services
The fact that any rejection is 'valid' or that there is a process for rejections to begin with, is absurd. iOS is NOT developer friendly.

I wish iOS didn't have the market share it has, it is so depressing: you either are under Apple's boot or have to abstain from a large segment of the Mobile Market.

adl··on DIOS: Data Intensive Operating System
DIOS means God in spanish, and in all caps it almost always means the Christian God. I hope some people aren't turn off by the name.
adl··on Letter to Amazon Board from Fired Ad Exec
And according to the letter, she was even promoted.
adl··on Microsoft takes .NET open source and cross-platform
Sometimes is justified, never say never, but it will take short of a miracle for me to trust Internet Explorer in any way, shape or form after setting back the Open Web for years (I know that IE 11 is way better, but to little, to late)

Now saying that, I think that an Open Source .NET stack is a wonderful thing! I like C# a lot.

adl··on Osquery: Expose the operating system as a relational database
I believe they refer to the 'make package' support. It builds a .deb (for Ubuntu) or a .rpm (for CentOS). The code itself seems very Linux generic.
adl··on Osquery: Expose the operating system as a relational database
I build the .deb for Ubuntu 14.10 (downloaded the project, the Vagrant image, etc, the works. 1.1GB in total according to du -h)

It's here if anyone wants to try it: osquery-0.0.1-trusty.amd64.deb (11 MB)

adl··on Hands-on with the USB Type-C plug
I have. four years ago, I bought a bluetooth car adapter that you could clip in the driver's visor (can't remember the model, but it was not a popular one) from BestBuy that had the weird one Mini USB A in the first photo.

It was a PITA to charge it, and I lost the cable.

adl··on Microsoft Ending its Short-Lived Tenure as Android Phone Maker
It's all fun and games in your job/startup until Microsoft comes in and demands royalties for their patents (most of them obvious implementations).

But when it happens to HTC, Samsung, etc it's just: "why shouldn't they get a return from that investment?"

Microsoft (or any other company for the matter) demanding patent royalties after treating to sue a product they had no hand in producing, is wrong.

Earning more money form their patent extortion from a competitor's product than it's own implementation, it's just sad and pathetic.

adl··on Show HN: Pangoly – Build your shiny new PC
I'm genuinely curious, why is it your number one feature? I know that ECC provides error correction, but aside from server use, is it really that critical?
adl··on The Android Screen Fragmentation Myth
This! I feel your pain. I'm on the same boat, trying to support mobile HTML5 on Android.

To be fair, iOS has it's own issues with HTML5 development.

adl··on The Android Screen Fragmentation Myth
my main issue with Android fragmentation is trying to support HTML5 Apps with PhoneGap/Cordova and various JS toolkits (Sencha Touch, JQueryMobile, Dojo).

Each version(4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3) has a slightly different version of the default browser and WebViewUI component(and don't get me started on Samsung devices which have their own issues regarding the default browser) with it's own quirks and rendering issues.

They kinda fixed that in KitKat 4.4, using Chromium 30 as the basis of the WebViewUI component, but KitKat deployments in the wild are in the single digits.

adl··on The Decline and Fall of IBM
The company I work for (that shall remain unnamed) signed a thousand million dollars, 10 year contract with IBM for IT infrastructure.

I was in need to log into a Mac Pro that ended up in one of the Server Rooms that IBM took over in our building.

I basically needed to connect a keyboard, log in and enable remote desktop so I could run a few XCode builds (I don't have a Mac, and I needed to test a few hybrid Sencha/Phonegap apps)

after several phone calls involving my boss and his boss, three meetings with five IBMers and 3 months (I kid you not) we gave up, and ended up borrowing a few personal MacBooks from friends to test the apps.

The Server Room was a few meters from the conference room, it was a 2 minute job, but we could not enter and do the changes ourselves without IBMs permission.

The word frustration doesn't even cover it.

(oh, and the 'copy jar files' thing? totally true.)

adl··on Announcing Xamarin 3
Thanks for your quick reply Miguel, I do understand the difficulties of supporting the Linux ecosystem.

I hope that someday it becomes worthwhile for Xamarin to provide that support, in the meantime, another laptop or a VM will have to do. ;)

Xamarin 3.0 looks great, congratulations!

adl··on Announcing Xamarin 3
I know that the official comment regrading Linux support is that there are no plans to support it right now, I just want to say that there are people on Linux that are willing to pay for your product!

I'm developing cross platform mobile apps with HTML5 and I would jump at the chance of using Xamarin instead (I was a C# developer in another life).

I might just end up running it in a VM, but it would be great running Xamarin Studio on Linux.

Thanks :-)

adl··on Pre-orders start today for Flame, the Firefox OS developer phone
I went to a Movistar located in a nearby mall ('Galerias Mty' in Monterrey) during my lunch break. They had the Alcatel on display, along all the other cell phones.

Took me 30min to buy, mostly because of the activation.

adl··on Pre-orders start today for Flame, the Firefox OS developer phone
I bought a Alcatel with Firefox OS a month ago (Movistar here in Mexico) , I gave it to my father. He is very happy with it.
adl··on Mozilla Moving Forward
It doesn't solve this 'academic' double standard you speak of, but it does improve the lives of millions of people right now.

Baby steps, iterative process, etc, etc.

adl··on Mozilla Moving Forward
If you (not you Mikeb85, the hypothetical and general "You") are trying to remove the legal rights of a segment of the population, and basically trying to make them second class citizens, then don't be surprised if people are gonna want you not to have any power over a group of people (like being the CEO of a multi million business for example).

Doesn't matter if you are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Atheist or whatever, that is beside the point.

adl··on Mozilla Moving Forward
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Brendan was NOT 'incredibly' suited for the job.

Let me explain: I have no doubt that Brendan was an incredible CTO/is an excellent hacker/engineer.

But being CEO is not about that, it's about being a leader. Being a uniter and a communicator. a galvanizer to the corporation/community he was trying to lead.

Forget about his donation a few years ago. In the short time he was CEO, he had the opportunity to weather the storm (so to speak) he and Mozilla Corp found themselves in. But in fact, by avoiding the issue, he dug a even deeper hole.

His one interview about the issue to The Guardian was a complete mess PR wise: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/apr/01/mozilla-ce...

It was a mistake to appoint him as CEO. I'm sad that he left Mozilla, he could have continued to provide a lot of value to Mozilla and the Open Web in several capacities, But he was not "incredibly well-suited" for the job as Mozilla CEO, IMHO.

adl··on Firefox OS 2.0 starts emerging from its cocoon
I bought mine yesterday! It's not my daily driver, but I wanted to to test a few HTML5 Apps and to show my support to Mozilla and Firefox.

at 70 US dollars (950 mexican pesos) it was a steal.

My father needs a phone, (his 'feature' phone went dead a few weeks ago) and that little ZTE Open Firefox OS phone is a perfect replacement.

adl··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
Can the CEO of a corporation still function as CEO when he personally doesn't believe on his company policies?

Mozilla supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples, but his new CEO does not? I'm sorry, but it just does not compute.

adl··on OkCupid urges users to abandon Firefox
Baby steps, you have to start somewhere. (You know, the "First they came for the same sex marriage...", and all that).
