adg··on Freakonomics: Why California’s Tuition Hike Might Be a Good Thing
The article only talks about how tuition hikes affect the very poor and the very rich. But what about the middle class?

If the distribution of parental household income is normal, then wouldn't hikes significantly hurt a large portion of college students; i.e. the ones who aren't receiving aid and whose parents aren't rich?

adg··on Freakonomics: Why California’s Tuition Hike Might Be a Good Thing
The author is quoting from an article he wrote in 2003.

I doubt anyone will have trouble finding it, but A History of Western Philosophy is actually by Bertrand Russell.
adg··on Ask HN: What music alters your state of consciousness?
I really like stuff without lyrics that's fairly repetitive. Some examples: http://www.songite.com/#c1f21f.
adg··on Hey Ubuntu, Stop Making Linux Look Bad
Do you have any specific examples? I've been bumping up against this wall a bit lately and have never tried Debian.
adg··on Why Idling Mind is Mother of Invention
What exactly is 'day dreaming'? The author seems to make up his own definition for it, interpreting it to include activities such as reading Wikipedia and watching YouTube videos. Personally, I find many of the tasks he mentioned too interactive to allow my mind to wander while doing them. (I'm actually trying to learn something when I read a Wikipedia article.) I think I'll stick to three-hour walks.

Some people claim learning Dvorak will actually slow down your typing speed on a QWERTY keyboard. Since typing is mostly done with muscle memory, knowing two layouts creates a bit of conflict when your brain tries to decide which finger to use to type a letter.

That said, you only run into that problem if you're forced to switch between a QWERTY and Dvorak layout often.

adg··on What I.Q. doesn't tell you about race
You have to realize who Gladwell's audience is. I think you're severely underestimating the number of people who have done any research into IQ studies. Now, you could argue that he is not rigorous enough in his arguments, and while this is true, he's still exposing many people to new ideas that can help to reduce widespread misconceptions that the general public holds.
adg··on Working hard is overrated
Gladwell popularized the "10,000 hours rule", but he didn't invent it. It's originally from a paper by K. Anders Ericsson on "deliberate practice" [1]. It cites a ton of other research in the area and is definitely worth reading if you liked Outliers.

I believe the proper name for it is, in fact, the "awesome bar".

adg··on Gmail goes offline with Google Gears
I wonder why Google isn't offering a DOM Storage implementation of this. Versions of Firefox 2 and later offer built-in support for WHATWG's DOM Storage API, which would (theoretically) allow users to have this functionality without installing the Gears extension.

My best guess is that Gears is more robust and probably easier to implement things with than DOM Storage, but I'd appreciate if anyone with experience using both could confirm this.
