adeptus··on A Microscope on Microservices
That CPU flame graph is pretty cool. Haven't seen it displayed like that before. Shows process path/name contribution to volume of CPU spike, all in 1 graph. Neato.
adeptus··on Cosmic radio burst finally seen in real time
Aliens = "some sort of being", or if you prefer, all-powerful beings that can appear/disappear at will, travel 1/2 the universe in the blink of an eye, paralyze you at will, erase your memory, time travel, defy gravity etc.... many non-scientists might call that a deity. I call them technologically advanced aliens.
adeptus··on Cosmic radio burst finally seen in real time
1) If pulse = message, then proves intelligent life elsewhere

2) If elsewhere = several thousand to million+ years closer to the bigbang than Earth, then implies civilization is aprox that much older/more advanced than us.

3) If we went from horse and buggy to travelling at 20,000 km/h in space in the course of 3 centuries, to say nothing of discovering Newtonian theory all the way to quantum mechanics, then it is plausible they have even far more advanced theories (of everything?), if they are a mere few hundred years more advanced than us, nevermind if they are 10,000 or 1 million+ more years more advanced.

4) Anything after 500 years would look like magic to us. It is thus not impossible (though yes it is impossible by our incomplete quantum theories today), that they have managed to not only figure out how to travel across however many hundreds or thousands of light-years to us, but also that they've managed to figure out time-travel, whether physically or "read-only", only.

5) Once "4)" is a reality, at least half the thousands of UFOlogy "crazy" reports becomes plausible if not some variant of truth/reality (i.e. ancient aliens, space craft that appear out of nowhere, craft that can travel 10,000 miles/hour then do a 90 degree right turn, human abductions for genetic experiments/ ongoing species hybridization, etc ).

In other words, humanity may have been created/started by intelligent design (or not - perhaps we really did start from monkeys) and then continued on its own via Darwinian evolution and/or accelerated along the way by our alien overlords. In either case, intelligent design (or "alteration" if only half way through) thus becomes possible

As the saying goes: "If you're one step ahead, you're a genius! If you're two steps ahead, you're insane!"

adeptus··on HTML6 Concept
Who the heck wants to type <html: before every single command? Waste of programmer's time, hard drive storage and bandwidth.
adeptus··on In France, New Review of 35-Hour Workweek
So what's preventing management from imposing huge amounts of workload when there's no limit to how many hours you work? The usefulness of a set limit of hours is that it protects the employee from work overload.
adeptus··on Ten seconds of math
Was not disappointed. Was half expecting a 3 page long article about some epiphany over 10 seconds of math contemplation.
adeptus··on Bitcoin Sidechains
I don't understand how sidechains will be economically feasible given there is no monetary incentive for anyone to work on a sidechain, as opposed to an alt-coin, where speculators "invest" in X new currency and early adopters (aka. developers) benefit.
adeptus··on The day UFOs stopped play
I some what agree on that. I don't subscribe to Mr. Greer's overly optimistic perspectives on aliens, to say nothing of his meditation group meetings and incessant and obnoxious name dropping in nearly all his speeches. Still, the guy has managed to steer UFOlogy to some level of public credibility.

Gotta learn how to not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

adeptus··on The day UFOs stopped play
I stopped reading at .."To lobby for disclosure implies that there is something to disclose, which is highly dubious."... just like how it was highly dubious that the NSA wasn't spying on everyone, right? come on. This thing, if it's real is 100 times BIGGER than any previous government scandal - all the more reason to not disclose it (yes I know, circular argument). But the proper counter arguement is to watch the 2001 Disclosure video - in there you have dozens of Ex-military, NASA and US government employees (many of them high ranking) ready and willing to testify before congress on the matter.

Think about it, admitting aliens exist and are visiting us means:

1) They likely know how to travel across entire galaxies in their life-times (likely hours/days)

2) They have invisibility technology: UFOs are often reported to appear out of thin air and disappear back into thin air.

3) Their propulsion technologies completely baffle us. Tens of thousands of UFO witnesses (including many hundreds confirmed on radar) have reported to have travelled thousands of miles per second, to then stop on a dime or do 90 degree turns and carry on as if gravity could be ignored.

4) If even a single abduction story is real, they have the ability to paralyze any human being and teleport them through walls and ceilings. They also have the ability to find any single human anywhere on Earth as many self-confessed abductees have reported they tried to move across the country, yet the aliens always found them and just continued abducting them. It also begs to question their agenda and morality - WTF are they doing with humans they abduct?

5) If any of the military UFO stories are real, they can out maneuver every single fighter jet humanity has ever created - exactly zero UFOs have been shot down by military planes, despite hundreds of chases having been documented by pilots and radar operators. Roswell UFO crash is rumored to have been taken down by experimental military radar tests, not intentional military weapons.

6) Consider for a moment aliens are real and they are thousands of years more technologically advanced than us. What can we do about it? Nothing - we can do exactly nothing. Our "powerful" government leaders and best militaries would be exactly powerless to do anything. It would be full-on wide-spread global panic.

My personal theory is that given how vast the Universe is, it is entirely possible that some (millions?) planets were formed before Earth and at least many dozens/hundreds/thousands (?) evolved life to the point of human intelligence or greater, THOUSANDS of years before humans ever walked our Earth. This would translate to there being X number of alien civilizations out there far more advanced than humans technologically and more than likely biologically advanced (think brain power x 100+).

Consider how we've gone from horse and carriage to putting a man on the moon and creating space crafts that can travel 20,000 km/hour (in space) in a mere 300 years. Now imagine the capabilities (if you can) of what an alien species only 10,000 years more advanced than us might have. What about 100,000 years? 1 Million ? Their technology would be like magic to us - completely unimaginable ... you know like travelling across entire galaxies in mere hours, teleporting through walls, having invisible craft, shooting paralyzing beams, erasing memories of (some) human abductees etc.

Why is it so hard to imagine and believe that other intelligent civilizations on other planets exist and that they might be thousands if not millions of years ahead of us?

News Media logic process on UFO stories:

1) Let's find the most obscure explanation for X UFO sighting that may or may not be true (aka. large spider webs that fly up to 14,000 feet in the air) while ignoring the other 100,000 + sightings per year around the world.

2) Let's post a story about a UFO and people who witnessed it, then let's close it off with witty remarks and laugh it off... because the potential for real aliens visiting our Earth is way the F* too scary to contemplate.

adeptus··on Setback: A $58,000 lesson in mid-volume manufacturing
Looks like a good article, I read about 1/2 of it and skimmed the rest. Would have been better if in the opening couple of paragraphs you actually explained wtf a "microview" is. Cheers.
adeptus··on Now Accepting Bitcoin on Dell.com
Maybe if you turn this chart sideways it will look flat, otherwise... up, up and away!

adeptus··on Why is Docker the new craze in virtualization and cloud computing?
It's not ridiculous at all, given production deployments need segmentation to maximize security. Docket may be fine for Dev environments with no real customer data being used, but to deploy to production if you use Docker, you will get shot... by the security guys.
adeptus··on Ask HN: Urgent connection to Twitter support
Possible Work around?.... Create second twitter account, and announce it from the first twitter account periodically. Make new announcements on second twitter account.
adeptus··on Brazil, Europe plan undersea cable to skirt U.S. spying
It would actually be interesting if this could be true. Encryption at the transport level (POS, SONet, ATM, VPLS, etc), such that all higher layer traffic whether further encrypted at the application layer or not is automatically secure between two trans-oceanic points. As far as I know, this technology doesn't commercially exist today, but theoretically it could be invented.
adeptus··on Leaving Google
"[I] haven’t seen a new technology in a while that struck me as a real life-changer-at-scale"

C'mon dude... Dogecoin!

adeptus··on IRC Networks Under Systematic Attack From Governments
Why the F* don't we have popular encrypted IRC systems yet? This should/could have existed as of 10 years ago..at least. This is a serious question.
adeptus··on Why the Web Won't Be Nirvana (1995)
"1995 EPIC FAIL Internet predictions"... would be more appropriate.

Now is a good time to start collecting such web pages from bitcoin naysayers. ;-) ;-) ;-)

adeptus··on Bitcoin is a Market for Lemons
"In all three cases, note that the economic activity involves something that is either outright illegal or in a legal gray area"

I stopped reading right there. This is nothing more than just another article by somebody who doesn't understand bitcoin and couldn't be bothered to do even basic research. There's over 20,000 LEGAL retail merchants already accepting bitcoin, and this is just the beginning.

TL;DR: Troll article, author doesn't have a clue about bitcoin.

adeptus··on Bitcoin Black Friday: Why Namecheap is Participating
Somebody is forgetting about exchange/purchase fees associated with acquiring bitcoins in the first place (assuming you don't mine them - most people don't). It isn't free to just buy more bitcoins. However it is free to just buy domain names with USD - at least from a consumer perspective.
adeptus··on My deadly disease was just a 23andme bug
I'd love to use a service like 23andme, but am seriously concerned about privacy issues. Do they have any privacy conscious competitors? Any upcoming ones?
adeptus··on Europe approves use of in-flight electronics during take-off and landing
I've always wondered why they had this rule in the first place. Each wireless device by FCC rules (or equivalent dept in each country) must operate withing a designated RF frequency range.

One would think that pilots would use a frequency range that would be in the private (not public like Wifi 2.4/5.x Gh) range and thus never be overlapped.

What am I missing?

adeptus··on Why is it important to have a shorter résumé?
On the flip side, nothing ticks me off more than large companies who think they are so desirable (they're not!) that they think they can get away with making you fill out pages of propriatary website application forms and upload your resume into blocks of text that never format properly. When I see that... It immediately turns me off and I walk away. Not interested in conforming to BS.It speaks volumes of how you run your company and intend to treat your employees.
adeptus··on "Careless" employees
So basically you want to implement Enterprise QA processes for a tiny team so as to make up for incompetence and bad hiring decisions. Sorry, I don't buy it.
adeptus··on Announcing The Dark Mail Alliance – Founded by Silent Circle and Lavabit
I suggest names that don't have limited country/cultural references if the intent is to make this a global success. Some other suggestions:

-SecMail (Secure Email)

-PrivMail (private/privacy email)

-FMail (freedom email)

-NetMail (New Internet standard email)

And thank you for taking this on, it is seriously needed. And please, no reliance on CA certs, chances are the NSA has compromised at least some of those.

adeptus··on The Zuckerberg Files - All public utterances of Mark Zuckerberg
So I go to the website, and I can't see any "files"... Oh I have to login? Pff, whatever. Don't waste my time. Bye.
adeptus··on Are We Too Close to Making Gattaca a Reality?
One of the problems is that it will create an environment where individuals are strongly encouraged and pressured into pursuing a particular type of career or avoid XYZ other activities. Reminds me of the stereotypical asian parent forcing their children to become lawyers or doctors, when the individual would much rather pursue sports, arts or something else entirely. One of the most critical aspects of success is motivation and desire to accomplish X. When everyone around you is saying you should do Y because of your genetic makeup it could lead to a lot more dissatisfied human beings.
adeptus··on NSA monitored calls of 35 world leaders
On the "is not monitoring and will not monitor"... If they took the time to deny present and future monitoring, the obvious question then becomes why haven't they denied past/recent past monitoring? Oh that's right, because they can't in fact deny it as they WERE monitoring.
adeptus··on Startup School 2013 Doodles
Everyone is praising you on the look/feel of your website, which I agree is pretty cool; however, the content of what "people" learned from the conference seems all but completely useless (unless the conference sucked that much that all you got out of each speaker was a couple of 1 liner's??). Not sure if you were serious about the content or just messing around to demo your website.
