addedlovely··on Deepmind’s AlphaCode conquers coding, performing as well as humans
What happens in a future where AI, that is trained on human generated datasets, becomes so prevalent that the humans that created the training data no longer have the original skillset required to create said dataset.

Are we going to end up with AI training on AI generated datasets.

addedlovely··on How the U.K. Became One of the Poorest Countries in Western Europe
Seems more interesting that automation via robotics is initially driven by car manufacturing [0], of which Germany and France produce substantially more units [1]

That said the UK government should really get a grip and have a coherent long term strategy instead of fire fighting the next media storm from week to week. Automation will need to increase given an ageing population, people exiting the workforce ( willingly or through care or health reasons ) and closing the door to immigration via Brexit.

addedlovely··on We increased our Lighthouse score by making our images larger
Clicking one marker on the map triggers almost 100 network requests. Seems crazy, why push all the images for all properties when I only need the first, then lazyload the rest when I interact with the slideshow.

Not sure why sorting then reloads the data, as it looks to sort the matched results that are already on page.

addedlovely··on Adobe Photoshop ships on Macs with Apple Silicon
Thanks, will check it out. Reads like it'll handle opening InDesign, Illustrator and PSD's - assume that's workable and doesn't have too many gotchas?

I get a variety of artwork from designers in a plethora of formats and sadly can't enforce my preferences on them.

addedlovely··on Adobe Photoshop ships on Macs with Apple Silicon
Sure it won't take long for them to add more bloat and slow it down.

Wish I could cancel my creative cloud subscription but there is still prevalent use. Sketch and Figma do a much nicer job of things. Seems Adobe end up copying some of their features but always buried a few more clicks deep.

addedlovely··on 1MB Club
May seem pedantic but those little gains do add up. A missing favicon also has a surprising impact.
addedlovely··on Getting Postmark’s Lighthouse Performance Score to 100
Thanks for your work, lighthouse is great!

Helps push general performance and best practise forward. And its communicated in a way non techie's understand.

Almost too easily - have had some 'consultants' run 'reports' that are just lighthouse re-badged, coupled with no technical understanding of what the action points mean, or why they may not be suitable for the platform / workflow in use.

But for the most part it's a positive tool, thanks!

addedlovely··on Stripe raises $600M at nearly $36B valuation
Yes based on incoming revenue from payments, Stripe Capital: https://stripe.com/capital
addedlovely··on An alternative to using Google Analytics on your website
Looks nice. Is the account multiuser with separation between sites? If it is, it's a service I'd consider throwing into my maintenance packages as an added value. Most clients don't need the complexity of Google Analytics and with GDPR the data is increasingly out of line with reality, given we load GA based on consent.
addedlovely··on Google plans to move UK users' accounts outside EU jurisdiction
Not sure why you are being down voted for this - we ratified GDPR under UK law, the UK Data Protection act of 2018 - until that law is repealed GPDR still applies under my understanding.
addedlovely··on Police hijack a botnet and remotely kill 850k malware infections
Is an interesting line to cross - that a company you have no relationship with can make changes to your machine - admittedly in the name of good.

Imagine that flaw they found turned out to have been a trap and they bricked 850k devices.

addedlovely··on Facebook won’t let you opt out of its phone number ‘look up’ setting
Sadly I'm getting prompted to enter my phone number to login - can't login to delete the account now.
addedlovely··on Why I Write CSS in JavaScript
Yeah or pseudo elements / hover / focus etc?
addedlovely··on Companies use smartphone locations to help advertisers and even hedge funds
Agree, that's some lovely parallax that normally stutters for me on other sites / implementations.
addedlovely··on End-to-end encryption does not prevent Facebook from accessing WhatsApp chats
Messages may be sent encrypted, but I bet they are analysed before being encrypted. Without an external independent audit I'm not sure I'd trust Zuck.
addedlovely··on What does WhatsApp’s upcoming monetisation mean for the company and its users?
Facebook killed their core platform by watering down the communication between my friends and family with business adverts and pages.

I suspect they will kill WhatsApp the same way.

addedlovely··on UK government's battle with Apple over EU citizens app
Agency: 'Oh yeah that feature is not supported, but don't worry there are rumours it's coming'

Government: 'Great let's base our whole system on this'

addedlovely··on iPad Pro
Horizontal scrolling...you try it once because you think it might be cool - then you realise somethings are an archetype that shouldn't be played with, like vertical scrolling websites.
addedlovely··on Show HN: CSS Grid Playground in Webflow
Got any smart fallbacks for IE?
addedlovely··on Show HN: Make a business model canvas in your browser
Nice use of CSS grid! Noticed special characters seem to break the site. e.g. …
addedlovely··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
Too late, just got a refurbished 2015 model instead. Looks like a step in the right direction, but quite how Apple justify those prices for the hard drive upgrades is beyond me!
addedlovely··on Popular Mac Developer Slams Apple for 'Sad State of Macintosh Hardware'
Recently got my Mac Book Pro nicked by a kid on a moped - mid meeting.

Sadly am not impressed with the touch bar, lack of USB, keyboard failures and the hardware is definitely due an update - or a price drop. There's only so long I'll hold out and wait for an update.

Am currently thinking of getting an iMac - then a chrome book for meetings (so when it get's stolen again it's not too brutal). Anyone else got other recommendations?

Assume windows isn't the blue screen mess I remember of days gone past.

addedlovely··on Japanese Vending Machines at Night Juxtaposed with a Wintry Hokkaido Landscape
I remember also getting vended fries, but hot and cold drinks alone blew my mind coming from the U.K.
addedlovely··on Teachable Machine: Teach a machine using your camera, live in the browser
Good to know, but thankfully easy to remove permissions from the settings.
addedlovely··on Show HN: The Million Dollar Homepage as an Ethereum Smart Contract and DApp
Do this mean that typo is not editable as it's in the blockchain?
addedlovely··on Jacquard by Google transforms clothing
"The Jacket is designed to withstand up to 10 washes with the Jacquard snap tag removed but your experience may vary by usage and wash conditions"

"Note: You can wear the Jacket in the rain, but if the Jacket becomes too wet it may not reliably detect gestures. Allow the Jacket to dry and resume using. The snap tag is resistant to rain and splashing, but it is not fully waterproof"

Sure it's really "Specifically tailored with the urban cyclist in mind"...that's one wet, smelly, denim jacket after a few rides in the UK.

addedlovely··on Equifax linked customers to my fake phishing version of their site by accident
Any other Uk visitors see this on https://trustedidpremier.com/ - thought a few thousand UK accounts were tied up in this...
