adamzegelin··on Is Fry’s Electronics in trouble?
Just got home from a visit to my local Frys (East San Jose) (tonight, around 7pm). My wife and I were probably 2 of 10 customers total, if that.

So many empty shelves. Every isle was capped with stacks of boxed paper reams.

Apple section had one MacMini and a broken Macbook. Car audio section was basically an empty shell, with only a few demo stereos and speakers left. The home theater section was an empty room. Toy section was empty.

The place is dead.

Care to link to this list. Just want to check that my board isn't on said list!

adamzegelin··on Chinese Window Lattice and CSS
Impressive.

What I see is that CSS is slowly becoming more and more of a programming/Turing complete and/or graphics language, rather than simply just stylesheets.

adamzegelin··on Show HN: My CV is also a bootloader
Seeing the comments about incompatibility above, I wonder if docx would be a better format for such a "polyglot format CV". AFAIK docx is a ZIP, and in a ZIP file the header/directory is located at the end of the file, so technically the beginning of the file can be "garbage".

(Not tested)

Edit: rereading, I also did not mean to imply the boot loader = garbage :) More that bytes that comprise a boot loader would look like garbage to the ZIP format.

What happend to using native platform controls?

All these toolkits look out of place on any platform.

adamzegelin··on Using Java 9 Modularization to Ship Zero-Dependency Apps
Dunno if I'd call Java native. This is more like zero-dependecy Java apps — aka, you don't need to pre-install the JVM (and its "optional" adware on Windows).

adamzegelin··on Linux Inside – How the Linux Kernel Works
Is there any documentation that talks about x86_64 and the modern UEFI boot process? This guide still talks about BIOSs, MBRs, real mode, 16-bit registers, etc.
adamzegelin··on Lost Joys of the Screen Saver
Aerial [1] for macOS is nice and quite relaxing. It plays the fly-over/aerial screensaver videos from the Apple TV.

Note that it does download a whole bunch of HD videos -- don't start this on mobile broadband!

MusicBrainz is powered by Postgres. You can download a snapshot of their database here: https://musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Database

It's a few gigabytes of data, compressed.

adamzegelin··on Ask HN: Why don't more web projects start with a JVM stack?
As of JDK 7 OpenJDK and Oracle JDK can be considered equal.

The OracleJDK is built on top of OpenJDK. The only differences, according to a quick google, are some additional tooling, higher quality Java2D rendering and a different licence.

There is no difference in GC algorithms, hotspot optimisations, etc.

Tl;dr use OpenJDK

> There’s also some very preliminary support for HID over IIC, for systems that attach keyboards and touchpads over an I2C bus.

Keyboards & trackpads over I2C? I liked the trend of moving everything to USB, even for internal devices.

adamzegelin··on Ask HN: What hypervisor are you using?
I disagree. KVM has the best and most flexible passthough support that I've used.

Successfully running Windows 10 on top of Arch, with my GTX 970 passed though. Works without a hitch.

adamzegelin··on Postgres features and tips
Why is everyone pushing CTE's for "readability" for Postgres queries? I've seen this come up multiple times in the past few months.

CTE's (WITH clauses) are optimisation barriers — the query planner in Postgres won't inline CTEs, but instead will materialise their result into a temporary table first, preventing qual (WHERE clause) push-down and other optimisations.

I know this because it bit me, hard — I went nuts and wrote a lot of the queries in a new system to use WITH clauses, for readability. Performance was atrocious, and required refactoring to inline all the WITH clauses as sub-SELECTS.

CTE's are useful, but should not be used to improve readability.

The PostgreSQL documentation. http://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.3/static/index.html

The introduction tutorial is concise but more than sufficient.

The reference guide is well written, laid-out and covers everything you need: the database server, its configuration and tools, the SQL language, its operators, data types and grammar, the built-in procedural languages, the low-level client library, and all the database internals (system tables, data file formats, network protocol, query optimiser, indexes, etc).

adamzegelin··on DoS exploit crashes iOS/OSX devices using WebKit
Unfortunately, it's a bug in CoreText, not WebKit. Either way, both frameworks are at the OS level.

Safari uses the OS-provided WebKit framework. An App Store update of Safari would only be able to change application-level features, not WebKit bugs.

adamzegelin··on DoS exploit crashes iOS/OSX devices using WebKit
This isn't a bug inside WebKit. It's a bug inside Apples CoreText font rendering framework.

A `curl https://zhovner.com/tmp/killwebkit.html` in iTerm2 crashes as well.

adamzegelin··on Bootstrap 3 released
Which browser? Works fine for me in Safari 6 at any zoom level.
adamzegelin··on Effeckt.css
Blurry for me to. Safari 6.0.5, Mac.

It's the combination of -webkit-transform and -webkit-backface-visibility that causes the blurriness. Wild guess: those attributes turn on 3D acceleration, and rendering is incorrectly offset by .5 pixels.

adamzegelin··on Personal File Backup Server

    urlopen(self.url+"/list/"+self.username+"/"+self.password)
>.<

What?

Basically you need to run this over SSH or SSL to obtain any kind of security. Dropbox has security out of the box.

Dropbox also has: A GUI, a website UI, conflict resolution, support for folders, local sync. The list goes on.

As others say, this is very, very, very immature and incomplete.

I'd rather use Dropbox. Or `rsync`.

adamzegelin··on Fancy Input - CSS3 text typing effects for input fields
Please do not use this.

The whole page flashes and flickers for me on Safari 6.0.2 on Mac OS X 10.8.2.

Input of extended characters also doesn't work. Option-[aeiou] doesn't enter any characters. Holding [aeiou] prints the base character but fails to update once a modifier is selected.

The antialising algorithm alternates between subpixel and greyscale, causing flickering changes to the boldness of the text.

All in all, very very broken.
