adamkittelson··on Show HN: We put an iPhone on the front wheel of a car
Oddly enough I had no problems with Descent / Descent II, but Doom and Doom II wrecked me. I think it may have been because Doom's camera bobbed as you moved to simulate taking steps but Descent's camera was smooth when you moved forward.
adamkittelson··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
I'd personally find this more useful if I could start with what I'm paying for rent and get a result of "If you can buy a similar home for less than $xxx, xxx then buying is better."
adamkittelson··on 37 percent of adults cannot swim the length of a 25-yard pool
I lived in Minnesota until age 30 and your assertion about water temperature is flat out wrong. Summers in Minnesota are much hotter than in say, San Francisco, and the water in the lakes is very comfortable for swimming.
adamkittelson··on The fallen heroes of virtual reality (2014)
Conversely I could play Descent all day long and feel fine, but Doom would make me feel motion sick after a few hours.
adamkittelson··on Consumer Reports Calls Tesla Model S The Best Car Of 2014
FWIW Tesla doesn't use model years. Technically the model year is encoded in the VIN but it flips over at the start of the calendar year and isn't associated with any particular changes to the vehicle. Tesla has been adding features as soon as they're ready since launch. (e.g. parking sensors, power folding mirrors, upgraded seats etc)
adamkittelson··on Consumer Reports Calls Tesla Model S The Best Car Of 2014
The Gen3 vehicle is supposed to be ~30-40k.
adamkittelson··on Show HN: Google Music for Mac
They could really use a Sonos integration as well.
adamkittelson··on Making ActiveRecord 2x faster
Isn't the find_by_XXX style (soon to be?) deprecated?
adamkittelson··on Swiss police: Screen in Tesla cars is too large
I believe music information can also be displayed on the screen right behind the wheel (where the speedometer etc is) and controlled by physical buttons on the steering wheel rather than the touch screen. Ditto for several other common operations.
adamkittelson··on Musk: Tesla will have a factory in China
It's worth noting that despite the price increase compared to what Tesla charges in the United States they will, according to Tesla, actually be charging significantly less than other car manufacturers are charging for comparable vehicles in China.

adamkittelson··on T-Mobile CEO: “This industry blows,” biggest carriers offer “horseshit”
I'd be on T-Mobile in a heartbeat if they had, like, any coverage.
adamkittelson··on Introducing Rubinius X
This post really needed to follow up on the whole "Ruby is dying" part with some sort of "and here's how Rubinius X can help" part.

The way it's written has caused everyone here to debate whether or not Ruby is dying and completely ignore the announcement. I'm sure the title of the HN link isn't helping either.

adamkittelson··on RedScript – like CoffeeScript, in Ruby
Oddly enough that was done years ago via Silverlight of all things. http://www.rubyinside.com/ironruby-silverlight-ruby-in-brows...
adamkittelson··on Tesla Model X
That's awesome news, thanks! I've been considering getting a Tesla in 2015 when I've paid off my Volt, but I live in Wisconsin so the rear wheel drive was a deal breaker on the Model S. I like the Model S more than the Model X though so if it has an all wheel drive option that's probably the way I'll go. (Assuming the fabled more reasonably priced 3rd model hasn't been revealed and won me over by then).
adamkittelson··on Tesla Model X
Apologies if I'm missing something obvious, but is there anything new here regarding the Model X (e.g. pricing) or is this just an FYI for people who may not have been aware that it was a thing? At a glance I'm not seeing anything that looks to have changed recently on this page.
adamkittelson··on A Year and a Half With a Nissan Leaf (Part 2): The Summer Drive
I don't own a Leaf, but I do own a Volt. Assuming rate of charging is comparable I'd say you'd be taking a risk if you only have a wall plug at your destination. I'd be a lot more comfortable if you had access to a 240v charging station for that 3-4 hour span.

Also I've run into more than a few wall plugs that weren't up to snuff according to my charging adapter so there's some risk there too.

I wouldn't recommend buying a Leaf for your situation unless you were able to rent / borrow one and do your commute with it for at least a few days (preferably in unfavorable temperatures if your climate has them) to be sure it'll work out.

adamkittelson··on Valve releasing Dota2 for Linux
The gameplay is very similar. League of Legends is heavily based on the original Dota but with different characters and slightly different mechanics where Dota 2 is a port of Dota 1 from a Warcraft III map to a standalone game.

I personally prefer Dota 2 but it's largely subjective.

The biggest difference is probably in business models. While both games use micro-transactions Dota 2 only sells cosmetic items, League of Legends requires you to buy (either via $ or points earned in game) access to champions/heroes.

adamkittelson··on Nginx now supports Websockets
Something like varnish or haproxy. In my setup I had varnish proxying "/websocket" directly to my app server, and everything else to nginx.
adamkittelson··on WebSocket proxy support added to nginx trunk
Right on!

I'm using nginx and thin, but I'm currently having to use varnish for proxying my websocket connections to thin because nginx can't do it. Then I have to use stunnel for ssl termination because varnish doesn't support it. I'll be able to cut both of those pieces of software out now.

adamkittelson··on Why critics of Rails have it all wrong (and Ruby's bright multicore future)
That sounds cool too, have a demo up anywhere? I'm kinda doing a deploy as I code thing, I've added the url to my profile.
adamkittelson··on Why critics of Rails have it all wrong (and Ruby's bright multicore future)
As far as using websockets with Rails goes, I just wanted to mention that I've been having a really good experience using the websocket-rails gem (https://github.com/DanKnox/websocket-rails) in a text game (MUD) I'm working on as a Rails 3 app.
adamkittelson··on ~/.osx — a collection of sensible defaults for OS X Lion
Is there a way to avoid creating .DS_Store files on specific local volumes?

I used to have my Dropbox folder on my secondary (NTFS formatted) harddrive so I could use a symlink to share my Dropbox folder across OSX and my Windows 7 Bootcamp install instead of having duplicate Dropbox folders for each OS. It ended up spewing .DS_Store files all over my employer's company dropbox folders.

adamkittelson··on Android beats Iphone at web browsing
A longstanding quirk of the Android browser is that it can't handle elements that use overflow: auto to create a separate scrollable area. iOS devices handle this by two finger scrolling within these elements.

There is a two year old bug report noting that you cannot browse the android developer site on an android device as a result of this.

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2118

Until this is resolved I'd have a hard time accepting that android beats iPhone at web browsing.

adamkittelson··on Match.com Acquires Online Dating Site OkCupid
Thanks, prior to today I had only been to that page once so I hadn't noticed the randomization.
adamkittelson··on Match.com Acquires Online Dating Site OkCupid
In their dating persona test (http://www.okcupid.com/the-dating-persona-test) there is the line "If you have any STDs please go HERE." wherein HERE was a link to match.com. It now goes to mingle2.com.
adamkittelson··on Microsoft exec says Zune software coming to the Mac
I'm one of the three, so this is good news for me.

Honestly if the port is good then it's good news for Mac users in general, the Zune software is, in my opinion, a better music player than iTunes, independent of whether or not one owns a Zune device.

I'm also a fan of the subscription service.

adamkittelson··on Ask HN: Best Developer Linux Laptop?
I can recommend System76 if you go the Ubuntu route. My desktop at home is a System76 Leopard Extreme that I dual boot Ubuntu / Windows, and prior to getting my MBP I was using a Pangolin Performance laptop.

Since getting a MBP I can say that I do prefer OSX to Ubuntu, but I'm a Ruby/Rails dev surrounded by other Apple guys using Textmate so it's the path of least resistance for me for sure.
