adamdusty··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Everything is subject to supply and demand. Why would those four things not be? Even if the money was coming from the government they would all still be subject to supply and demand. Even if money didn't exist those things would all be subject to supply and demand. What exactly do you propose to change that?
adamdusty··on How I regained concentration and focus
Unless you as an individual are somehow more equipped to deal with emergencies than camp staff, I'm not sure being reachable would make any difference. I would hope in a real emergency, the first call would be to the appropriate emergency service regardless.
adamdusty··on End of the Machinery Game Engine
Well it used to be a game engine. It was on people's radar because the devs had previous success with a different game engine and they wrote fairly technical dev blogs about the process.
adamdusty··on It’s time to make that indie C# game in Godot
I think gp is saying that since it switch from mono to core before you will be able to finish a game, you might have a bad time when they switch implementations.
adamdusty··on Thoughts on the potato diet
There has to be some embellishing of the numbers. It's highly improbable that at 322 pounds someone could eat 1000 calories per day (his claim) and be at a 2800 calorie deficit with zero exercise.

I'm not saying it's not true, but I'm skeptical of the numbers.

adamdusty··on Ultra-flat timepiece, the RM UP-01 Ferrari, is 1.75 millimetres thick watch
I think it looks pretty cool, and I agree with gp that it's sad people are so caught up in some weird hatred for watch enthusiasts that they can't appreciate the engineering.
adamdusty··on New Arizona law makes it illegal to film within 8 feet of police
Yes you could film in both of those situations. The law specifically lists law enforcement activities as making an arrest, questioning suspects, and dealing with emotional situations (edit: specifically emotional or disturbed person exhibiting abnormal activity).

Also, if you are part of the law enforcement activity, you are allowed to film. So yes, if a cop walks up to you yelling and you are at least 8ft from the law enforcement activity, you are legally allowed to film.

adamdusty··on Rust 1.62.0
I learned c++ and rust around the same time. Even though c++ was more difficult in every single aspect, I have used it over rust in every project since. Everything about rust was great. Pattern matching, enums, result types; I could go on forever, but I just can't get in "the zone" when I develop stuff in rust. I think the mental overhead is just too much for my brain to process. So I'm right there with you, rust is too smart for me.
adamdusty··on Ask HN: Can you both take climate change seriously and against nuclear energy?
I suspect at least a few people displaced by Chernobyl or Fukushima hold the position of anti-nuclear and acknowledge climate change.

I would argue yes, you can rationally arrive at that stance.

adamdusty··on Open Food Facts – a food products database made by everyone, for everyone
Nutritionix is your best bet, in my opinion.

adamdusty··on Life is not short
It is whatever you perceive it to be. Family life is not like that for everyone, and money is definitely not the only reason.
adamdusty··on Making Code Faster
I work in III/V semiconductors. The product development goes like: identify need, design, attempt a proof of concept, DoEs to determine manufacturing costs/viability, repeat until you have a statistically controlled viable process. There is essentially no room for technical creativity like there is in software. If we spent an extra year on our worst performing product (we've done this), we would get at best 5% improvement with iffy reproducibility.

I dont know about construction or batteries.

adamdusty··on Uber loses appeal as top Swiss court rules company is an employer
Uber drivers cannot set their price for their work, which is a pretty big one I would think.
adamdusty··on Using the mold linker for fun and 3x-8x link time speedups
Of course it is! These guys made an interpreter and JIT for C: https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2021/04/27/the-mir-c-inte...
adamdusty··on Ask HN: Why are you here?
I've been a wannabe developer since I graduated college with a BS in physics. I taught myself C#, python, and some C++, for a few different things I was interested in. I'm generally interested in tech hardware and computer science. The HN community incredible experience in all kinds of domains, and so I like to see what people have to say on interesting topics.
adamdusty··on 1x Engineer
I dont think the post mentions anything about what 10x engineers do or don't do. It's just a list of things normal people do.
adamdusty··on How I Built Zig-SQLite
Rust probably had a fairly small "language footprint" when it was only a few years old with no production use cases as well. I've used both in some small hobby projects. I like writing zig significantly more than rust, but we'll see how long the language remains small and compact.
adamdusty··on Will Hare replace C? Or Rust? Or Zig? Or anything else?
I'm not sure how it's ignorant. I sort of prefer the C/C++ way of using/packaging libs. I wouldn't want it with higher level languages like C# or python, but a central repository isn't great in my opinion. Rust has people squatting on package names for no reason. Python packaging is so miserable there are a few different competing 3rd party package managers. NPM has had numerous security issues that have caused way more of a mess than anything C++ related. The C# package manager seems okay, but as far as I know will not package libraries as source code (I'm not sure about that one).

All the package managers I've used have pros and cons, including using none at all.

adamdusty··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
I dont think you can just blanket it under physics. Plenty of controllable systems exist specifically due to physics.
adamdusty··on Founding Uber SRE
Uber was an international company by 2012. The #metoo movement, specifically in regards to weinstein didn't pick up until around mid 2010s as far as I remember. Yes technically it originated earlier but there was an entire decade between the first reference and the actual movement.
adamdusty··on The frenzied world of rare watches
Bulova has dozens of amazing automatic pieces on their site for under $1000, many under $500.
adamdusty··on The frenzied world of rare watches
Only if you live entirely on the internet.

I've never met anyone in real life that actually hates people with money.

adamdusty··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
> By “environment” I don’t mean the local community

Neither do I.

If you think you're learning about social, political, and economic mechanics on a global scale from the news, then I implore you to keep consuming. I've never learned anything from the news that I couldn't have learned talking to someone else who watched it instead.

adamdusty··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
I don't watch or read news, and I feel pretty knowledgeable about my environment. I feel that if I actually engage in my community I am much more plugged in to my environment than if I try to read about it on the news.
adamdusty··on The chaotic collapse of CNN+
What's wrong with being uninformed, especially when it comes to "news"?
adamdusty··on U.S. forgives 40k student loans
I paid my student loans off recently, as I didn't expect the pause to get pushed back again, so I acknowledge I am biased here.

What other loans should the government be forgiving for people's poor decisions? Should the government have paid off all mortgages in 2008? I'd say people that bought in the years or months leading up to the housing crash didn't make particularly bad decisions either, yet I personally know a few different families that never recovered.

Some people drop out, and I agree that those people should have a way to lessen the burden of student debt, but I don't know that people who choose degrees with low financial value should get a free pass more so than people that take on any other particular debt.

adamdusty··on Solar-powered robotic beekeeping
Ah, okay. I misinterpreted what you were saying.
adamdusty··on Solar-powered robotic beekeeping
Local weather stories hardly mean we're fucked. It snowed and hailed in Tucson yesterday. Does that mean we're all saved?
adamdusty··on .NET Myths Dispelled
Do you have any actual examples? I do all my c# in vs code and prefer it to vs proper.
adamdusty··on It takes a PhD to develop that
Those individual workers hurt the project and the community around it by setting the precedent that you need to create your own competing product to verify that bugs can be fixed without PhD research.

Nobody should be harassed over their open source project, but that doesn't mean actions don't trigger reactions.
