adamcw··on Asiana Airlines Flight 214: A Pilot’s Perspective
I'm not familiar with the 18-wheeler anecdote you mentioned. Could you provide a link or details?

That likely means your PATH is out of order, if ordered correctly /usr/local/bin should override /usr/bin. Can save you needing to do that in the future.
adamcw··on Free Official MSIE VM's for Linux and Mac
I'm pretty sure they are sourced from the same VM's.

The only notable difference is that ievms converts (or did when I tried it last) from the VirtualPC copy - MS is now allowing these for download in other formats (Parallels/VMWare/Virtualbox) without needing to convert.

No you cannot. They relaxed the EULA to allow virtualization of Mac OS from a Mac OS host, however. You can also use the same licensed copy that acts as the host.

The EULA revision came along with 10.8. Prior to that you could virtualize 10.7 Server, but once again, only with Mac OS as the host, and only with another licensed copy.

adamcw··on Poll: Have you run a marathon?
I answered no because I am a runner, but I have not run a full marathon yet. I am planning on doing my first one in June.
adamcw··on Android's Google Now services headed for Chrome, too
According to the documentation, it is, but I haven't tried snooping on the client myself. So I'm not sure if the data is obfuscated in any way.

"This means when a change occurs on one Google Chrome client, a part of the infrastructure effectively sends a tiny XMPP message, like a chat message, to other actively connected clients telling them to sync."

Grooveshark did this without inking the necessary deals. If I understand correctly, their library is provided by their users uploading.

Gotta concur with this. Just because you can drape something over yourself, that's still not the same as having it fit.

Entry tier support usually are fairly inexperienced reps. They are expected to stick to the script, because they typically don't know enough to go off-script. It can make an individual call longer, but it makes most calls shorter by standardizing the procedures that fix most cases.

The scripts are designed for solving issues that novice users have. That said, you are putting the rep in a position of possibly getting disciplined if you try to force them off script. At least at some of the places I've worked in the past. (I don't do support now, this was several years ago.)

I've also had horrendous customer service from 1and1. Minor billing problems for several months on end, which would have likely been easily remedied if they had competent phone support. (This was about 3 years ago, so maybe they've gotten better since then. They have already lost my business, and they'd be hard pressed to win it back.)

I have worked in several call centers and well past tier one support. Having people on the line costs money, you are instructed to get them off the line as soon as possible.

For tier 1 or 2 support, they are also working off a script, and very few reps actually know what's happening outside of that script. Forcing them off script is the quickest way to get bad information and for them to likely get punished.
