actuator··on Churchill’s Famine: The killing of three million is a story waiting to be retold
If you are going to argue on the basis of systems you don't understand, at least get your facts right. The class you are blaming is not the merchant class.

It seems quite interesting that this class becomes the focal point of any attack based on ignorance.

Also, your other replies about jatts is definitely not true. There are various sources that class them in the merchant class responsible for agriculture and trading.

actuator··on Meta has started its latest round of layoffs, focusing on business groups
Stock price is forward looking. Meta does not pay dividends, so maybe it was the belief that the new initiatives won't work out and the old money sources will wither away.
actuator··on Meta has started its latest round of layoffs, focusing on business groups
Unless you can prove it with specifics for each company, this is patently false and a sweeping generalization.

Companies like Meta were all gung ho about remote work in 2021, when they hadn't seen the long term impact of it. The push inside Meta for WFH not being as effective for new employees started coming up in 2023 after the performance evaluations were done and they noticed a trend. You might argue that the data analysis might have been incorrect, but that's another question. The same company is also heavily cutting on office space.

I know people in tech are pro remote but let us not come up with these wild unsubstantiated theories to support what we like.

Remote work might not be as effective for every company on the same level, maybe it is the culture, maybe it is role dependent, but it is simplistically not just about some shadowy real estate moguls.

Which country do you live in? A company doesn't have to actually market in your country as such, they do it where it matters and the rest flows in other places.

Really?

Something has to pay for the infra costs.

Either tax money, ads or subscription fees. Choose one

actuator··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
- You can try premium

- It is not $60 steak equivalent. More like it is the price of McDonalds burger itself.

- It is not an untested product. You are getting an option to pay for the burger and eat it, rather than watch a 30 min ad to eat it for free.

People will hate Google/FB ad model and at the same time also not pay for a paid tier that removes the ads.

Oh no, I didn't mean moderators are biased. I don't think that is the case at all.

I was making the point of the HN users. Specially the characteristic of downvoting and negating criticism in this case.

You are right though, because I strongly feel about the anti competitive issues Apple indulges in, maybe I visit those threads more and tend to notice them.

Although, I think there is a positive bias as well, which I care less about. Like one of the commenter mentioned that Final Cut Pro being launched on iPad was the top post through large parts of the day.

actuator··on Google I/O 2023
> There are plenty of non-apple speakers that come with Spotify trials.

Spotify has to pay for these and has to compete for this with other music streaming companies.

Also, comparison with smart speakers is disingenuous. There are a billion iPhone users itself. No non big tech company smart speaker comes even close.

> Spotify is still dominating music streaming

Because of nailing the product early on and being world class in playlists and music recommendations. Even if Apple music comes 80% close, just by holding distribution advantage, they will capture that market.

actuator··on Google I/O 2023
Spotify doesn't get to offer you that when you are setting up your new phone. You have to know about the company and go and install it.

It is good that you are using Spotify and supporting an independent company, but as I was saying defaults and ease of access matters. Spotify is not playing in a level field and regulators have failed to ensure that they are able to.

actuator··on Google I/O 2023
Google just doesn't have the volumes to provide products in all countries. Providing sales integrations and support is costly and if you don't have volumes, your amortized cost over a device is high.
actuator··on Google I/O 2023
No one is forced to buy Airpods, but the first class integration that the product gets which others can't gives it a competitive advantage. This is besides the power to push the product through different channels to customers of iPhones, iPads etc.

Another example is, no one is forced to buy Apple Music, but for sure it pops up front and center when you buy a iOS device or Mac. In fact, even when I keep removing the application from the Mac, on a version update it comes back again. It has integrations into the system and other core system apps that other products can't get and defaults matter. On top of this they will give you free subscription for 3/6 months when you buy a new device knowing full well that most customers won't bother cancelling. All of this behavior takes the air out of competitors like Spotify and is extremely anti competitive.

I don't even want to get started on iCloud etc.

actuator··on Google I/O 2023
HN tends to bias towards pro Apple.

You would see people doing mental gymnastics trying to defend their closed anti competitive practices, disregard for standards. I would cheer a Sennheiser/Bose more than any version of Airpods, I would rather not have a multi trillion dollar company gobble up other industries through unfair advantages.

Seeing a hacker crowd do this is just beyond bizzare.

Lazy journalism. In other words, their code might not cover all cases.

actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
The amusing thing is, even in India, it starts mattering less once you become rich. For example, you would typically find it is the middle class or below who are more attached to the idea of marriages between similar groups.
actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
I did write

> There is no one true book for the dharmic faiths and over time the concept was rigidified by the people in power to keep their power.

The thing you see today is not what was intended. We have seen throughout in history when you give one group power, it tries to ensure that the power stays with it; this is what the so called upper castes basically did.

In modern times, why would you want to become another caste? In India, groups are dying to be called a backward or lower caste these days

actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
We can't be sure of the fact that only Gita has been fed to it; and as my reply showed, it is showing that the caste is fluid as the reply mentioned anyone can become a Brahmin.
actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
The concept of caste(the Indian words for this mean something different) as you understand in modern times was not the rigid structure you see today. There is no one true book for the dharmic faiths and over time the concept was rigidified by the people in power to keep their power.

I asked the bot

> Can anyone become a Brahmin?

> Yes, anyone can become a Brahmin through their actions and qualities. One's birth does not determine their caste or status. It is their actions that determine their place in society. As stated in the Bhagavad Gita, "One who is equal to all beings, seeing oneself in everyone, and seeing all beings in oneself, attains the highest Brahman, because one has attained perfect peace" (BG 6.32). This means that one who has attained the qualities of compassion, selflessness, and understanding can attain the highest state of Brahmanhood. Therefore, it is important to focus on one's actions and qualities rather than their birth or social status.

actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
I just tried your same question and got a very different response.

> Is it right for lower castes to expect to be treated equal to the upper castes?

> Dear Arjuna, in the Bhagavad Gita, I teach that all beings are equal and that caste should not determine one's worth or status in society. In fact, I say, "The four castes have been created by me according to the quality of their own nature and action, but I am not in them; I am beyond them." (BG 4.13)

Therefore, it is not right for lower castes to be treated unfairly or unequally, as every person has the same value and should be treated with respect and dignity. As stated in BG 5.18, "The wise see with equal vision a learned and gentle Brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater."

In conclusion, the concept of caste should not be used to discriminate against or mistreat anyone, as we are all equal in the eyes of the divine.

https://ibb.co/qnhTg8p

I am not sure where you got your replies from, but this opens an interesting attack vector as someone can just put up a site with shadowy data sources to defame a faith system or mislead people. People might have more faith in something they think knows about the corpus.

actuator··on India’s religious AI chatbots speak in the voice of god – and condone violence
Not really, the problem is the bot might not do a good job of explaining the thing in isolation.

There is no concept of non believer in the dharmic faith systems, everyone is allowed to have their belief systems and one faith doesn't impinge on others belief or faith. So, the concept of taking a life for that does not exist.

The whole concept of "is taking a life okay for dharma" means something else. Dharma does not mean religion. In fact the specific example of Bhagvad Gita is, a warrior prince is in doubts about fighting his cousins for his kingdom because it will lead to bloodshed. It is mentioned as he is a prince it is his duty to fight for his kingdom, this is alright.

An example for this will be, if in the current Russia Ukraine conflict Russia invades Ukraine; it is in the dharma of the Ukraine's military to fight them even if it causes bloodshed. However, the whole concept of Dharma and how a battle should be conducted would forbid some things that you actually end up seeing in real world conflicts.

Yeah, that's what my assumption was. US has the best tax situation for married people that I know of.
actuator··on The core problem with hamburger menus
I have less of a problem with web UIs but when this sort of minimalistic design starts invading even washrooms, that's where I draw the line.

There are no door handles for cubicle doors, you have to push them inside after seeing the separation lines. The first time I went to such a washroom, I was confused where should I enter from.

The paper towels are hidden behind the mirrors, if someone pulls and the next one doesn't flow down, you really will have no way of knowing the paper towels were there.

There are many other such things. I get that minimalistic design looks clean, but do you know what's better, accessibility.

Yeah, as long as OP is fine with paycut, they can move into a lot of European or Asian cities with good dating options
actuator··on Rising Share of U.S. Adults Are Living Without a Spouse or Partner
Surely $600K as a couple income is even on the top endz even in tech. So, for most normal couples like where one earns $300K and the other $100K, filing as a married couple is better, no?

Or am I misunderstanding something

actuator··on Rising Share of U.S. Adults Are Living Without a Spouse or Partner
At least in my case what I have observed is, the explosion of technology has made it easier to be happy alone quite easy. So the absence of a romantic interest or a roommate is felt less. When I have dated, I have loved being outside of the home, but I have been quite comfortable not having a partner as well.

Also, online dating and the ever constant flow of people in your face there has skewed my perspective and has led to a phase where it is harder to commit and stay with someone, so I just find it easier to be alone than be with someone and always be not sure whether this is the right thing.

Dating apps and their illusion of so much choice and options is a net negative to the actual dating structure; but maybe from a sociological perspective, this is where the society should head, I am not smart enough to comment on that.

actuator··on Rising Share of U.S. Adults Are Living Without a Spouse or Partner
Wait, I thought US essentially doubles the tax slabs if you are married and file as a couple. So it works out well for couples with income skew
actuator··on ISRO successfully conducts landing experiment of the Reusable Launch Vehicle
Ah, that makes more sense.

> I don't expect anything to come out of this in this decade, until after HSP program launches.

From a commercial perspective, wouldn't putting more money into heavy launch vehicles and reusability make more sense? Russia's space business will take a hit with the sanctions and that leaves the market open for a price competitive provider other than SpaceX?

actuator··on ISRO successfully conducts landing experiment of the Reusable Launch Vehicle
This is a technology demonstrator so it makes sense to start with just a drop but looking at the size of the launch vehicle and the parameters tested here, seems like the progress is coming on slow as the article mentions this was first tested in 2016.

I am not very familiar with rockets, so this might be out of ignorance but wouldn't the plane like characteristics of this TD make it hard to use for actual launch rockets as they travel quite a bit up and having the winged body might add extra overhead compared to a cylindrical stage.
