acolumb··on How tracking pixels work
I use Firefox and what is ironic is the integration with Pocket - an on-by-default service that has tracking pixels [1]

acolumb··on Vim 101: How to Start Using the Text Editor for Developers
Unrelated, but do people on HN have a different definition for the word "trivial?" It's used so frequently that I wanted some clarity.

Where I come from, trivial means "of little importance," ex: The Kardashians' drama is frequently over trivial matters.

Could you elaborate on how you got TTRSS to scrape?
acolumb··on Computer Files Are Going Extinct
With the advent of database-managed, self-hosted personal clouds (i.e Nextcloud/Droppy,) the difference is even smaller. It's developing into a self-hosted "just works" personal cloud ecosystem.

acolumb··on Apple Plans End of iTunes
Now, iTunes backups (which historically took up gobs of space on the tiny MacBook drives of years past,) only save app data, and restoring will take up the aforementioned bandwidth.

You CAN run a terminal with a jailbroken iPad.

Just sayin'

acolumb··on Sony and Microsoft set rivalry aside for cloud gaming alliance
That analogy is the biggest thing to happen for Linux porting since Valve's Proton SDK - all future MS-funded Xbox One games do come to Windows (albeit as UWPs) and run great.
acolumb··on America's loneliness epidemic: A systemic risk to organizations
I've traveled to France a few times. Whenever I walk through the towns, I notice a sense of noncompetition and inclusivity amongst the school-aged children there.

This social system eliminates the temporary high that one gets from their "15 minutes" of being the king of the American hill, while substantially decreasing the amount of depression and anger.

acolumb··on All Chromebooks will also be Linux laptops going forward
IIRC Chromium OS doesn't collect the data the way the closed-source Chrome OS does. It's a great OS for getting work done (on Gapps, of course.)

Debian (and all other userspace-run operating systems) are in a container.

acolumb··on All Chromebooks will also be Linux laptops going forward
To be fair, there is a 15-minute mod (mrchromebox.tech) that allows for all Intel Chromebooks =<Kaby Lake to install an open UEFI that supports Windows, Linux and even Clover/MacOS in some cases.
