acollins1331··on Apple: We're not handing over Safari URLs to Tencent, just IP addresses
There aren't scholarly sources on this stuff. Just stop by sometime and read the drivel.
acollins1331··on “My Google account got suspended because of NewPipe”
These huge TOS agreements are akin to governmental authoritarian control. Everyone has broken something in them, we are all a criminal. Knowing this, we all live in fear knowing that it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' the government/corporate overlord can cancel everything we've been working on or living for because of an obscure clause that no one has ever read, which was created for this very purpose.

If they had to change their title to not be clickbait for Blendle, maybe just assume it's a clickbait article

Oh hey, I figured out why you can't get a job as a software developer. You didn't mention in your first post you refuse to get good at interviews.
acollins1331··on China's New Cybersecurity Program: No Place to Hide
Wait... You trust Google to keep our information secret? Don't they literally allow access to all our information for money through targeted ads? Didn't Google just admit to reading all of our emails for like a decade now?
acollins1331··on Driverless cars are stuck in a jam
As a counter-point I think large parts of driving have already been automated. We aren't far from long lines of semi trucks following each other through Kansas and then a human hops into them at the next depot to park and unload it.
acollins1331··on iPadOS review: The iPad is dead, long live the iPad
Sounds like an apple problem, not a problem of us power users who moved to something better.

You're missing the bigger picture. You're debating on basically becoming a terrorist. Which in small isolated incidents might be shown to work, but then the institutional response happens. For example, look at the middle East, they can do a few attacks but when it gets too big the UN or US or whatever comes in with huge armies and destroys the country the terrorists were trying to fight for. Not good.

In this case if you try to commit domestic terrorism here, it may initially be successful, but then the institutional powers will respond by passing laws and turning the suspicion on their own citizens making life shittier for everyone here.

So for the love of God, please don't try to seat powerful people (or anyone at all).

Oh sure because the air roads are going to be packed as densely as the ground roads with planes flying tail to tail in multiple lanes. /S
acollins1331··on The long history of parents complaining about their kids’ homework
If you can score 150% in a class it was probably a joke class to begin with, that's some ridiculous opportunity for grade inflation.
acollins1331··on The long history of parents complaining about their kids’ homework
Yes.
acollins1331··on EFF Wins Access to License Plate Reader Data to Study Law Enforcement Use
Even easier to just not worry about getting a warrant.
acollins1331··on Pizza robot makes 300 pizzas per hour
Even though it looks the same, it probably won't taste the same. A lot of the issue with frozen pizza is that it is frozen, which means the ingredients are not fresh. These ones could theoretically have fresher ingredients. That will matter a lot when it comes to the dough.
acollins1331··on We can’t trust AI systems built on deep learning alone
Yes. Though arguably this is just the same thing as the traditional approach to deep learning, which is to select features to input into a model. You don't always just have to train on raw information, pre-processing the input data and calculating specific features that we know, as humans, will be important for the final result and feeding those in addition to the raw data is a common approach. Don't see much difference between this and taking the output of a network and running it through a few decision trees. Most publishable projects applying AI you see typically have these type of human interaction on both sides of models.
acollins1331··on At Tech’s Leading Edge, Worry About a Concentration of Power
Oh, the career is in academia and research.
acollins1331··on Goodhart’s Law: Are Academic Metrics Being Gamed?
Yes. But a good department will know you for who you are. Plenty of great science takes a long time do do, and it is known it's hard to get funding for long-term monitoring experiments. Most grant money is for new and innovative ideas and no one is pushing out one of those every year. And if you are then you're not doing 90% of the work on any of them.
acollins1331··on At Tech’s Leading Edge, Worry About a Concentration of Power
But I do AI and I work at a university. Developing AI might be too expensive if you're going for larger architectures and eeking out an extra % or two in a kaggle like problem. Most advances in machine learning to come though are in fields where there has been little activity. I'm currently en process of making a career out of using very basic machine learning methods and applying them to physical science problems because 95% of the people in the field don't know how (problem of tenure). This opens up lots of opportunities for funding though. NSF etc will literally just throw money at you if you say AI and that you'll apply it to any problem.
acollins1331··on Podcast sponsorship revenue continues to fuel NPR’s financial growth
Yeah so social studies based on internet polls aren't science (see parents) and making decisions or drawing conclusions from them is probably worse than going off anecdotal evidence, because at least you aren't confident in how right you are when going that route.
acollins1331··on 600k Images Removed from ImageNet After Art Project Exposes Racist Bias
It could just be a path forward. In America a lot of the time we can't get any progress unless it's a racism issue. Things like gerrymandering or marijuana legalization get their first pushes because the most blatant group that suffers are POCs. The fact that it harms everyone is a little lost on most people, but in the end the racism cudgel can be effective for positive societal change. In this case, we can use it to get rid of automatically being identified for crimes or whatever by an AI.
acollins1331··on AI competitions don’t produce useful models
It's also possible that if you have a lot of models that all score very close to each other that they just ALL work.
acollins1331··on Oh shit, my weekend project turned into an App Store Best New App (2018)

acollins1331··on RideCheck: Connecting you with help when you need it

acollins1331··on Men Arrested at Courthouse Say They Were Sent to Test Its Security
It's in the interest of the lawyers working for the state to enrich themselves and their lawyer friends who will probably take the other side of the case. Money for lawyers everywhere! America works like this because our laws are written by them.
acollins1331··on My derelict pub still got TripAdvisor reviews
All zoos are like that and incredibly sad from the inside even if they look fine to the guests. The only ones that have a moral leg to stand on are the rehabilitation ones that use proceeds to help the animals, but it's still a very wishy washy thing to be running an animal prison for profit.
