aclimatt··on Students at Fake University Say They Were Collateral Damage in Sting Operation
Absolutely. It was downright sinister of the DHS to implicate the students in this when they themselves legitimized the school in no less than three different places. To quote the article, "if you can't trust the government, who can you trust?"

I understand what the government says by "you have to know the law", but it's idiocy to expect everyone to be a lawyer, and instead we all use our best judgement.

Maybe the signs were clear that UNNJ were fake, maybe they weren't, but fraud implies a knowing and willful attempt to break the law, and almost all of these cases seem far from it. It's shameful to make most of these students appear in immigration court.

aclimatt··on The Powerful Emotional Pull of Old Video Games (2014)
For me, the nostalgia is very much attributed to the music. Music in general can be very nostalgic, but a 30 second track that you listened to for hours a day on repeat as a child can really become a part of you.

Much for that reason, Ocarina of Time has always been top of my list for nostalgic games, and the score was arguably some of Koji Kondo's finest work.

aclimatt··on Obama at SXSW: ‘Absolutist view’ on digital privacy cannot prevail
> keeping them from having this power does not make their jobs more difficult than the 200 year baseline.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. The problem is that the content they were looking for 200, 100, and even 20 years ago used to be physical. Now it's digital.

Previously when they searched your home, they'd be looking for physical evidence -- mail, letters, receipts, paraphernalia, what have you. Today, a lot of that information has moved to electronic devices, taking what was once safeguarded by your front door, and putting it behind a new electronic lock.

I'm not commenting specifically on what powers should or shouldn't be available to law enforcement, but I think it's pretty clear that the situation has changed from 200 years ago, and we should be making decisions in the current context.

aclimatt··on Peanut allergy theory backed up by new research
On the topic of food allergies, there is a treatment called oral immunotherapy that supposedly can cure peanut and other allergies in both children and adults.

http://stanmed.stanford.edu/2014fall/i-can-eat-it.html

Essentially they introduce increasingly larger doses of the allergen until your body develops a tolerance to it (essentially what the OP claims, but as you're no longer a baby, it takes a lot longer).

The only caveat is that you are required to continue to eat the allergen for the rest of your life, to maintain your tolerance.

Stanford is currently enrolling in its peanut OIT study for adults. If you have a peanut allergy and have always dreamed of eating a PB&J without worry, now's your chance!

aclimatt··on Austin: No Place to Go but Up
I think an elevated bikeway would definitely be less terrible than an elevated train or six-lane freeway. It'd be both narrower and quieter. It would still be kind of unfortunate for those under it though, especially if they wanted to proceed with the "urban elevated parkway"-type concept (which granted is pretty cool for the people above).

That said, from the sound of the traffic problems in the article, I think Austin is going to need a lot more than just bike lanes. It's expensive, but they might need to bite the bullet and build a proper subway.

aclimatt··on Austin: No Place to Go but Up
One of the main issues with elevated roadways / trains / bike lanes / what have you over city streets is the relatively dark and undesirable areas they create below them. Seattle had this problem back at the turn of the century, and it generally doesn't create a nice urban atmosphere to have massive elevated roadways above the main city, even if it's trains or bikes that run on them.

That's why cities like San Francisco consider tearing down their elevated freeways and replacing them with surface streets -- it creates a more desirable atmosphere when you're below. (Think the Embarcadero.)

Chicago's L is efficient, certainly, but the entire downtown core is hidden under a dark, loud, shaking train track. It's not the most pleasant thing to spend your time around.

aclimatt··on Ad Blocking Irony
This is actually typically against the ad networks' terms of use. In all AdChoices ads, you'll see a small "X" in the corner. If you click it, one of the first options is to report the ad obscuring the content of the page. I'll admit I don't know what the result ends up being, but I'd hope that they get in touch with the implementor to tell them to fix their ad.

aclimatt··on A LinkedIn Hack That Led to a $120k Investment
A nitpick that is somewhat related to the thesis, but I think still relevant: I dislike how success in this context is completely centered around raising money, and nothing to do with actually running a profitable company and delivering value.

The main point of the article was to run a LinkedIn ad to get accepted into AngelPad and raise money, and that's totally fair (and commendable!).

But sprinkled throughout the article, there are quotes like:

> I've co-founded two startups that have raised ~$90 million in venture capital (Shyp and Vungle) and have created hundreds of jobs in five different countries.

> Vungle has grown to hundreds of employees and over $25 million in funding.

Is that really the metric of success we're going for? Give anybody $90 million and they can pretty trivially create hundreds of jobs.

I don't know what Vungle's revenue is, but if we're not in a bubble yet, raising a bunch of money, leaving the company, and touting it "hustling" isn't helping.

EDIT: I'd like to clarify briefly that I'm not downplaying raising money. Going out and fundraising is really hard (I've done it), but so aren't dozens of other tasks at a company.

+1 to anybody who is able to successfully bring in funding, but I've met too many people who have felt like their company has "made it" once they've raised money -- when in fact that's just the beginning.

aclimatt··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
I believe the issue is that by passing a law prohibiting granting a marriage license to a same-sex couple, a State is violating that couple's Fourteenth Amendment right to life, liberty, and equal protection, among other things.

I will admit that there were a lot of high-soaring words that might have covered up the legal basis, but to me, the legal component of the ruling was simply:

1) The court finds that marriage is an inherent part of life and liberty (arguably the shakiest part)

2) A State passing a law prohibiting marriage by one specific group of people is taking away their rights of life and liberty

3) Therefore, said law is found to violate the Fourteenth Amendment which grants life, liberty, and equal protection under the law to all United States citizens, and is thus unconstitutional.

aclimatt··on Why CoffeeScript Isn't the Answer
My problem with CoffeeScript has always been the syntax vs. semantics issue. CoffeeScript saw a big opportunity to improve JavaScript semantics and help programmers more easily avoid the JavaScript minefield ("var" and "===" for example), but in doing so decided "while we're at it, let's overhaul the general syntax too".

Gratuitously changing "function" to "->" for no reason other than removing characters seems to introduce more brand new idiosyncrasies than it's worth. If the goal were to improve JavaScript as a language by smoothing over a few of the gotchas, which of course would require a few syntax updates, then I think it would be immensely valuable. (Think SCSS instead of the original "Sass".) But it seems as if the authors were more troubled that JavaScript didn't write like Ruby, so they made a new language that happens to compile to JavaScript. And now I have two languages to choose from, each with pros and cons and their own gotchas, adding more complexity to my decisions when I was hoping for simplification.

aclimatt··on StackMob is shutting down
It's not that a service can't stick around post-acquisition, it's that in any company, you can have sweeping changes on the turn of a dime. One large senior management change and entire departments can get shut down or reorganized within a week.

I've seen a $1B public company start winding down a massive revenue-making division within the course of a conference call. Parse is a great service; I certainly hope Facebook doesn't do that and don't imagine they will any time soon, but nothing is impossible.

EDIT: And though you certainly know Facebook's internals better than we do, as an outsider, the risk of an acquired department shutting down is a lot higher if there's a potential to not part of the core business strategy.

aclimatt··on High Speed Trains are Killing the European Railway Network
I'm not so sure.

I took the fated Trenhotel Joan Miró that the author talks about. It was a little over 100€ and covered the distance in twelve hours, like the author said. After getting off that train, economically I could not fathom why anybody would ever subject themselves to that experience again.

The 100€ got me a seat in the back of the train in a semi-reclined seat (the least expensive ticket I could buy). I booked it about four weeks in advance. For 150€, I could get an actual bed to sleep in (four to a compartment), and the price/service level went up from there. If the train had free food or even just free water, Wi-Fi, showers, and such like you describe (at least at that price level), it'd potentially be a different experience. But Trenhotel's stock is about as old as it gets, and what you get for the base price of 100€ makes for quite an unfortunate twelve hours.

I just went to Vueling, and I can fly from Barcelona to Paris for 40€ in two hours. Even with security, time to/from the airport and such, I'm still saving time and money. Copious amounts of baggage is the only thing left out, but I could pay 100€ to check piles and piles of bags, and now I spend slightly more than the Trenhotel and arrive five times faster.

High speed trains make sense for semi-long distances. Paris to Amsterdam is a great example. Three hours on modern equipment is very doable, and a plane ride can't beat that in time (fixed costs of security and required early arrival are too high). Comfort is superior, and the price will come down. The author makes the point that the cost is 2x but the travel time is only slightly faster. These routes were just inaugurated, and the stock is fresh out of the factory. Give it a few years, and they will come down. I'll bet you the old "vintage" routes that the author pines over were pretty darn expensive when they too were first inaugurated.

For the <4 hour trips, high speed rail is excellent, and I believe those prices will fall. But anything longer than that, forget the night trains. They're only semi-useful for tourists and backpackers, and I'm shocked they still operate. I'll fly, thanks.

They are not asking for pre-orders, they are asking for pledges, and have a very clear disclaimer in the top right about what that means. If the product page itself were to claim that they were pre-orders for a product that couldn't ship yet, then it as well could potentially be violating card agreements as well as the rule from the FTC.

To clarify about the pre-order issue: There's nothing inherently wrong with asking for funds to push the development of a product forward. Kickstarter has done a great job of promoting that model, and the world has seen a lot of good come out of it.

However, Kickstarter has also done a lot of work to educate the public about the risk of this type of funding (certainly to their own legal benefit or otherwise), and thus the public can better understand that they are dontating money toward a dream, versus buying the next generation video game console a few weeks before it comes out.

Coin is taking your money to bring a product to market, while acting like that product already exists. Answers in the FAQ like "we don't take your shipping address because you might move" are a willfully ignorant slap in the face, because they are far more likely the ones at risk of going out of business than me moving houses.

If they said very clearly that you were funding a new product with all the inherent risks, like Lockitron did, this would be a different story. But not educating the consumer about what's actually going on is exactly what the FTC is trying to protect against.

aclimatt··on Switzerland’s Proposal to Pay People
I don't see how inflation would not completely negate the effects of this without some strict fiscal policy in tandem. If you are essentially raising the average wage by X, would prices not rise accordingly? Those who make X plus a salary would not be able to afford the mansions of yesterday, because those who make X plus an even higher salary can afford to outbid them. Likewise, basic necessities like food can easily increase in price to what people can afford to pay.
