For the above pic I asked "What is wrong with the image?"

Result: - It totally missed the most obvious one - six fingers.

Instead it said this:

Based on a close inspection of the image, here are the things that are "wrong" or anomalous, indicating that it is likely an AI-generated image:

- The Thumb Anatomy: This is the most obvious error. The digit in the thumb's position (far left) looks exactly like a long index finger. A natural human thumb has two segments (phalanges) and is shorter and thicker, opposing the other fingers. This digit appears to have three segments and is roughly the same length and shape as the other fingers, giving the hand the appearance of having five fingers and no thumb.

- Unnatural Skin Texture: The skin is unnaturally smooth, waxy, and free of normal human imperfections like distinct pores, fine wrinkles, or hair. It has a "plastic" or "airbrushed" look typical of generative AI.

- Palm Lines: The creases on the palm are vague and generic. They don't follow the distinct pattern of major flexion creases (like the heart, head, and life lines) found on a real human hand.

- Wrist Connection: The connection between the hand and the wrist looks slightly distorted, with tendons that appear too prominent and smooth for the pose.

[Edit: 3.0 is same as 2.5 - both answered almost identically]

achow··on Ultrasonic device dramatically speeds harvesting of water from the air
The published paper:

(Pdf link) hhttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-65586-2.pdf

Key takeaways:

- Traditional (Solar): Typically limited to 1 cycle per day. Sorbents collect moisture at night and use sunlight to release it during the day. Requires a large horizontal footprint to maximize exposure to sunlight.

- Ultrasonic: Can perform multiple cycles per day. The extraction takes only 2 mins, and the hydrogels used can adsorb moisture in about 40 minutes. This allows the system to continuously cycle 24/7, rather than waiting for the sun. Allows for vertical stacking (e.g., 5+ rows high) without losing efficiency, drastically increasing the water output for the same amount of land area.

- Ultrasonic per day output: 3.25 L (1 layer) to 16.25 L (5 layer)

achow··on Affinity Studio now free
Look at it this way, this could challenge Adobe to make Creative Suite free and charge only for AI in their product (one can dream at least).
achow··on Affinity Studio now free
This site seems to be the old one - they don't mention their acquistion by Canva in 'About Us' section.

https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/about/

Also there is no link anywhere for downloading their products.

The current site seems to what OP has posted: affinity.studio

Strange choice to keep the old site up and running, and to complicate things the old site is the top result when searched.

achow··on Generative AI Image Editing Showdown
Thank you for the pointer. I was struggling with Nanobanana for editing an image which it had created earlier, but Reve gave me the edit result exactly the way I wanted in the first pass.

My usecase: An image of a cartoon character, holding an object and looking at it. Wanted to edit so that the character no longer has the object in her hand and now looking towards the camera.

Result Nanobanana: At first pass it only removed the object that the character was holding, however there was no change in her eyeline, she was still looking down at her now empty hand. Second prompt explicitly asked to change the eyeline to look at camera. Unsuccessful. Third attempt asked the character to look towards ceiling. Success but unusable edit as I wanted the character to look at the camera.

Result Reve: At first attempt it gave me 4 options and all 4 are usable. It not only removed the object and changed the eyeline of the character to look at the camera, but it also made posture changes so that the empty hands were appropriately positioned, and now since the character is in a different situation (sans the object that was holding her attention) Reve posed the character in different ways which were very appropriate - which I didn't think of prompting for earlier (maybe because my focus was on immediate need - object removal and change in eyeline).

On a little more digging found this writeup which will make me to signup for their product.

achow··on Things managers do that leaders never would
Here's something not directly related that doesn't get mentioned enough, if at all:

Lack of empathy for managers from their teams and the organization.

Good managers are often caught between a rock and a hard place, trying to balance competing interests and navigate difficult situations, since they also have managers and business priorities. Depending on the team size, this pressure is almost on a logarithmic scale. I have seen people choose the IC path because they consider a manager's job too stressful, and they can be paid the same (or sometimes even more than their managers).

I agree with the general sentiment here in the comments section — the article sounds good at first glance, but it's missing the nuances that get in the way of a manager acting like a leader.

> At the center of this strategy is Japan’s position as the second-largest iodine producer in the world, a necessary ingredient in the manufacturing of perovskite solar cells.

Perovskites are a type of crystalline material, [most common are] methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI3).. researchers have found that gaseous iodine produced by MAPbI3 make them inherently unstable.. and may not be a fixable issue.

Few days back when tariff was 125% China said..

Beijing indicated on Friday that this would be the last time it matched the U.S., in the event that Trump takes his tariffs any higher.

"Even if the U.S. continues to impose even higher tariffs, it would no longer have any economic significance and would go down as a joke in the history of world economics," the Finance Ministry's statement added.

achow··on E Ink’s color ePaper tech gets supersized for outdoor displays
> ..that puts it into a pretty narrow band of application of displaying information that only changes infrequently

On the contrary I would imagine that 99% of information displayed in outdoors is static in nature and does not need something in the range of 24fps.

After all once upon a time 100% of the world's outdoor displays were static, and things were fine. Time Square should not be a benchmark.

achow··on Google kills diversity hiring targets
I'm all for DEI, however you too seem to misunderstand one critical aspect, the 'E' in DEI. The 'E' (Equity) aspect is very nuanced and if not understood and communicated well would lead to deadlocked discussions

Equity factors in historical and sociopolitical factors that affect opportunities and experiences. This could mean that if we have a candidate who seems to be with lesser qualification then they potentially can be hired over a more qualified candidate.

This is with reasoning that due to past decades (and centuries) of historical situations a candidate was led through a path which landed them with a 'lesser' qualification. So, now if we continue to correct this historical situation then sometime in future the need for Equity would disappear, since that future generation is result of a equitable society - then no more excuses, if you have lesser qualification then it is your doing and not society's.
