aceofspades19··on Installing VLC Media Player voids your speaker warranty
I used to work for Dell tech support, and I used to install VLC on customer's machines all the time..woops. At that time there was no rule against it and we generally assumed that software couldn't damage hardware. When I worked there, Dell seemed to have one of the more lenient warranty policies of any company.
aceofspades19··on Fixing Windows 8 (2013)
Have you ever done any troubleshooting in Windows? I spent over a year as tech support for Dell supporting Windows, and I honestly can't say that Windows is any easier to fix. Most of the time(outside of PEBKAC errors), I ended up a) enter obscure commands in cmd b) making an obscure edit to the registry or c) re installing windows. No operating system is easy for end users to fix when something isn't working right and at least in linux you very rarely have to reinstall.

Your example of double clicking on setup.exe to fix the wifi is pretty wrong. First of all, you have to find the .exe file which is pretty hard for joe average and you have to make sure its the right one, etc.

aceofspades19··on Bro pages: like man pages, but with examples only
Both me and my girlfriend work in tech and she wasn't offended by the name 'bropages'. Furthermore, she disagreed with your comment completely. She doesn't feel excluded or discriminated from the name 'bropages'. Hell, I even call her dude all the time and it doesn't bother her in the slightest.

There as an episode of a tv show called community where they tried to make a mascot that wasn't offensive to anyone. It ended up being a "human" that had no face and the letter H on the front. I don't think anyone that shows off a project here should be attacked for it being offensive to some subset of people here unless it explicitly encourages hate.

aceofspades19··on Edward Snowden whereabouts unknown as US presses Russia
On 2., if you have studied any economic theory, you would know that in the long run the real value of goods and wages stays the same, its only the nominal value that changes in the long run. So no, you have not been 'robbed' via inflation, and thats silly to say anyways because inflation affects everyone.
aceofspades19··on Connecting the PRISM Dots: A New Theory on How PRISM Works
Just curious, is there anywhere in the constitution that it says it only applies to US citizens?
aceofspades19··on We Need A Standard Layered Image Format
And why are we storing binary data? The whole point of SVG is everything is in XML unless I'm very mistaken
aceofspades19··on We Need A Standard Layered Image Format
Whats wrong with SVG? Doesn't it accomplish what the OP wants to do already and is already a standard supported by a lot of applications? I must be missing something here
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
I think we will just have to live with the fact that driving 2000 lbs of steel is going to be dangerous no matter how you slice it. We can definitely try to make it safer but there is still going to be some risk to it.
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
Not everyone can afford to move, for me its cheaper to stay where I am and drive to school then to move. If I were to move I would have to work more and go into debt more, school is not cheap in North America. Even if I did move, I still would not be able to see friends and family living in the city I'm in without a lot of hassle.
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
Yeah thats exactly my point, waiting until 19025 to get a license is pretty harsh if you don't live in a big city
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
Yes but what about people starting university where I live at 18? You kinda missed my main point
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
A thousand times this. It seems like no one cares about the elderly driving but they are frothing at the mouth to punish young drivers and make increasingly harder - and non-nonsensical restrictions on them. But a 90 year old man that can't see and hear can drive as much as he wants without any restrictions even though he is arguably higher risk than a young person who can see, hear and react faster
aceofspades19··on Why aren't younger Americans driving anymore?
Yeah that works until you live in an area without any useful public transit. I live in BC and in my town you can't go anywhere without a car, and I have to drive 40km to the next town for some of my university classes and there is NO bus route at all to get to those classes. I'm only 21, how would you propose I get to class if I didn't have my drivers license? The problem in North America is that a lot of places do not have public transportation so you have to drive and not everyone's parents can drive them _everywhere_ _all the time_.

Aside from that, all of your anecdotes could happen to anyone at any age if they don't have any experience driving, hell your first anecdote could have happened to a 40 year old if they didn't know how to drive. I disagree that age makes that much of a difference in driving, inexperience is the problem and you can't avoid that.

aceofspades19··on Fliers Must Turn Off Devices, but It’s Not Clear Why
1. Not all devices with a computer chip have radios, my TI-84 calculator has a Z-80 processor but there is no radio in it 2. Aircraft radios operate on a very different frequency then consumer electronics, and I'm pretty sure the FCC wouldn't allow consumer electronics to operate on the same frequency as the radios in a cockpit regardless

aceofspades19··on Buying VMWare Fusion: A lesson in how to drive customers away
I've used Hyper-V before and its pretty much garbage compared to VirtualBox and VMWare. 1. There is no usb device support that I could find, and you can't add any devices besides hard disks that I've seen 2. No shared folders at all, you need to use smb to have any file sharing capability, short of setting up ftp 3. They pretty much only support virtualized windows 2008, they have SOME Linux support but thats limited to Red Hat and OpenSuse mostly 4. You can only install it on Windows Server 2008(well thats a given but its still a drawback) 5. Its interface isn't the best, I find it really hard to find stuff and everything is in non-obvious locations

aceofspades19··on Why are so many people in their 20s taking so long to grow up?
So thats why you make legal age something sane so people who are currently "minors" but are actually 18(or whatever age is best) can move out and grow up. I mean really, people in British Columbia, who are 18, can be charged as an adult and can enter the military but they can't get a credit card? I don't know what the situation is like in other areas, but in BC, at least, its insane!
aceofspades19··on Why are so many people in their 20s taking so long to grow up?
It seems to me that its largely due to the fact that our society doesn't let you do anything until you are 18, sometimes 19. For example, when my parents were teenagers, you could get your full drivers license at 16, now in British Columbia, you get your learners license at 16, your 'N' at 17 and you don't get your full drivers license until you are 19.

Also in British Columbia, you can't rent an apartment without someone signing for it until you are 19. So its hard for someone to grow up until they are in their late 20s because they are used to society protecting them until such a late age and then when it is time for them to move out etc. they don't know what to do with themselves because they haven't been able to learn what to do when they are on their own.

So if our society wasn't so over-protective, people would be growing up faster, but instead we are treating them like children until they are almost 20.

aceofspades19··on Ubuntu's Encrypted Home Directory: A Canonical Approach to Data Privacy
I saw that they used apt to install it, so I would imagine that it doesn't have it installed by default. Also not all livecds would have it so you would have to depend on the ubuntu livecd
aceofspades19··on Ubuntu's Encrypted Home Directory: A Canonical Approach to Data Privacy
Another gotcha would be that it would be difficult to rescue since the ubuntu livecd doesn't have that app by default and I don't know of any livecds that do
aceofspades19··on Guido's Proposal: Moratorium on Python language changes
Well, in other implementations like jython and iron python, the GIL doesn't exist, so I think most people would consider it just an implementation detail
