accountofme··on I'm a flight attendant for Lufthansa – we’re on the verge of collapse
Alan Joyce did say on business TV channels that cancellations of flights was a move to boost flight prices BTW [1].

Which is also a bit "richer" with what you outlined at the end. My personal opinion is that Qantas is also doing it tough operationally. Airlines have a lot of rules in regards to how long crew can operate with out a break. And they must follow them [2].

[1] Seen as a segment on The Gruen on the ABC (Australia). [2] Used to work for a company that wrote solvers for crew rosters years ago.

accountofme··on Hollywood doesn’t make movies like ‘The Fugitive’ anymore (2018)
A note here: The Bourne Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum are based in books (which have a better, richer and kinda different story when compared to the movies ).

I would reccomend having a look at them.

accountofme··on Glances – An Eye on Your System
Really cool project! Trying this out today!

accountofme··on A Google engineer who thinks the company’s AI has come to life
you know what...i am amazed that noone picks up that we have a planet scale network that could be exactly that (conscious)! The internet! we all send packets of information to various systems that then amplify thst data to other neurons... (us humans and our computers are the neurons in this situation)...

Edit: spelling grammar

accountofme··on Tell HN: My wife was banned from WhatsApp without reason or recourse
Funnily enough we do have those laws for the old.telephone service we used to all use (in aus). Sadly the internet was classed differently and avoids all that regulation...
accountofme··on Rust without the async (hard) part
I've been calling it cancer, but I get down voted for that.
accountofme··on Tell HN: I used the same computer since 2007 (with minor upgrades)
Yeah, I would get that battery replaced... if it ruptures, that's a metal-air fire that you do not want your parents to deal with....
accountofme··on Rust Is Hard, Or: The Misery of Mainstream Programming
You might be right on this. I have written a lot of rust and a fair bit of network code, but I never went near async. I'm not exactly sure what my problem with it is, but I started writing rust before async was a thing and always felt more comfortable with finite state machines and polling for network code (I guess I am atypical).

Anyway, I am sorry that you have to use async.

accountofme··on Rust Is Hard, Or: The Misery of Mainstream Programming
Fearless concurrency in respect to threading .... Not async
accountofme··on Show HN: DataStation – App to easily query, script, and visualize data
hi ya,

Interesting idea. I like the ability to pull multiple datasets together. The one thing they I am curious about is visualisation ... What graphing abilities doqs this app have?

accountofme··on Embracing Modern C++ Safely, Book Review
I was going to write a diatribe on rusts great features, but I don't have time.

Please go try rust, not for its memory safety but for all of its other qualities that make it better than c++ in my book.

accountofme··on The great junk transfer is coming
Now I see it. I misead.
accountofme··on History of 127/8 as localhost/loopback addresses (2021)
That is true, there are people who use an ISP modem/router but what of the ones who don't, what of the android TV or phone is that doesn't get updates, what of that winxp/vista/7 computer that won't be upgraded.......?

There are so many other devices out there that are required for this change to work, it is insane to think it could be done.

accountofme··on The great junk transfer is coming
Yes but boomers were born after World war 2 (1945) ... The great depression was 1929 - 1939... Before WW2.
accountofme··on History of 127/8 as localhost/loopback addresses (2021)
I used to work tech support for an ISP years ago.... Trying to get people to find their modem and see if it was plugged into the wall was effort.

Imagine trying to get the same people to upgrade router firmware...... no chance

accountofme··on The great junk transfer is coming
I'm just curious how boomers lived through the great depression.....
accountofme··on Advice for Overcoming Writer’s Block (2016)
For them I guess ...
accountofme··on Midnight Trains – A Hotel on Rails
To be honest, I like the idea. I have used night trains in Europe before and they are a great way to travel and save a day when on holiday.

The one thing they really need. To get right is the bed needs cannot be perpendicular to the direction of motion. That sucks.

accountofme··on Advice for Overcoming Writer’s Block (2016)
Yeah, IIRC the show runners were contracted to do a star wars movie... They wanted to wrap up GoT and move on to that.

Sadly, I think their failure to finish GoT properly screwed their star wars movie ambition too....

Edit: spelling

accountofme··on OpenAI Codex Python to C++ Code Generator
Haha you are right there! That does make it a whole bundle of fun :)
accountofme··on OpenAI Codex Python to C++ Code Generator
I am happy for you.

I once liked c++ but after years of writing it professionally. I am done.

You have to fight c++ to get things working which obfuscates problems in the code. Safety comes from simplicity -- c++ is never simple.

I could rant about this for hours. But in my opinion rust is a better language and the one we as software engineers should get behind for safe systems.

C++ is old and needs to be retired.

accountofme··on OpenAI Codex Python to C++ Code Generator
Interesting idea.... I wonder if the same could be done for c/c++ -> rust :D
accountofme··on Ask HN: Why are people in real life so different?
The difference is danger. The internet, when you are safe and sound in your home saying what ever shit you want with close to zero chance of getting punched in the face for it. Talking to someone on the street is different, you mouth off and there is a high chance you will get beaten, thus we are more polite.

This is 2 dogs interacting but my thoughts are that it is similiar. In this metaphore the internet is the gate.

accountofme··on One of Norway's biggest CS players tries playing under a female alias [video]
That is human nature though. We deny things we know are true if we feel guilty. It is easier to attack that admit.

Sadly we are still at the whims of evolution.

We are all sadly not as evolved as we think we are and more importantly we do not see how our social dynamics rely on certian algorithms.

(this is all my own conjecture based on ny experience in life)

accountofme··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
depends on your beard hair, mine can blunt a razor after 1/2 of my face... I stopped using razors about 10 years ago, not just trim to stubble... shaving sucks
accountofme··on Mechanical Watch
Absolutely the best use of web tech I have seen. The best way to put it, is magic.

Great great great work!!!

accountofme··on Ask HN: My house just got hit by lightning and it fried the PSU in my computer
Please elaborate on why.
accountofme··on Ask HN: My house just got hit by lightning and it fried the PSU in my computer
It all depends on the what is the shortest path to ground.

Ground is also a relative term for a lightning strike.

When lightning hits the ground, a potential field emanates from that point. The further out the closer to 0V the potential difference is.

As such it depends on where the strike is in comparison to the house, your wiring, where your house is grounded etc.

For example, if the grounding point on your house is very close to the strike, your house ground will be raised to the voltage of that point away from the stike.

The path to 0V may be through your active wiring, your powesupply, the house frame or the water pipes.

So yeah, hope that helps

accountofme··on Ask HN: My house just got hit by lightning and it fried the PSU in my computer
It could if it was still part of the lowest resistance path to ground. Electricity is like water, it wants to flow from high potential difference to low potential difference.

Lightning (as far as I know) does not have consciousness and is not out to get your computer!

The parent post was talking about putting a automatic switch in between the power supply to the house (ground active neutral) and switching it off when lightning struck, the problem there is that the switch will not do much if the lightning air gaps around it.
