acconrad··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2021)
Indigo Ag | Senior engineers, Senior PMs | Boston, MA | Full-time | REMOTE OK | https://www.indigoag.com/join-us

================

Want to write code to fight climate change?

That's why I joined - you can read the rest but that seems to be the main reason folks from HN want to learn more.

We're fighting climate change by building better apps for farmers and the agricultural economy. If I didn't believe this was one of the most important problems of our generation I wouldn't put so much emphasis on this.

If you want a mission you can tell your grandchildren about, we're working on it right here, right now.

Our stack is JavaScript/React and Python/Flask.

For reference, we're a Unicorn:

https://www.builtinboston.com/2020/08/03/indigo-ag-raises-36...

We work on agtech, the most underhyped sector in startups:

http://stateofstartups.firstround.com/2018/#trends-and-takes

We've been a CNBC Disruptor in the top 20 for 3 years in a row:

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/25/indigo-ag-disruptor-50.html

I'd love to hear from you. Yeah you could apply online but I'd actually like to chat so send me a message at aconrad[at]indigoag[dot]com and I'll tell you more about the opportunities we have.

acconrad··on What's the most profitable programming hobby?
Consulting your programming knowledge out is a very high ROI per hour (more so than coding).

Some people build plugins for ecosystems like Wordpress and that's pretty profitable.

I have a Slack marketplace app that is ramen profitable.

Write code to solve a problem and charge for it is probably the best way to monetize your programming hobby.

acconrad··on Working at a startup is overrated, both financially and emotionally
So where do startups go from here?

I feel like all I hear about is how bad it is and FAANG is now the ideal. A crazy thought for a forum whose parent company’s sole income is generated by creating and funding new startups.

So what are we going to do about it?

acconrad··on Working at a startup is overrated, both financially and emotionally
So what is the solution for startups now?

I’ve worked the whole gamut from FAANG to 1st employee (and founder of a side project startup) and I just don’t know how they compete anymore.

We need innovation and new companies.

But for my own side project I can’t imagine hiring someone. I either are hiring if we become wildly successful or we just get acquired with our founding team and still make an outsized outcome.

It’s a grim outlook for startups but we need them

acconrad··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
So if i already have duct work from an old AC I can use that duct work for something like this Mitsubishi Zuba?
acconrad··on Ask HN: Are you satisfied with Elixir or do you regret choosing Elixir?
I run GetToKnow (https://gettoknowapp.com) on Elixir.

It costs me $50/mo total (app + DB) and I can easily support 20k users across 250 organizations (some of whom are paid).

I'm basically ramen profitable overnight and my overhead is incredibly low. It's essentially pure profit.

With Ruby/Rails this would be at least x4 the cost.

I usually post this long thing about why we're a great company to work for and I realized that nothing compared to mission and purpose. You can read our accolades and I'll reference them below, but the truth is nothing matters more than why we exist:

We're fighting climate change by building better apps for farmers and the agricultural economy. Our farmers are able to produce better quality crops with fewer resources and less land. For example, we piloted a program with Anheiser-Busch and saved 2 BILLION gallons of water in the last year.

If I didn't believe this was one of the most important problems of our generation to help future generations, I wouldn't put so much emphasis on this. If you want a mission you can tell your grandchildren about in hopes of creating a better environment for farmers (and really the whole world), we're working on it right here, right now.

Before grokking this article my initial thought was "everyone today seems to use hash tables or dictionaries". Dicts are everywhere in Python and Objects are the hash table used within JavaScript.

I read the whole Algorithm Design Manual[1] and it can be a bit dry so I'm actually very excited to read Grokking Algorithms to see if it will indeed be helpful for professional developers to ace their ds/algo exams.

acconrad··on Practicing empathy can teach us the value of diversity and inclusion in tech
Look at meetups, social groups, conferences that serve underrepresented communities (both locally and nationally).

You should be looking because diversity of experience and opinion helps you build a more well-rounded product that your users can empathize with. Alternative and comprehensive perspectives will only help your group thrive and expand their reach as well as build a sense of community and culture on your teams.

acconrad··on Practicing empathy can teach us the value of diversity and inclusion in tech
One way you can improve diversity in your workforce is to actively seek out underrepresented communities when you are hiring.

You can't control who is applying to your job postings, but you can control who you reach out to to fill those positions.

If you can find people who don't fit the white male programmer mold and let them know about the jobs you have available, you're making the choice to prioritize diversity and inclusion in your teams.

acconrad··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
Now that everyone is working remotely, it's much harder to get to know your teammates. I built https://gettoknowapp.com as a Slack bot extension that sends you 1 question every M/W/F and posts it to a dedicated #answers channel. The whole app is contained within Slack - you can view people's past answers, upvote/like them, and the real fun is just seeing what your friends/coworkers had to say that you didn't expect about their answers.

I had used apps like Donut before and they felt oddly pushy and impersonal; you join a room and Donut will randomly select people to chat. Have you ever been in one of those arrangements? Extremely awkward openers. I wanted the questions to serve as a fun icebreaker to help people naturally discover interests together.

Oh and of course the tech. It's all built on Elixir. I run one web server and one database server and that's it. I already have about 100 communities spanning about 4000 people so in terms of message/event processing it is completely seamless...one of my favorite things about Elixir. Most interactions are processed in measure of microseconds rather than milliseconds. This makes for a real-time experience in Slack and is such a joy to work with. I also contribute to the Elixir-Slack open source project which has been fun working with as well.

I hope to incorporate more user feedback as it grows but so far it's been a great tool for teams in lockdown as they ramp up new people and want to quickly build them into their teams' culture.

================

I'd love to hear from you and learn more about how you can work with us. Our stack is JavaScript (React & Apollo front end, some Node on back end) and Python (Flask for the back end).

For reference, we're a Unicorn company:

We work on the most under-hyped sector in startups today (agtech) 2 years in a row:

CNBC named us the Most Disruptive Company in the world, beating out Flexport, Airbnb, and other companies you've seen here on HN:

And our big climate goal is to use regenerative agriculture to sequester 1 TRILLION tons of carbon from the atmosphere:

acconrad··on Manager's Playbook: Heuristics for effective management
This is a great resource! More of a reference / bulleted list rather than a playbook. I wrote something similar for my new front-line managers who were playing with the idea of transitioning from IC to management[1].

The big things really are all about 1-1s, feedback, coaching, and delegation. From everyone I've talked to the hardest part is the delegation piece. It's so easy to fall back on our original skills as developers. And yet, it's more important than ever to delegate those responsibilities whenever possible
