abujazar··on Turning SQLite into a Distributed Database
But why?
abujazar··on American Airlines agrees to purchase Boom Supersonic Overture aircraft
You mean couch class? https://boomsupersonic.com/static/images/overture-experience...
abujazar··on Manticore Search: Elasticsearch Alternative
Meilisearch is nice for tiny indexes, but it’s extremely slow at indexing and it’s not really comparable to elastic or manticore when it comes to larger datasets and requirements beyond the most basic use cases.
abujazar··on SearchHut
Elastic App Search would be well suited for something like that. It comes with a built in crawler.
abujazar··on Teams is killing my Mac every day
It «works», but still takes up a lot of resources (gigabytes of RAM and a whole CPU core while in video meetings),and depending on sso policies might require you to sign in several times a day. It’s also limited to four video streams.
abujazar··on A lightning bolt would be worth only about a nickel (2015)
And this is why Nikola Tesla died poor.
abujazar··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
I find even the iPhone 12 mini way too large. The iPhone 4 form factor was perfect.
abujazar··on [dead]
Most of these flags seem to have wrong proportions, a lot of those I checked also have wrong colors and some of the flags have other serious mistakes. So unfortunately this library seems quite useless.
abujazar··on UUIDs are popular, but bad for performance (2019)
The author seems to have forgotten the obvious alternative of using ints for database primary keys and uuids externally.
abujazar··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
That’s not precise. Gross income after deductions and taxes paid is public information, salary is not.
abujazar··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
@nostrebored Well, Hetzner never went down for the 7 years I managed a HA setup spanning three of their data centers. One of the DCs was unavailable for a few hours during a planned moving op, but we had no outages. None.
abujazar··on Ask HN: Which tech stack is the most fun?
UI components were removed from the framework and made optional with Laravel 6 in 2019.
abujazar··on Floating point numbers, and why they suck
Floating point arithmetic doesn't «suck», it's the code that treats floats as decimal numbers that sucks.
abujazar··on RFC for 700 HTTP Status Codes (2012)
«Relied On A Cloud Provider For Redundance» is missing. Typically misclassified as 503, but really belongs in 77x
abujazar··on RFC for 700 HTTP Status Codes (2012)
787 should be Plane Crash
abujazar··on Facebook Down?
Perhaps they had to patch some critical vulnerability like the one that exposed 533M personal records and did the right thing by pressing the red button™
abujazar··on Facebook Down?
Yea
abujazar··on The Norway Problem
Norwegian here. I’d say the problem is YAML, not Norway :D
abujazar··on Svalbard's Alcohol Quotas
Norwegian here. The reason for the quotas is historical and were put in place to limit miners' consumption of beer and liquor. Interestingly there's practically no quota on wine, presumably because miners didn't care much for that.

You can't buy wine and liquor at local stores in Norway Svalbard, but there is a great selection in the state run monopoly stores (Vinmonopolet). In Longyearbyen there's one called Nordpolet (The North Pole, a pun on "pol" meaning both pole and being an abbrevation for monopoly).

abujazar··on PHP in 2020
You could just run your app in a container.
abujazar··on Pros and cons of different ways of storing Enum values in the database
How about storing enum values as... enum values in the database?
abujazar··on Thoughts on Cocoa
They probably should’ve started porting their app to web tech 10-15 years ago rather than ranting about progress in native frameworks.
abujazar··on Oldest Viable Laptop (2017)
Hey, did anyone hear about Spectre?
