absurdo··on Guess I'm a rationalist now
What kind of commentary here have you heard here around the Rust community? I haven’t heard much. Certainly nothing close to violent. I’ve heard lots of shit talking regarding Go because they refused to introduce generics - and to be fair, the reasoning behind the refusal was smug arrogance led by the pompous cock rpike.

I will say as someone who has been programming before we had standardized C++ that “programming communities” aren’t my cup of tea. I like the passion and enthusiasm but it would be good for some of those lads to have a drag, see a shrink and get some nookie.

What the fuck am I reading lmao.
absurdo··on The Scouring of the Shire
Good lord how melodramatic.

The people who signed - you’re going to return the money that you made from Palantir, the real estate and stocks you bought to go along with it.

Right?

Right. Thought so.

absurdo··on The magic of through running
I foresee in the near future, in addition to the archive.is link (which is not needed here thankfully), a summary.is link will be present (which is needed here unfortunately).

It’s an okay article but there’s no real magic to it. It amounts to wordy trivia and you spend your time reading it as I have at your peril. Zero-calorie content is easily forgotten.

absurdo··on George Orwell's 1984 and How Power Manufactures Truth
Megadeth covered this in practically one stanza: “peace sells, but who’s buying?”

We keep doing somersaults over dead writers lengthy works when it’s the simple shit in front of our eyes. Including the festering pile of shit HN has become because of dang’s bullshit.

Don’t need Trump or Putin or Mao or Bibi or any other high powered asshole. The ones we have here are more than enough, and they’re no different than these high and mighty pricks.

absurdo··on I Miss the Internet (2024)
Speaking of activism, the No Kings protest thing was incredibly performative with very little substance, and certainly no change. Just a handful of dead people.

No links to Baumgartner from HN yet? Strange.
absurdo··on The fastest way to detect a vowel in a string
Waiting for a few follow-ups:

“What every programmer should know about vowels”

“You and your vowels”

“What the vowels have wrought”

“We’re hiring! Vowels (YC 26)”

And last but not least:

“Things I Won’t Work With: Vowels”

Same. I encourage this, in fact.
absurdo··on Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express
> As I’ve written before, there are few institutions, or people, with a higher approval rating than Dolly Parton. While I love her for her music and the feeling of joy she gives us, I also love that Dollywood Express, the heritage steam train that operates within Dollywood, has a higher rail ridership than 27 states.

Oh I’d ride that, alright!

Some time later on HN front page:

> Why I left FB,GOOG,Whatever

>> Author describes seemingly abhorrently unethical and immoral practices they were completely ignorant of, occurring right in front of them that they were a key participant in.

>> Accepted a massive salary to be ignorant.

>> Shocked as all fuck about ethics and implications.

>> Returned 0 money, cashed out.

>> 100% ethical now.

absurdo··on MDMA for narcissism? 5 Questions for psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Alexa Albert
This is a culture of a country that encourages rampant drug use as a solution to all sorts of problems. It does not surprise me they want to fix deep seated childhood trauma issues by putting someone on molly.

It’s ridiculous. If there was a “drug war” it’s been lost, and big pharma won by a landslide.

absurdo··on MDMA for narcissism? 5 Questions for psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Alexa Albert
A few things that jump out:

1) This over all seems like an advertisement piece wrapped up as an FAQ.

2) The definition of narcissism here is so loose and encompassing so many things it makes me wonder if these people can actually distinguish various pathologies. I’d opt to re-categorize especially because terms like narcissism, empathy, psychopath etc are in vogue but given their definitions it’s a day that ends with ‘y’.

3) I’d like to sincerely know the scientific backing of the education that these positions hold, in particular because while I’m okay with a certain level of hypothesizing, getting people hooked on drugs because it can cure anything from grandiosity to childhood neglect is not something I’m ready to accept at face value. I want to see how do they determine conditions, origins, and treatments.

absurdo··on The child-like role of dogs in Western societies
Why would someone go out of their way to make r/petfree to demonize pet owners is beyond me. But hey, that’s the internet nowadays I guess. Rage fueled machine.
absurdo··on The child-like role of dogs in Western societies

absurdo··on AI Angst

absurdo··on The Child-Like Role of Dogs in Western Societies
I avoided going into all the myriad of things that pets are good for because it’s not the point. I grew up with a small backyard graveyard of all the pets I’ve had over the years, some given some adopted some stray, so I’m very far from anti-pet.

What I’m really poking at here in the joke behind the rant sort of way is a suspicion, a conspiracy by nature to suppress our reproduction capabilities by slowly not only making us infertile in greater numbers, but steering us towards adopting pets instead of humans as a prank, to make us see the animals we are in an animal kingdom.

absurdo··on Ex-FCC Chair Ajit Pai is now a wireless lobbyist
As valid of a point as it may be, it’s absolutely trite in this context. You can infer and separate degrees of politics from hackers-as-hackers. Piling on Trump has zero utility to hackers. Think about it for a moment.
absurdo··on AI Angst
C-can we get an open source of this?
