abstractbarista··on The Most Dangerous Censorship
Same here. Better to go covert. I've shifted over the years to maintaining a few close friends, with which you can candidly exchange.
abstractbarista··on Renting Is Cheaper Than Buying in All 50 Major Metro Areas in the United States
I guess based on averages, this can be true. For Raleigh, NC they list the rent ~$1100 and mortgage ~$1500.

I have a 15yr fixed mortgage at 2.75% which I started with 20% down to avoid PMI. All-in (HOA, utilities, principle, interest, insurance, maintenance) I am paying ~$1200. And that's to live by myself, in a two-story, 1400sq.ft. townhome. We have a lovely community pool too.

There is no way I could pay that little renting a place with equivalent offerings. If I picked up a roommate or two? Sure, but that's not something I'm willing to compromise on. Keep in mind I have a more aggressive 15yr mortgage. The difference would be even wider in monthly cost for a 30yr.

abstractbarista··on Irish police to be given powers over passwords
It's better to live life in prison for not giving up a password, than to be convicted of whatever they might find. (Not all will agree with this mentality, and that's fine.)
abstractbarista··on Chrome abandons 'simplified domain experiment' in omnibar
This is fantastic, how did I not know about this before!
abstractbarista··on Drug users use a lot of drugs
Just have to say, a half gram dab is a fat dab. I'm sure some people do vaporize all of that at once. However, even with complete inhalation and 'swishing' it in their lungs, they will be wasting a lot of it on the exhale.
abstractbarista··on ProPublica's tax story
To me this read like "avoiding taxation" == "refusing to realize significant proportions of one's gains". I don't see anything wrong with that. We all do it (if we aspire to financial independence).
abstractbarista··on IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax
How do they pay back those loans? I've never understood that part.
abstractbarista··on IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax
I think that's good and correct. The inheritor hasn't had any capital gain. Because the deceased never sold, they didn't either.
abstractbarista··on Tabula – Extract tables from PDF files
Hey I've used this at work! Love it. Pdfplumber is very useful too. Although these tools are only useful when the text in a PDF is "selectable". If someone scans a document to PDF, there may be no text in the file for these tools to extract.
abstractbarista··on How college became a ruthless competition divorced from learning
Working with these people in college was rather frustrating at times. I always did good work, started working on projects early and often. Because I knew programming a solution is sort of an unknown until you really dive in to it. Many students got better grades than they deserved because I was in their group. They were great people, just horrible team mates.
abstractbarista··on Liberalizing Land Use Regulations: The Case of Houston (2020)
I'd be fine with paying a tax "on the gains that the rest of society generated for you" upon me selling that land to someone else.

Just like capital gains on equities. I don't pay until I realize. I'm happy to pay some property tax in the meantime to keep gov't services running in the area.

But any other method is terrifying to me and makes me start thinking "What super rural state can I move to in retirement to buy a nice parcel and be seriously left alone these days?"

abstractbarista··on I need to explain to you just how dire America's Pokémon card crisis is
This is why I've been buying equities as fast as I can since I started working. Only been a few years but I'm loving it so far.
abstractbarista··on So I finally sorted out what happened to my brain
Sounds like they were binging stimulants to get their work done. The brain needs regular sleep or you burn out hard. Nothing inherently wrong with drug use, but it must be done with compassion for your body.
abstractbarista··on FDA Moves to Ban All Menthol Cigarettes and Flavored Cigars
Hopefully they all switch to vaping. I'm excited to see the black market solutions to this as well.
abstractbarista··on Cheerleader’s Snapchat rant leads to ‘momentous’ Supreme Court case on speech
Reading this gave me flashbacks to high school. This is very sad but true. While I typically kept to myself and avoided their wrath, certain members of the administration were just horrible, and I could clearly see the mental toll it took on fellow students.
abstractbarista··on The Flu Vanished During Covid. What Will Its Return Look Like?
I just hope all the people who "don't get the flu vaccine because they never get the flu" will actually start getting vaccinated.

To those people, odds are you don't get the flu because enough people around you did get vaccinated. And also, you're just getting lucky. You may have a better immune system than average, but you are not immune.

In 2018, the CDC says >490k were hospitalized and >34k died from the flu. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2018-2019.html

It's a serious matter, yet people just brushed it off and came in to work/school sick as a dog. Heck, I remember having to do this with colds in elementary school... It was either: I show up horribly sick, or my grades must suffer. (No, there was no way out of it. Simply punish those trying to protect their community from themselves. Zero tolerance for real life.)

abstractbarista··on The US electric power sector is halfway to zero carbon emissions
Some people seem dead-set on expecting failure, but I've always been optimistic that market forces will shift towards renewables and mass storage as their costs and efficacy improve.

It feels amazing to be proven right. When you continually refine a class of technologies like these, 'the market' latches on and fervently optimizes. We are all part of this movement. It will only accelerate from here; my first car was a hybrid, and my next will be battery electric. There are many like me in my generation.

Of course, governments across the nation have taken many great steps to incentivize as well. But why does it feel like everyone has abandoned these fundamental concepts? I suppose it is preferred to narrate market changes with political tones these days.

abstractbarista··on Reuters website goes behind paywall in new strategy
Guess I won't be reading much Reuters any more. Just the way she goes, if it doesn't load easily for me, I back out and move on to something else.
abstractbarista··on We Discovered Google’s Social Justice Blocklist for YouTube Ad Placements
All I want is equality; either block both, or block neither. As a user, I can guarantee I hate all ads equally, but also put up with all equally, because I'm too cheap to pay.
abstractbarista··on Signal adds a payments feature with a privacy-focused cryptocurrency
The proper choice would have been Monero.
abstractbarista··on Apple's Cooperation with Authoritarian Governments
I'm really happy to not own any Apple products. They cost too much while simultaneously limiting what I can do.

I am happy they are popular, because I own stock in them. Other than that, they clearly have near zero patriotic morals.

abstractbarista··on Giant Ship Is Moved To and Fro to Break Suction: Suez Update
It is? Yikes. If there's a paywall, I just end up reading the comments and never the article. Oh well.
abstractbarista··on 20-Minute Neighborhoods
There's a certain city in central NC that I generally avoid because of this aspect. Every time I've visited friends there, I was asked for money in a confrontational manner. Every time I've left my car, it seemed reasonable to expect vandalism or a break-in upon returning. (I'm not a flashy person. I drive a 12 year old Civic. I keep nothing valuable in the cabin. I keep to myself.)

After a few of these negative interactions, I decided to generally avoid visiting ever again. It's not that I have a problem dealing with it: It's very easy to say no, or to run if needed. It's that I simply shouldn't have to deal with this BS in the first place! Please, just leave me alone! I'm leaving you alone.

In places like this, I lock the doors upon entering the car. Depending on location, I also keep the engine running, in case the car must be used in an evasive or defensive manner. (People have tried my door handles while stopped at lights, so the car is set to lock when driving too.) Be aware of your surroundings, and casually pay attention to how people are watching you.

I am very glad to live in a different nearby city, in a more sprawling area, that has much less of this activity. Due to the sprawl, it is not nearly as economically motivating for trolls to congregate.

abstractbarista··on America’s bald eagle population continues to soar
Wow, this is great to hear! I'm in North Carolina, and we have a beautiful (man-made) lake called Jordan Lake where the eagles can be frequently seen. I've been out on boats before and watched them grab fish out of the water. Then you see them fly up to a nest and chill. :) It's truly amazing.
abstractbarista··on Over twenty subreddits have gone private

abstractbarista··on Mouse plague grows to biblical proportions across eastern Australia

abstractbarista··on All 5000 Images in Beeple’s $69M Magnum Opus:What I Found Isn’t So Pretty
These are hilarious!
abstractbarista··on Cracking of encrypted messaging service dealt major blow to organised crime

abstractbarista··on UK businesses caught buying five-star Google reviews
"In American courts, the burden of proof rests with the person who brings a claim of libel. In British courts, the author or journalist has the burden of proof, and typically loses."

abstractbarista··on Israel’s lucrative and secretive cybersurveillance industry
I used to believe there should be a Palestine and an Israel. But, they both want something that they are totally unwilling to share with the other. Furthermore, one has technologically and culturally dominated the other.

Thus, it's time to give up. Israel has won.
