absove··on First genetically modified mosquitoes released in the United States
> Countless species are already going extinct all the time, both known to us and completely unknown to us, and both "naturally" and from human impact, and no one really cares.

Many people care, only those that have financial gain to make from this state of affair choose to ignore it.

absove··on Fedora Linux 34 is officially here
Any opinion on the move to BTRFS as the default filesystem? Would it be a transparent change for the user? Obviously it will only apply to fresh installs.
absove··on Nuclear power looks to regain its footing 10 years after Fukushima
The civilization in decline is the one that destroys the environment in order to build spaceships.

Not that so-called renewables will actually solve that, cutting energy usage on the other hand definitely would help.

absove··on On the Graying of Gnome
If you don't mind pulling a bunch of cinnamon dependencies along with it, you can use nemo (the cinnamon file manager) as a nautilus replacement in gnome. The search behavior you mentioned in particular is very annoying with nautilus.
absove··on Microsoft submits Linux kernel patches to enable complete Hyper-V on Linux
I don't think this attitude is the reason why Microsoft won't port the Office suite to linux.
absove··on Show HN: Beekeeper Studio – open-source, cross-platform SQL client
As far as I can tell IntelliJ Ultimate (and therefore most likely DataGrip too) supports both. For parameterized queries you get a prompt that let you fill in values for each parameter when executing them. They're commercial products though.
absove··on US begins withdrawal from Paris climate accord
> Another example of technology making the world better.

Surely this is sarcasm?

absove··on Why Open Source Misses the Point of Free Software (2016)
permissive free software licenses like BSD are still free software. The comment you were replying to mentions proprietary open source which is another thing.
absove··on Completely Silent Computer
I got mine last week, pleasantly surprised at how good it was considering the price. The display is gorgeous and linux support is excellent. Far from usual experience with linux on laptops.
absove··on Downloaded my Facebook data and it has the call history with my partner’s mother
Could it be people who searched for you before you made your account? I've noticed something similar with a handful of people but always assumed they were people who searched for my name and couldn't find me at the time, so their search was put on hold until an account with the corresponding was created.
absove··on Avoid getters and setters whenever possible
My favorite is immutables (https://immutables.github.io/). It's really frictionless and at this point it feels like an extension of the language to me. It also lets you fall back to mutable types when you need them, despite the name.
absove··on How GDPR Will Change The Way You Develop
Why was this downvoted? Is it wrong?
absove··on Firefox 57.0 Released
Greasemonkey will be updated from legacy to the compatible one automatically, no user intervention needed. I assume this holds true for all such extensions.
absove··on Ask HN: Have you successfully moved away from Google search?
I've been using Startpage for a couple of years now. I'm happy with the search results.
absove··on The future of MDN: a focus on web docs
In firefox you can also add it as an alternative search engine.
absove··on Underscore's Scala books are now open source
I'm curious how up to date those books are with the latest version of Play/Slick, given how fast conventions move in those projects. The Play book seems to be from 2015, that sounds quite outdated.
absove··on Disable Your Antivirus Software (Except Microsoft's)
Windows already has full control over your system.
absove··on Opera is Reborn
>It's that the Chinese government have ways of getting into even resisting companies at their whim that are judged alright in completely different ways than in Norwegian law.

So, just like the US government?

absove··on Ask HN: What laptop do you use?
The XPS 13 looks like the perfect machine for me but all these coil whine reports scared me away from it. Then I found out a friend of mine bought one (the XPS 15 though), and when I asked him about it he said he never noticed anything. I really can't tell if it's only on some machines or if most people simply don't notice/don't care.
absove··on Rust required to build Gecko
In my opinion good practices being enforced by the language/compiler is even more beneficial for beginners than it is for experienced programmers, especially because in C it's up to the student to figure these out by himself. Or with the teaching material, but if we can offload that to the compiler, why not?
