abpavel··on Like modern democracies, ancient Greek democracy had an anger problem
Sometimes, it seems, even a step behind.
abpavel··on A new kind of map: it’s about time
In .. 7 .. minutes you wi reach your deatination .. in shady alley behind the dumpster. But hey, it's close!

Cool idea though.

abpavel··on Automotive Grade Linux Platform Debuts on the 2018 Toyota Camry
Headphones in a car is generally a bad idea, as you wouldn't hear car horns, sirens, and other important audible signals that might prove critical.
abpavel··on Court OKs child porn prosecution of minors distributing pictures of themselves
> No victim means no crime

This isn't true in the least. Jaywalking and speeding can be done in a world with "population: 1", yet caught on camera would constitute a crime.

abpavel··on A Social Network That Costs 10¢ to Post
If you click "New" at the parent site, you'll see that essentially it' micro-Patreon/Kickstarter full of beggars and spam that baits you to click "read more" to earn that 10c.
abpavel··on As Amazon Pushes Forward with Robots, Workers Find New Roles
But isn't it simply a misconception? The 10yr statistics doesn't support your argument: https://tradingeconomics.com/germany/unemployment-rate

As an employer, I find it extremely hard to find qualified people, and my entrepreneur friends are having even harder times, with people showing up for their first day of work either drunk, or not at all.

abpavel··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
This is unreal... How is this any different than procedures in North Kore or Burma? I don't care if I'll lose 10 points for this comment. I just feel sad that such a great place as SV is located in a country on a level of Burma, if you travel just 500 miles east.
abpavel··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
How? Why? What? Are you serious? This doesn't sound reasonable in the least.
abpavel··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
Why is this downvoted? Sounds like a really fucked up place.
abpavel··on Build Tesla-like touch screen car computer using a Raspberry Pi 3
"Ordered" or "invested in the idea"? It is definitely nice-looking, but I had only 1 in 4 items arriving from my Kickstarter "orders".
abpavel··on Attacked by Rotten Tomatoes
> "Sony set a review embargo of opening day for “The Emoji Movie,” which left the Tomatometer blank until after many advance tickets had been sold and families had made weekend plans."

So studios do know that the movie sucks in advance, but still blame RT for poor performance? I don't see them putting an embargo on Spider-Man...

abpavel··on Capitalizing on hurricanes Irma and Harvey: $6,785 for an economy seat
Then isn't it a proof that the economic theory doesn't work in practice? We're talking two economy seats paying the price to charter the whole jet: https://www.privatefly.com/us/private-jets/large-airliner-hi...
abpavel··on Why the long-term future of humanity matters more than anything else
Define "stop". Like VHEMT? On a not more serious note, most people on this planet do not drive cars. 947M registered passenger cars for 7350M people in 2015 is 12.8%.
abpavel··on Cancer's invasion equation
In 1983 a girl in an esoteric dress stood in the rain outside the window of an appartment of a man named Why Do All TNY Articles Start Like This.
abpavel··on Divorce and Occupation
This. After a decade of marriage battles I think I'm finally getting a hang of it thanks to this. Saying yes instead of no. Quietly letting something happen instead of arguing for the opposite.
abpavel··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
If you mean temperature, then wind turbines actually increase temperature (friction, inefficiencies...) of locale climate. Solar panels cool the Earth, not turbines.

Wind is a byproduct of solar power. Why not derive energy from the primary source (solar) instead of going for secondary (wind).

Edit: really curious about downvotes. There is nothing in the above that's controversial. I've also provided data below: http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/11/4/044.... "Specifically, we discovered that operational wind turbines raised air temperature by 0.18 °C"

abpavel··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
Yes, I meant the climate formations moving from the north pole, and Himalayas affecting the amount of precipitation reaching North Africa. Can't find that larticular animation at the moment though.
abpavel··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
Nothing is going to grow underneath the solar panels. At least with solar panels you can selectivaly decide where nothing should grow. With roofs it's already an easy decision. With wind paths - not so much.
abpavel··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
Sure, instead of destroying climate indirectly by heating atmosphere, let's destroy it directly by blocking wind paths.

Last time it happened, it created the largest desert in the world - just look at the effect Himalayas had on Sahara.

abpavel··on 24/192 Music Downloads Are Very Silly Indeed (2012)
I wonder how you measure the quality difference for higher rates? 384K, 512K and beyond? I hear from audiophiles that there is a very distinct difference, but there is absolutely no basis for it in science.
abpavel··on 24/192 Music Downloads Are Very Silly Indeed (2012)
Are you the kind of person who considers 24/384 not being good enough? Chasing 384KHz and beyond by buying $1000 USB cable to the DAC?

abpavel··on E-commerce will evolve next month as Amazon loses the 1-Click patent

  > obvious in advance, not obvious in hindsight
Thanks! That's what I was looking for. Many things we take for granted, which are so simple and obvious, are not obvious at all when they don't exist... I remember exactly those experiences everywhere - you have to register to add an item to a shopping card... And yes, you MUST give us your mother's maiden name...
abpavel··on E-commerce will evolve next month as Amazon loses the 1-Click patent

  > madness
Why shouldn't something be patentable, just because it's easy to replicate?
abpavel··on E-commerce will evolve next month as Amazon loses the 1-Click patent
Business process can be considered a technology, i.e. technical procedure. Also, since they got the patent, wouldn't they have to pass tests for previous works, novelty, and obviousness? And, why shouldn't something be patentable, just because it's easy to replicate?

Sounds more like Financial Accounting 101 - generally good indicators, but not really usable for pre-revenue or pivots.
