abnry··on Hacker News Parody Thread (2013)
The real concern is that you can fire 75% of the parody site workers and still have it keep humming.
abnry··on Laika, the space dog, and her one-way trip into orbit (2018)
Cunk on Laika: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AScMTzoDCrk
abnry··on Why mathematicians study knots
The book is also open domain, so anyone interested should look it up.
abnry··on Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification
The article never even says what the "alt-right conspiracy theory" is. Just that it the source is disreputable.
abnry··on “Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with diverse viewpoints”
I think it is unverified, that is the issue.
abnry··on Apparently you cannot have Kanye interview on Google Drive now
Remember to encrypt your backups when uploading to the cloud.

Makes sharing files less convenient however.

abnry··on Remote work may have fueled a baby boom among U.S. women
The attitude some have of a SAH spouse does not make the definition of a SAH spouse.
abnry··on Remote work may have fueled a baby boom among U.S. women
> A SAH spouse is not an equal partner with a 50% contribution. More of an oldest child with extra responsibilities and a higher allowance.

This is a really depressing way of looking at things.

abnry··on Your website should work without JavaScript (2021)
I enjoy browsing with curl and discarding the bodies of http requests. The headers give me all I need.
abnry··on Facts about State Machines
I love this! Although, I don't think it is a simple state diagram.
abnry··on Facts about State Machines
I really struggle with the value of simple state machine diagrams. For example, I get very little out of the Unix process state machine diagram. I've also seen designs involving just two states. What am I missing?
abnry··on Dear Chess World
I want more of this metagaming in chess. That's one of the things I find interesting about Hans. His interviews suggest he's taking a sort of meta game approach. He suggested once a move of his against Alireza was a bluff because Alireza doesn't like attacking chess.
abnry··on Dear Chess World
I am disappointed with Magnus. He is misusing the weight of his reputation even if cheating is a big deal in chess.

The first mistake was still choosing to play when he had reservations once Hans was invited. The second mistake was quitting the tournament and messing up the standings once he lost. The third mistake was making an insinuation through a tweet. The fourth mistake was resigning in two moves his next game with Hans.

Even though Hans is suspicious and untrustworthy, Magnus is taking on himself the authority to be judge, jury and executioner. If he is concerned about cheating being an issue, proactively bring up the issue, don't do it re-actively.

abnry··on Ask HN: I love to be alone. But this loneliness is killing me
For some introverts, at least for myself, they are so inclined to do things by themselves they don't realize they are hungry for social interaction. I knew of a person who had a brain tumor removed and they lost their sense of hunger. They had to remind themselves to eat.

For me, what helps a lot is some sort of habitual or scheduled interaction. Like a weekly thing. That way the decision making process isn't, "do I feel like setting something up with someone else" but just going.

abnry··on [dead]
Surprised that someone is willing to give these loans. What collateral is there other than the idea that future earnings may improve? It sort of is implicit support for the idea that taller men do better.
abnry··on Why people make dumb financial decisions on purpose
You can derive what sort of variance a person will tolerate if they have a "utility function" quantifying the marginal value of each dollar. If you are risk averse (which people usually when they have a small net worth) then your utility curve will be concave. Think like sqrt(x) function.

OTOH, insurance companies can afford to have a roughly linearly utility function (because, as pointed out, they play the game much more often than others), which is why they are in business.

abnry··on My Contribution to Markdown
Yeah, it is self centered, but it is fun.
abnry··on My Contribution to Markdown
You forgot these sentences right before it:

> Undoubtedly, as Markdown became more popular, someone else would have pointed out this problem. Gruber himself would have been annoyed by it if he ever needed to write a code block with backslashes in it.

People are overreacting to a tongue-in-cheek post. I doubt the author takes himself too seriously with all of this.

abnry··on Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience
If you believe them. It is a convenient excuse.
abnry··on The Big [Censored] Theory
Never knew it was a stereotype that Indian males lack confidence with women. It's funny to me when someone's denunciation of a stereotype ends up teaching me about the "stereotype". It has happened to me before.
abnry··on Reading fast, reading well, and reading widely (2020)
This book helped me be okay with not finishing a book. Another way I put it is that the book is there to serve me, not me to serve the book.
abnry··on Habitual GPS use negatively impacts spatial memory during self-guided navigation
I enjoy navigating without gps. I can always memorize most of the way there as it is usually just following main roads. It is the last portion that can be hardest. I like to think of directions in terms of "topological complexity". If it is just off a highway or off of a road off the highway it is easy to navigate to. Has nothing to do with how far away it is or how familiar I am with the area.

Similar to this is the fact that it is always easier to navigate home than to a new place. In the former, you are aiming for the web of roads that you recognize. In the latter, it is a specific point.

abnry··on Pixel Guesser: Test your sense of pixels
Okay, I'll be the first to share my score: NaN, because I couldn't figure out the first few rounds.

Actually got 780.

abnry··on Irishman arrested in UK for 'causing anxiety' by retweeting meme
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
abnry··on Irishman arrested in UK for 'causing anxiety' by retweeting meme
You can dig up examples where the police did do this. I bet that is harder.
abnry··on Irishman arrested in UK for 'causing anxiety' by retweeting meme
You come off as saying the arrest is warranted but in a way so as to suggest you aren't saying so.
abnry··on The strength of the strong force
My understanding is the 1/r^2 behavior comes from solving for Green's function of a PDE. Gravity is similar to Gauss's law (i.e. 1/r^2 behavior of charged particles) in the underlying PDE. So something in that equation would have to change.
abnry··on “Code” 2nd Edition Now Available
I had a very similar experience. I read the book from the library as a kid. I originally thought it was to do with ciphers, as I was into codes then. It introduced me to the programming section of the library, and I expanded to the math section from there. A couple of STEM degrees later and here I am.
abnry··on Taking things less personally
Sheesh, some people are incapable of taking offense at anything and would love to. Don't stigmatize those people who have trouble feeling feelings. ;-)
abnry··on Taking things less personally
But it's only half true. The anxiety over how others' perceive you is perhaps overblown, but you'd discount a whole lot of anxiety as irrational if you say that nobody forms judgments about you.
