abixb··on Computer use, a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku
I wonder why they didn't choose a "point update" scheme, like bumping it up to v3.6, for example. I agree, the naming is super confusing.
abixb··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
What has been -- in your personal experience as well as in the experience of some of your lawyer colleagues -- some of the 'hardest' cases wrt employment authorization for US-based startups and YC? And why?

Also, how are you anticipating the immigration landscape to change especially if President Donald Trump returns to the White House in January 2025? I'm asking this in the context of the 2017-2021 Trump administration's massive clampdown on Specialty Occupation visas through executive orders. [0]

abixb··on Web Browser Engineering (2021)
My thoughts precisely. I wish there was a service that could convert book-length webpages into neatly formatted ePUB document. I did find a 'converter', [0] but the service has tons of room for improvement.

abixb··on DoNotPay has to pay $193K for falsely touting untested AI lawyer, FTC says
Haha, my thoughts precisely. The first 4 words of the title were bewildering for me for a few seconds.
abixb··on AnandTech Farewell
Breaks my heart. Grew up reading AnandTech in the early 2010s for all things hardware -- processor releases, updates to the DDR SDRAM standard, motherboard and NAND flash reviews.

The era of unbiased, objective and deeply technical journalism is dying out. Sad.

abixb··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
>It may put a dent in Microsoft as splash damage.

I have a feeling that Microsoft's PR team will be able to navigate this successfully and Microsoft might even benefit from this incident as it tries to pull customers away from CrowdStrike Falcon and into its own EDR product -- Microsoft Defender for Endpoint.

abixb··on AT&T says criminals stole phone records of 'nearly all' customers in data breach
I hope you didn't sign-up for Signal with an AT&T-tied phone number. Else this breach would've probably exposed your PII either way.
abixb··on Cybersecurity Isn't Special
Seems like a rage-bait title, but I kind of agree with the general premise that cybersecurity teams shouldn't treat themselves as solving unique problems that other auxiliary teams (like SRE/platform engineering) haven't already come across and/or already solved.

I am of the opinion that this massive push by big organizations (coupled with mandates for C-suite roles like CISO) into building a dedicated army of staffers for "cybersecurity" feels like just another attempt to bloat up the size of an organization and create more 'bullshit' jobs, as David Graeber put it over half a decade ago.

abixb··on Mumble: Open-Source, Low Latency, High Quality Voice Chat
I believe Discord also uses Opus codec IIRC. But wonderful to see the codec in a fully open-source project.

Added noise suppression would also be great, especially a FOSS-based one (Discord uses AI-based noise suppression from Krisp [0] -- a Berkeley, CA based for-profit startup).

I'm curious if there are any FOSS community projects in this noise suppression space. Given the rapid rise in WFH culture post covid-19, I can see an explosion in demand for s/w products in this space.

abixb··on Who Is Still Buying VHS Tapes?
>Who is still buying VHS tapes?

Patrick Bateman probably.

Jokes aside that was a really good read.

This article raises an important point about the fragmentation of content across different services (with many movie production houses starting their own streaming platforms, like Lionsgate for example).

This fragmented streaming landscape really is a far cry from the idealistic "all content under one roof" posturing that steaming services generally took when launching their platforms. Another victim of the 'walled garden' problem plaguing the tech world.

abixb··on When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
Thank you. I solved it. My decoding sequence was wrong before (I was trying to decode in reverse), but your pointers helped me.
abixb··on When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
Great post, thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

BTW, on a side note, when you try and visit the blog's homepage[0] and scroll down to the bottom, you find a link to an actual (password protected) PDF file called Mango.pdf[1]. The author 'Alex' says the password for the PDF has been embedded in the page and it didn't take me a lot of time to figure the password out from the HTML source[2].

But when I opened the PDF, I was hit with this random string of characters:

cGJhdGVuZ2h5bmd2YmFmLCBsYmggZmJ5aXJxIHpsIHlodnR2IGNobW15ci4gQCB6ci BiYSBnanZnZ3JlIGp2Z3UgbGJoZSBzbmliaGV2Z3IgcXJmZnJlZyBnYiB0cmcgbGJo ZSBlcmpuZXEuIFZnJ2YgeXZ4ciwgYWJnIG4gaXJlbCB0YmJxIGVyam5lcSBmYiBodQ o=

I tried to decode this using every available decoder, but it only throws up random result. Was wondering if any of you smart people here had any idea about this code.

EDIT: SOLVED IT!

As the commenters who replied to me mentioned, this puzzle is double-encoded. I think the trick is to figure out which decoder to use first.

abixb··on Microsoft has removed the “use offline account” option when installing Windows
Not unusual when you consider this fact: when reddit was originally founded back in '05, the ability to create an anonymous account with a pseudonym in seconds was the goal. The redesign is a shame, but I'm glad they chose to stick with their old UI via a decicated URL (old.reddit.com).
abixb··on Twitch streamers who spend years broadcasting to no one
>Are we stuck in the game of attention engineering forever?

More or less. As the content generated exceeds limits of human attention, it is our ability to pay attention that is scarce and much sought after. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.

abixb··on Ask HN: What is so different between EU and US govt?
The United States is generally considered to be a free-market hegemony (and has been at the helm of the pecking order since the early 1900s), and the system was set-up (at least when it was originally conceived) in a manner so as to cause minimal Big Government interference in day-to-day affairs of the people and the states of the Union. Freedom is something folks in the United States take very seriously, and this includes freedom to trade and open-up businesses freely, with minimal regulation and taxation -- heck the American Revolution itself was triggered because of tiff over taxation, extending more broadly to tyranny. [0]

Now, contemporary EU on the other hand has a vastly different and divergent history from that of the U.S. and Europeans, generally speaking, aren't as skeptical of their government as Americans are. Also, EU leans more to the left (generally speaking) relative to the United States, most "right-wing" parties in the EU would be considered to be slightly left-of-center if they were based in the U.S. [1]

Now, with that out of the way, to address your question -- both places have vastly different history and the divergent histories has given birth to vastly different cultures, helped by the fact that they're separated by the second-biggest body of water on the planet, making it even harder for inter-culture interaction. Right-leaning countries, like the U.S. for example, generally advocate for more free trade, less regulation and less taxation which is directly antithetical to the core principles of left-leaning countries, like the EU-bloc for example. abixb··on 14 years of Mark Zuckerberg saying sorry, not sorry about Facebook
No company in the history of Big Tech has gotten away with as much malpractice, breach of trust/ethics, invasion of privacy as facebook has in its (relatively) short history.

Facebook management's recorded antics will likely become a case-study for future founders and entrepreneurs -- taught in business schools and ilk.
