aaronblohowiak··on What 'Project Hail Mary' teaches us about the PlanetScale vs. Neon debate
scalzi is mil-sci-fi, which I also enjoy, but not man vs nature conflicts like weir writes about (even Artemis is largely about solving physical problems even if they arise from interpersonal conflict..)
aaronblohowiak··on Serving 200M requests per day with a CGI-bin
Ehhhhhhh. I believe but cannot cite that fork() got a lot cheaper over the last 30 years as well (independent of machine stats, I believe the Linux impl is inherently cheaper now but I can’t remember the details.) cgi bin works really well if you don’t have to pay for ssl or tcp connections to databases or other services, but you can maybe run something like istio if you need that. I have long thought that (fast)cgi is better model than proprietary “lambda” /“faas”. But the languages de jure and vendor lock in didn’t favor a standards based approach here.

why wouldn't r&d count as an expense? why do amortization schedules constitute a subsidy?

thanks i will check them out.
aaronblohowiak··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Building an AS/RS for trading cards. I did my POC smaller scale hacked together and now I'm building v1 (which I'm having to fight second system syndrome pretty hard on.) After getting very refactoring reluctant with untyped python, I'm making the transition to Rust and enjoying it quite a bit.

omg, I wish there was a service like jlpcb / pcbway but for cable harnesses.. do you know of any? I'd love to take something like your tool and choose length and quantity and order it....
aaronblohowiak··on Why is the Rust compiler so slow?
what language are you using where you arent pulling in deps for much of the work?
aaronblohowiak··on Why is the Rust compiler so slow?
by FAR my biggest complaint about Golang was null instead of Option. could have been special cased like their slice and map and would have been so so so much better than nil checks imho. really, a big miss.
aaronblohowiak··on A Deep Dive into Solid Queue for Ruby on Rails
Resque was a staple for a long long time. In the jvm world, throw everything into Kafka is also a staple of a lot of "enterprise" shops. Or SQS for AWS places I've worked at. I think it is not a ruby language thing, but a certain kind of architecture thing.
aaronblohowiak··on A brief, incomplete, and mostly wrong history of robotics
that's the thing about two dishwashers, there is no unloading except at time of use.
aaronblohowiak··on A Brief, Incomplete, and Mostly Wrong History of Robotics
if you have a good dishwasher and don't overfill it, you probably are over-washing by hand. with two dishwashers (one dirty, one clean,) and most of the problem is solved.

nit within a nit: I believe you intended to write "nearly orthogonal directions within n dimensional space" which is important as you are distinguishing direction from dimension in your post.

There is no dairy without lots of dead male cows. “Lacto” vegetarians for ethical reasons are frequently unaware or ignorant of this.

I agree with your points but they do not lead to the conclusion that the GP was implying (that Marx contains the solution to what ails us)

aaronblohowiak··on Natural occurring molecule rivals Ozempic in weight loss, sidesteps side effects
Most obese and very overweight people cannot sustain the output of 700 calories an hour, cardiovascularly (spelling) or with the state of their knees and muscles.

Also, it’s very easy to eat an extra 700 calories especially if you are in the “I worked out so I deserve a treat” camp.

Your lack of understanding comes across in your stance as well as the attitude.

Yes exercise is fantastic for your quality of life years and all cause mortality, but it’s not the whole story.

aaronblohowiak··on Natural occurring molecule rivals Ozempic in weight loss, sidesteps side effects
>1) compared with persons with normal weight, those with obesity have more muscle mass but poor muscle quality; 2) diet-induced weight loss reduces muscle mass without adversely affecting muscle strength; 3) weight loss improves global physical function, most likely because of reduced fat mass; 4) high protein intake helps preserve lean body and muscle mass during weight loss but does not improve muscle strength and could have adverse effects on metabolic function; 5) both endurance- and resistance-type exercise help preserve muscle mass during weight loss, and resistance-type exercise also improves muscle strength. We therefore conclude that weight-loss therapy, including a hypocaloric diet with adequate (but not excessive) protein intake and increased physical activity (particularly resistance-type exercise), should be promoted to maintain muscle mass and improve muscle strength and physical function in persons with obesity.
