aaronax··on Merkle Town: Explore the certificate transparency ecosystem
It is kind of a bummer that I can't have a website flying under the radar (given a requirement to have a cert signed by a well-known CA).

There is a subset of personal websites that I have rather not have poked and prodded by everyone, yet still be able to casually access them from random places.

aaronax··on It's not always DNS, unless it is
Delete it.
aaronax··on It's not always DNS, unless it is
Cnames, reverse records, TXT records, the sky is the limit
aaronax··on Security Issue: Cloud Site Manager presented me your consoles, not mine
It is unlikely that a home user has network functions in use that rely on the controller.
aaronax··on End of Life of Technologies and Devices
Pretty nice to have this level of openness on a data set. In my dreamworld all the data would be in Wikidata.
aaronax··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
T9 was fine for typing and probably hundreds of millions of people used it.
aaronax··on Second Life UPS Mark II
These exist, just look for inverter/chargers. Tripp-Lite APS750 as an example though may not be LiFePO4 compatible. I use one as a sump pump power backup.

Various Victron products as another example that are actually LiFePO4 compatible: MultiPlus, Quattro, or others depending on what capabilities you need.

aaronax··on An architect has found a way to build flood-proof homes
So that someone with one hour of training can safely assemble an electrical system in a house.
aaronax··on An architect has found a way to build flood-proof homes
Need something like PoE for power distribution.
aaronax··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
You really should have different physical hardware for such different use-cases.
aaronax··on Roundcube open-source webmail software merges with Nextcloud
The exact same as transfer out of normal S3? Don't get me wrong, I am as big of an AWS pessimist as one is likely to stumble across.

I guess I could reinterpret your original comment as "Have fun paying a fortune if you need to get those files [out of AWS] again."

instead of my original interpretation "Have fun paying a fortune if you need to get those files [out of Glacier] again."

Agree!

aaronax··on Roundcube open-source webmail software merges with Nextcloud
For "expedited" retrieval it is $0.01 per request plus $0.03 per GB. Doesn't seem like a fortune. And there are retrieval options for 1/10th the cost.
aaronax··on RFC9460: Service Binding via the DNS (SVCB and HTTPS Resource Records)
Maybe they shouldn't have used http:// for something that isn't http.

Nah, users are too dumb and "my precious adoption rates"

aaronax··on OpenAI researchers warned board of AI breakthrough ahead of CEO ouster
I scored 32 on the Act which was one of the highest scored in the high school, if not the highest. My parents thought I could do better and that it would be worth it, so they offered a new hunting rifle if I improved my score. Got a 35 on the retake and got a super nice Sako rifle and scope--IIRC a little over $1000 in 2005.
aaronax··on FCC launches inquiry to increase minimum broadband speed [pdf]
Though the fiber system as a whole may not be capable of symmetry. For example GPON with 2.5gbps/1.25gbps up/down and 10G-PON at 10/2.5 up/down.
aaronax··on Exclusive hardwood may be illegally harvested
Black locust is basically as good as ipe--competitive in characteristics like hardness and rot resistance, and I think slighly lower in price. It has been used for years for fence posts and now a lumber industry for it seems to be maturing. Apparently it grows like a weed and is even considered invasive in some places.

I used black locust for a large porch and am very pleased with it.

aaronax··on Ask HN: PG's 'Do Things That Don't Scale' manual examples?
Ecowitt sensors are well done in my experience and they have a soil sensor product. Works with HomeAssistant too.
aaronax··on Amazon used algorithm to test how much it could raise prices: FTC
Probably they are less efficient at retail operations than a retailer, so have higher overhead. Also wouldn't want to undercut the retailers, who are providing valuable shelf space and marketing.
aaronax··on Airliner Repair, 24/7 Boeing’s traveling fix-it team (2008)
That is a GREAT show, possibly the best in the genre.
aaronax··on Unity's oldest community announces dissolution
It is plausible that it did not live up to reasonable expectations in some way. Equally likely that someone was being dishonest though.

Example: I once returned a board that I had cut in half. It was window trim with a shaped profile, and I had previously purchased and installed some of the same SKU before. When I went to install my freshly cut board next to the first ones, it was a little too obvious that it was from a different batch or manufacturer with a slightly different profile.

How about a bunch of iPhones in a medical facility being disabled because of some amount of helium being leaked when they were charging the MRI machine?

aaronax··on Derek Siver's shell script for tech independence
IDK, I think an important part of the process is the act of doing. You more deeply understand what is going on.

aaronax··on The Dendera Dating Controversy
This is the weirdest thing at that link:

> But when Mercury is moving fastest in its elliptical orbit around the Sun (and it is closest to the Sun), each rotation is not accompanied by sunrise and sunset like it is on most other planets. The morning Sun appears to rise briefly, set, and rise again from some parts of the planet's surface.

aaronax··on A venture-backed startup has quietly bought more than 80 mom-and-pop shops
Safe Harbor I think buys marinas as owners age out of them. A marina tends to start out small and grow over time under a single owner, until they are successful yet unattractive for any one other individual to plunk down $x million. So they get bought up by the big org and it gets harder to find reasonably priced mom and pop marinas.
aaronax··on How to Produce Green Hydrogen for $1/Kg
Collection and transportation for natural gas, not hydrogen. Which is very easy to imagine since it is already widely done.
aaronax··on Wind and solar will be 25% of U.S. generating capacity within three years
It costs somewhere around $300/kwh to build utility-scale storage. Say they can cycle 3000 times. We find that just the storage costs $0.10/kwh, which is in the range of generation costs themselves (probably double wholesale generation costs). So one cannot assume to be able to cheaply store power in utility-scale batteries.
aaronax··on Payment systems while working at a pizza place
Any that are text/TUI/"green-screen"-based are often lauded for speed once you are familiar with them, so there is that kind of best. And if they are still in use even today, then that survival is a strong point in favor of them being "the best".

As far as specific products, NCR Counterpoint is one that stands out amongst those I have used. Fast and flexible, kind of easy to figure out most things on your own.

The Costco cafeteria self-service kiosk seems to be an amazing POS (customer perspective). Incredibly optimized in every regard. The receipt seems to print out before you have even finished removing your card from the chip reader.

aaronax··on Where in the USA is this?
Yeah they should not be using a Mercator projection if a key part of the game is triangulation AND there is a ruler shown on screen.
aaronax··on Pay-frozen Microsofties not happy to hear of 'landmark year'
Hold shares to reap rewards of "landmark years" of the underlying business.

Paychecks are compensation for your time/effort.

And of course as your time/effort becomes more directly linked to the success of the business, more of your compensation is in stock.
