aarchi··on “This destroys the RSA cryptosystem”
I was surprised to see, in the 1999 email you linked, that NSA mass surveillance was already widely known, before the NSA ramp up from 9/11 and before the Snowden disclosures.

> Actually, I don't think of the NSA's plots to deny everyone but themselves (and those they dub worthy) access to strong un-GAKed commercial cryptography as a conspiracy, per se. NSA officials acted upon a fairly open if Byzantine strategy. It was hatched by men who obviously believe that Western liberal society is best safeguarded if the US can continue to gleen the benefits of the huge passive eavesdropping net that has for decades sustained America's geo-political dominance.

aarchi··on Map of my personal data infrastructure
I've exported my data from 35 services, most via GDPR/CCPA exports. I've written a couple scripts to automate some, but it's not painless. I hope to eventually have a local-first unified store of my data that's easy to analyze.

As a part of this, I've been working on a Go library [0] for processing local Firefox- and Chromium-based browser data, including history, bookmarks, and extension settings.

aarchi··on GNU Taler – Payment system for privacy-friendly, fast, easy online transactions
Great name. The word “Taler” derives from the “Joachimsthaler Guldengroschen” currency (Guilder groschen of St. Joachin's Valley), or “Thaler” for short. The coin was introduced in 1518 in the Holy Roman Empire and many currencies in Europe became named after the Thaler. The Dutch brought their “leeuwendaler” (lit. lion daler) coin to New Netherlands (now New York), lending its name to the US Dollar. I presume Taler was used for this project to match modern German orthography and to avoid confusion with the English ‘th’ ‹θ› sound.

aarchi··on Show HN: Alert yourself after a long-running task in terminal
Here is it for fish, using the postexec event handler:

    function postexec_notify --arg cmd --on-event fish_postexec
      set -l s $pipestatus
      if test "$CMD_DURATION" -ge 25000 && ! string match -rq '(^man|\s--help)(\s|$)' $cmd
        if string match "$status" -qv 0 $s
          terminal-notifier -title $cmd -message 'Exited with '(string join '|' $s)' after '(math $CMD_DURATION / 1000)s
        else
          terminal-notifier -title $cmd -message 'Finished in '(math $CMD_DURATION / 1000)s
        end
      end
    end
As a bonus, this includes the command line in the notification.

I found that this can be somewhat annoying when reading man pages or interactive content though. To remedy this, I tried detecting whether the terminal is focused at the time of command completion, but it doesn't seem possible to get the terminal's pid from fish. The pid of the topmost application can be retrieved with:

osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to return unix id of (first process whose its frontmost is true)'
aarchi··on How a secret European language ‘made a rabbit’ and survived
The intermixing of languages is fascinating. I'm familiar with the phrase „Bock haben“, but was unaware that it originated with Rotwelsch.

aarchi··on Raiders of the Lost Ark as a Black-and-White Silent Film (2014)
It would be so much more enjoyable set to John Williams’ score. I’m sure that fans have constructed the complete score. Many silent films had live musical accompaniments, so it would fit the aesthetic.
aarchi··on WhatsApp to move ahead with privacy update despite backlash
The WhatsApp fiasco has been great because Signal is now widely-known and I haven't needed WhatsApp anymore for international calls.
aarchi··on StoneKnifeForth (With a Metacircular Compiler)
I built an AOT compiler for Whitespace with its own SSA-form intermediate representation that lowers to LLVM IR. Whitespace is very similar to a minimal Forth, except, well, syntax. Since StoneKnifeForth has no filesystem access, only stdin and stdout, the principles could be easily adapted for Whitespace.

It’s not the only extant orbiter. Most of them are in Baikonur or Moscow. The one in Speyer was an atmospheric test vehicle.

How do you install z on fish? z.sh is supposed to be sourced, but that won't work in config.fish.

Can you elaborate on lazy analysis replacing the need for macros?

aarchi··on Elfstedentocht
According to Wikipedia, Elfstedentocht is pronounced [ɛlf'steːdə(n)tɔxt] and Alvestêdetocht [ɔlvəˈstɛːdətɔχt]. Elfstedentocht is close to how I'd pronounce it as a non-native German speaker, except I was pronouncing ‹st› as [ʃ] and ‹o› as [o] (my native dialect has the cot-caught merger, so I don't use ɔ). Alvestêdetocht isn't much different, except for the ‹A› as [ɔ] that I wasn't expecting.
aarchi··on Elfstedentocht
I've been using inline roller skates as my primary mode of transportation for the past month. The city I am currently in was clearly not designed for bike or skate traffic, but some newer areas are more accommodating. I've managed to do anything I would have used a car for, on skates. It certainly requires more logistical creativity, but it's a much more enjoyable experience and has no adverse environmental effects.

I would be thrilled to participate in an Elfstedentocht. I am somewhat trained and have my own figure skates, though I'd want speed skates for this event. The 200km seems doable, especially since there would be no elevation changes.

aarchi··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
Would this bypass most Google Font tracking? An extension that makes Google Font requests on behalf of the requesting site and caches the response indefinitely and for all sites, somewhat like LocalCDN/Decentraleyes, but on demand.

Why would Matrix have potentially larger privacy guarantees than Signal when self-hosted? As I understand it, when communicating with a user on a different homeserver, those chats are mirrored to that homeserver.

aarchi··on IPFS Support in Brave
The IPFS component is written in Go and is packaged as a crx, like the built-in Rust ad blocker. Can Brave components like these be created by 3rd-party developers? I'd love to make extension daemons in decent non-JS languages like Go.

> The go-ipfs daemon binary will be packaged into a crx file and installable via the component updater. There will be a different package per platform (Windows, macOS, and Linux x64) each with a different component extension ID. [1]

aarchi··on DuckDuckGo Reaches 100M Daily Search Queries
Since switching to DDG, I haven't used Google Search once nor !g. I've had a better experience with DDG: no sponsored results, less skewed rankings, less censoring (Google removes many results from DMCA requests), and of course no tracking. Google's lazy-loaded useless suggestion boxes, added a few years ago, that push the content down, often when clicking on a link, were my final annoyance before switching. For the first bit after switching, I missed seeing the daily Google doodles, but I'm now more cynical towards Google and no longer care.
aarchi··on DuckDuckGo Reaches 100M Daily Search Queries
I haven't had success with using Invidious. I'd love to ditch the YT frontend and tracking though.

I have extensions that remove suggested videos on the sidebar, homepage, and during the video; as well as ads, comments, and product recommendations. I use YT in a Firefox container without an account that is separate from my other Google container.

aarchi··on Apple removes first-party firewall exemption in macOS 11.2 beta 2
I'm still on Mojave to use 32-bit apps. Any way to use 32-bit in Catalina or later?
aarchi··on Ask HN: How do we know Signal or Telegram don't store our data on their servers?
I know that developers can post LLVM bitcode to the App Store instead of a binary, which allows Apple to recompile it for architectural changes. I'd be surprised if Apple optimized per device. Creating separate builds with optimizations for different iPhone models would make more sense. Do you have more details on that?
