And neither have anything to do with shyness. "Think before you speak" is still very important advice, and then if you prefer to not raise hostility, do it because you chose so not because of shyness.

That doesn't mean we can't look for ways to make the situation better. To cut along the grain of human nature, so to speak.

No joke! This is what happens when trolls are classically trained.
aGHz··on Ask HN: Fundamental texts for serious web engineers?
Well, the OP specifically asked for texts on the fundamental subjects of CS as they relate to web development.

Since you bring up a good point though, what would be useful open source projects to contribute to if you're specifically interested in exploring deeper issues?

For myself, I remember learning about networking (and especially coding the network layer in C) and also a bit about crypto by tinkering with World of Warcraft unofficial open source servers two years ago. Wish I had the chance to contribute something back before real life took over again.

Speaking of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP), there's a good UC Berkeley course based on it up at http://www.academicearth.org/courses/the-structure-and-inter.... It's very long, but if lectures are more your learning style, you might find this very useful.

That sounds ridiculous now but it's actually not that bad when you get used to it. Besides, people would likely still keep the month names to refer roughly (if not even exactly) to periods of the year. The real benefit would be in dropping months from the business and commerce world.

I can testify to this, I have pretty low self-discipline in the sense that I find it very hard to force myself to do something I don't want to do. When I do manage to build a habit or a routine though, I find it pretty easy to stick to it.

It's not even being anal, if I was telling someone I love tangerines and they tell me that's awesome, oranges are really good for you... I'd be a little baffled I suppose.

I really love how the author complains about the other missing the bigger picture, when there's a bigger picture they themselves are oblivious to: the ideas in your head are really awesome and all, but if you don't learn how to use language properly to communicate them then they're useless to everyone else.
