a3n··on Who Owns the US National Debt?
This has been a news theme for some years. A few years ago the problem got some attention, as problems periodically do. I remember Home Depot and a lumber mill featuring. They had enough candidates for the jobs they had, but rejected many for weed. There was much believable hand wringing.

Of course now Amazon is in the news for asking their contracted local delivery "partners" to not reject driver applicants for weed. Although this time around it's not because of weed directly, it's the general lack of applicants; Amazon's already expressed concern that, due to turnover, they may have already cycled through most of their potential workers.

a3n··on No Rights Employee
It's a new class of employee in the UK.

From their FAQ:

The Finance Bill, 2017 created the concept of "employed for tax purposes" and "inside Off-payroll rules". These terms are a complicated way to describe the No Rights Employee.

a3n··on Automated hiring software is rejecting millions of viable job candidates
> For example, some systems automatically reject candidates with gaps of longer than six months in their employment history, without ever asking the cause of this absence. It might be due to a pregnancy, because they were caring for an ill family member, or simply because of difficulty finding a job in a recession.

Or a pandemic!

But just set it and forget it, and you can make it to happy hour with your crew.

a3n··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
This is why cops on Interstates will target out of state plates. People just want to get on to their destination. And not being a state resident, it makes it harder for them to fight after the fact. [citation needed]
a3n··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
I recall an episode of COPS where the Sheriff (?) of Multnomah County Oregon was grinning into the camera, declaring how good he's going to look driving around a pickup truck that they'd just confiscated.

Multnomah County featured a lot on COPS. That Sheriff was camera ready.

a3n··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
No, it's not an aberration. Cops in various departments around the country take classes to do this most effectively.

a3n··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
Any property can be seized. Put it in a financial institution, and dispose of it as you see fit at your destination.

And the Veterans Administration puts the "pretend" in "care."

Source: Watching news articles over decades of the VA denying "service related" for injuries and poisoning, so the government isn't held responsible. Agent Orange and cancer, for example. Or burn pits in the middle east wars. Or concussions from explosions.

a3n··on We don’t need nearly as much protein as we consume
One thing about processed foods is that they're usually based on refined grains, i.e. preprocessed carbs. Your body sucks up these carbs too quickly, resulting in insulin resistance and pancreatic failure.

Look down the aisles of a store. If it's in a box, or a bag, it's probably based on processed carbs.

Disclosure: Biased diabetic who has struggled with management, and now "strictly" (with the best of intentions) limits processed carbs. Bread of any kind, especially. Toss the hamburger bun, for example. And it's worked, with help from meds.

a3n··on Switching to the i3 window manager
Regolith installed, via PPA. Don't forget "sudo apt update." I forgot.

Commence fiddling in three ... two ... one ...

EDIT: One thing I like immediately is the little shortcut hint menu on the right. I first expected to be able to click each hint, and have that action happen. But it doesn't do that. It doesn't do anything. You have to actually read the hint, and type the displayed shortcut, thus forcing you to learn the system. Not tough love, just firm love.

a3n··on Switching to the i3 window manager
Originally SW dev, most recently SWQA. I rage quit my last job over a conflict with a dev manager. No one else was interested in me.

Been driving three years and change. I mostly like it. I've never had a meeting, standup or otherwise. I miss my couch, weekends and the money. But it's pretty low stress. No SO, and my son is grown.

a3n··on Switching to the i3 window manager
I used to use Awesome. And I3 before that. My young adult son would sometimes ask to do something quick on my laptop. Hilarity ensued.

Now I'm a truck driver. Bought a new laptop awhile back. Don't have time to fiddle (drive, eat, sleep) so I left the default Mint desktop.

Right now I'm being unloaded at a distribution center in Alabama. They tell me it will be 5 to 6 hours until they're done. No labor on Labor Day, I guess.

So I'll install Regolith, based on a couple comments here, and see how that goes.

I actually kinda miss fiddling.

a3n··on Thomas Nagel: Thoughts Are Real (2013)
You may have run across Thomas Nagel via his What is it like to be a bat?

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=nagle+%22to+be+a+bat%22&t=fpas&ia=...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Is_It_Like_to_Be_a_Bat%...

> Nagel famously asserts that "an organism has conscious mental states if and only if there is something that it is like to be that organism—something it is like for the organism."[2] This assertion has achieved special status in consciousness studies as "the standard 'what it's like' locution."[3] Daniel Dennett, while sharply disagreeing on some points, acknowledged Nagel's paper as "the most widely cited and influential thought experiment about consciousness."

a3n··on The chip shortage keeps getting worse – why can't we just make more?
Truck driver. Besides Walmart (my major shopping store, because you can park a truck up in there), truck stop convenience stores are chronically short of things in the last N months. I know, the irony ...

Unflavored half and half single servings for coffee go early. The bulk half and half dispensers are usually empty these days. (The flavored side is often still available.) Then coffee lids. Then large coffee cups. Gatorade Zero often goes, and then regular Gatorade. The Power Aide seems to always be available. The open cooler boat with yogurt and sandwiches often runs low or empty.

Vicious cycle of staff shortages everywhere, thus unable to source, produce, deliver and stock at former rates.

So do cows, eventually. :)
a3n··on Flowers Make a Nice Gift
As a truck driver, just about every day is just about the same, so I lose track.

But I am sometimes reminded that it's Mother's day (the actual Sunday), when I'm in a Walmart on a Sunday morning (maybe I parked there the night before) and see a few men that need a shave, looking over the flowers, often with a kid or two tagging along.

a3n··on GoDaddy Boots Texas Right to Life Abortion 'Whistleblower' Site
> A site that explicitly encourages people to narc on their neighbors by revealing privileged medical information seems to be in pretty clear violation of those standards, one might think, which is exactly what prolifewhistleblower.com did.

How delightful if HIPPA played a part in removing this law. The essence of the law is those ability of anyone, anywhere in the US, to bring a lawsuit. The theory is that since law enforcement is not involved current law like Roe v Wade is not violated.

a3n··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
Yeah, that "updating your resume" in your parent is a pretty big employer foot gun. Makes you that much more exit-ready.
a3n··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
> So too bad, had a better offer to advance elsewhere and their interest in me was clear.

"Their interest in me was clear."

Exactly this.

Enlightened and effective leadership would pair a "not this time" response with a series of career development meetings, resulting in a tailored path for advancement; not as detailed as "this job, then that job, then that," but informed enough to show the candidate that they were heard and valued.

An additional bone in the form of a small raise and or training would also be effective.

And of course the plan needs to be reviewed periodically and sincerely, for adjustments and progress on the part of both parties.

a3n··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
I wonder if internal rejection should be seen as similar to being put on a PIP: a drawn out layoff.
a3n··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
It makes sense to hire external if you're trying to grow headcount, or trying to "frontfill" before firing people.
