I love netbooks and I am curious to get one of these at some point - I can’t justify one right now.

I do have my ASUS EEEPC 701 4G Surf still working. I think it is 18 years old at this point? It is rocking Antix, in its 3.6 GB hard drive. It broke the S key in the keyboard last night and I ordered a replacement.

I use it as writer deck and to ssh to my server and raspberry pi from the sofa.

It is built in a very resistant way? Survived my kid so far.

a1o··on 1-Bit Bonsai Image 4B Image Generation for Local Devices
That is very low, looks like it should run in base MacMini M4 with 16GB RAM. I understand it is not released yet? What sort of harness is necessary for this type of model? (I have only used coding agents through GH Copilot in VS Code, the JetBrains AI tool and Pi, this last one was sort of a pain to setup…)

Anyone could pickup the minimal hardware requirements for this? Like both RAM and Storage?
a1o··on Tsplat – Run Gaussian splatting in your terminal
Second commit is an ask to an llm “pickup things that go viral”. That is a weird thing to ask. :/
a1o··on Voxel Space (2017)
When this was first posted I made a game with a port of this approach to AGS Engine. Nowadays AGS is much faster since we have improved a lot of things, but this wasn’t the case at the time, so I had to make a few little tricks to make the rendering work well with the engine at the time.

a1o··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
I have a feeling that new was much slower moving five years ago. Now if I check new everything is from the last 15-20 minutes.
a1o··on Last.fm is now independent
Wasn’t it more like SoundCloud?

I never used last.fm but I always assumed it was more like SoundCloud. It’s been a few years I don’t use SoundCloud though.

a1o··on A few interesting modern pixel fonts
It would be nice to add the license/copyright rules associated with these, which is important if you are using in something like a game.
a1o··on GitHub Actions down again today
This page tells a very different story from GitHub own status page. What is different here?
a1o··on GitHub Actions down again today
It’s down for companies too, if your company org is using GitHub enterprise too.
a1o··on GitHub Actions down again today
Is there a tier for open source organizations? Do I have to admin any of AWS that runs behind the scenes or can I pay a fixed price to depot and get it to solve everything out of my way?

I used to use Cirrus CI as an alternative to GitHub Actions and am looking for a new alternative. I wonder if Depot could fit in the same way for my needs. I need to run builds and tests in Windows, Linux and macOS.

a1o··on GitHub Actions down again today
What I don’t get about this is how you run OS specific tasks (Windows, macOS, Linux)..

I started playing with proxmox VMs and containers in them (docker and tart) to see if I can build some local infrastructure to properly solve this…

a1o··on Show HN: Write your BPF programs in Go, not C
What is BPF?
a1o··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
> Third-party keyboards, still not usable but browsers are basically ok.

The one third-party keyboard that seems to work is the one from Google, if you want a better experience than Apple’s.

a1o··on LAN-LOK: The Antarctic DOS Sabotage Game Lost for 34 Years
It would be cool if the dos emulator this uses would be updated with some touch controls that were like the old hackers keyboard on Android and some drag mouse like scummvm.
a1o··on Sales and Dungeons: Thermal printer TTRPG utility
I wonder, are there modern and cheap dot matrix printers (and papers?). They would give a “roguelike” feel to this sort of output.

I remember I enjoyed the simple typewriter behavior of connecting them to a computer db9 cable and using the terminal that used to come with windows to type out directly in the paper something short. I think this app had a red phone as icon or something like it (and there was a reimplementation later with a donkey on the icon).

a1o··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
I would love a KingJim Pomera DM 250 but I can’t have it shipped easily and it is hard to find in a physical store.
a1o··on My two-part desk setup (2025)
I can’t sit with my legs down like this, I always need them on top of something, and my legs are like super long. :/
a1o··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
There is an option to turn on semantic indexing and search on copilot in vscode. Although I have no perceptual differences when I turn it on. The docs mention something about it.

a1o··on Open source Kanban desktop app that runs parallel agents on every card
This is the way to go. I usually play with relatively stable software where the improvements are either performance or very small niche features that are built on top of already existing ones. Big changes are undesirable by both the others working on it and its users.
a1o··on The death of the brick and mortar toy store
In our case the coffee shop is in the bookstore and it is located right in front of the third. The third is a really nice park (think lake and lots of playgrounds plus activities).
a1o··on Flipper One – we need your help
Yeah. I remember like sixteen years ago, I think it was a N900 phone? A friend had it and I used it to fix a bug in a php website we had in the university through ssh. It was beautifully hacky, the website had no version control. It was awesome. I think the server actually ran Solaris at the time. I’ve been chasing a device with that form factor since forever, but sort of building my own I feel I will never get one.
a1o··on Flipper One – we need your help
Does sorting in chronological order require a special client for HN or is this something available in the web interface? (I can’t find it)
a1o··on Flipper One – we need your help
I am looking at this now, and to be frankly it not having a keyboard makes this uninteresting for me. Either a slide one (like old Linux Nokias), a small blackberry like one or one like the phone in Die Hard 4. Having no keyboard reduces a lot what I can do on the go vs a GPD Pocket.
a1o··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
When you say you are not just doing inference, you mean you are also training your own llms? I am curious what other things can be done.
a1o··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
This is interesting but I am unsure how you make money out of this home setup, I would imagine if one would be offering consultancy to a business the business would make their own equipment/infrastructure available, which would also give a better control of their data. But perhaps I am thinking this because I am thinking about very big companies. Then, on very small business I don’t see they having the use case with the budget to match the need. So is this for specific services for medium sized businesses? Can you explain this a bit?
a1o··on Project Hail Mary – Stellar Navigation Chart
This is pretty cool. Has anyone ever seen a diy star projector for the home? Most of these toy star projectors like the Sega Homestar require placing the projector at the center of the room to point up. At the same time most of the small active projectors (like for movies) require a screen for the image to be better seen (they aren’t very bright). Ideally I would like something that could autocorrect the dimensions of things on the surface, so it would project distorted in a way that it would visually look non-distorted and also I would be looking for the cheapest projector that still manage a good bright for stars during the night, without requiring to put a screen on the home ceiling.

I’ve seen proper star projectors from Zeiss but my ceiling is not a dome - plus expensive and requires infinite amounts of power..

a1o··on Throwing AI-generated walls of text into conversations
People use that too when speaking in real life when they are stalling a bit to conclude their internal thoughts before providing an answer.
a1o··on Throwing AI-generated walls of text into conversations
It is too bad that neither Unhinged or Unglued had a proper Wall of Text card.
a1o··on Google changes its search box
It hallucinates greatly about many things when I ask about C++ things. Things that you can easily find the right answer in cppreference or by just inspecting headers in your own IDE.
