a123b456c··on Lead pigment in turmeric is the culprit in a global poisoning mystery (2024)
I have numerous experiences being quoted by NPR reporters. I have regularly observed them to deliberately frame stories to interest their audience (as I believe they should). In this case, if the reporter claims poisoning without sufficient evidence, the reporter and their employer will be attacked. If the reporter provides no plausible explanation, the story will be found wanting.

Every human endeavour reflects common human behaviors. Large groups of humans do not interact without political considerations arising.

Science has a few aspects that are distinct from non-Science enterprises, but more aspects in common.

a123b456c··on Show HN: I built a modern Goodreads alternative
I'm an avid reader and platforms expert who would love a reason to migrate away from goodreads. My first three impressions: 1. I want to know your business model and ownership structure. Moving is costly, give me a reason to try you as opposed to others. That reason should include a long-term incentive, above and beyond new features or better design. 2. I searched the android app store but the only thing I found was anime character-related content. You probably have the wrong name. 3. I like your features ideas! But I don't have enough information right now to motivate me to import my goodreads history, much of which is deeply personal.

a123b456c··on Fewer students are enrolling in doctoral degrees
I've known some English PhDs. They were more focused on self-education rather than external rewards. Many of them were training to become high school teachers eventually, and they knew it. They saw no hurry to begin that career.

Don't forget SDG&E/Sempra. San Diego locals hate them with a passion. It is crazy that an area with such abundant solar generation and environmental concerns should have such expensive power.

I think it's a neat photo, and I appreciate the spirit of your post, but I recommend you to modify or delete it, unless you got his consent to post.

Not that anyone would, but I would be creeped out if I learned that people were posting pictures of my office without my knowledge.

a123b456c··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
This argument may focus too much on the category of external rewards.

I might well be kidding myself or self-justifying, but I believe internal rewards are at least as important. Some materially successful people are deeply unhappy.

> Academics who specialize in obscure areas love to get their name in the press, and the easiest way to do that is to go to a reporter and make vague and irresponsible claims about risks to human health, even if those risks are very, very small.

I won't deny that many such academics exist. And yet...

The numerous successful academics at reputable universities that I know (including me) are uniformly mortified when our names are associated with mistaken interpretations in the press. Some of us (including me) simply stop doing press interviews because it happens so often.

If you want to find an incentive to get undeserved attention, I recommend you look at economic incentives within the press itself. Too much time pressure, not enough training, desperate need to gather attention to sell ads. All the opposite of the academic world.

a123b456c··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
I think the implicit argument is that he wants to avoid more canceled contracts, along with other forms of retribution like personal attacks he experienced a few years earlier.
a123b456c··on On Impactful AI Research
What I have to say may come across as harsh but I only intend it to be helpful.

If you invested in projects, and the investments did not pay off, I see three likely explanations.

First, maybe your investment function is miscalibrated.

Second, maybe your investment function is well calibrated but your time horizon is too long.

Third, maybe you are unlucky.

I have no insights into what happened in your case, I don't even know what field your are in.

But, case 1 suggests you may be unsuccessful in academia.

Case 2 suggests possible success after adjustment to more immediate reward.

Case three suggests possible success after a difficult recovery process and further investments.

None are ideal paths but cases 2 and 3 suggest possible recovery strategies if you are deeply committed to academia. The optimality of such an approach is highly subjective.

You likely should not feel like academia is the only available path, if you do that is a red flag that something is amiss.

a123b456c··on Classifying all of the pdfs on the internet
Agree with this but it does not apply to all fields. Economists have a norm of alphabetizing author names unless the contributions were very unevenly distributed. That way authors can avoid squabbling over contributions.

a123b456c··on Scientific journal publishers and editors say they are being offered bribes
Same. I serve in an editorial role for a top journal in my field. I know some foreign universities pay six-figure bonuses to faculty who publish in my journal. I have never been offered anything like a bribe.

To my ears, 'every' is hyperbole.
