_zamorano_··on Cash payments above €3000 to be outlawed in Netherlands
Like taxes are fair... You have the freelancers and small business struggling badly in my country, yet the goverment spends millions on nonsensical programs.
_zamorano_··on Bank transfers as a payment method (2021)
In Spain, to send money without commercial purposes, Bizum is everywhere.

No cost, no need of IBAN, SEPA, or any other information. Just a phone number, that might be in your contact list or not, the desired amount, and is done.

Some business use it too but of course, its application is very limited due to not charging a fee to end users.

_zamorano_··on Pydantic V2 leverages Rust's Superpowers [video]
You're being downvoted, but I sort of agree...

How in the world can I stop worrying about errors like using a non existant class member and having a runtime exception? How can I refactor?

Ok, the core devs add annotations, then type hints to the language.

Some other people create MyPy, the JetBrains people use some other linting thing that does well, but does not match MyPy. The Pydantic appear and some other people says its awesome, but yet again, different to the others...

And all that to enforce things we already had 20 years ago in Java 1.0

How about using dynamic typing for small script and prototyping and using better tools for bigger projects?

_zamorano_··on India lifted 415M out of poverty in 15 years, says UN
It's the double standards, you know. Not being able to vote, and so... While the US and its war machine has lost track of destroyed countries in this last decades in an Orwellian permanent conflict.

But the bad guys are the chinese, who hasn't been involved in a war in 40 years.

_zamorano_··on Finnish as a world language?
It is spanish! ;-)

I remember my younger days when Hristo Stoichkov came to play with Barcelona FC. A very aggresive and sweary player, a few years later he left to play for Parma FC, and while playing in Italy, he kept swearing in spanish!

I even saw him doing the same while playing for Bulgaria.

_zamorano_··on Korea shatters its own record for world’s lowest fertility rate
To me, goverments 'green' measures are just patches that won't work, but are very likely to ruin the lifestyle of the middle class, while the affluent keep theirs untouched.

At the same time, the only real solution that is population decline, is 'spontaniously' happening without any policies like one child per couple, and so.

If the economics of an older population are much easier to solve than our progressive destruction of the environment... Why not incentivice policies to keep people childless?

_zamorano_··on Risk Everything (2007)
Daniel Kahneman, in his book thinking fast and slow, has a really good insight on why people in bad situations keep taking bad choices.

Google "The fourfold pattern". Basically, he states that there's a cognitive bias where people in situations where a poor outcome is likely to happen, tend to risk too much, and not settle for a bad (but better) outcome that what they already have.

If they kept compounding these "bad but better choices", they might have a chance.

_zamorano_··on No-one knows what they are doing
>>> when you're held accountable by an entire country...

This is blatantly untrue.

Heck, the infamous trifecta Bush-Blair-Aznar led their countries on a war that destroyed a country and costed many human lifes, based on what we know were lies and invented data. What consecuences did they face?

And that's just an example. I can show you as many corruption cases as you want, and see how the subjects go on with their careers untouched.

_zamorano_··on Apple is discontinuing the iPod
I fondly remember my visit to the videoclub.

Never been a social guy, but I found enjoyable a short talk with the guy at the counter.

He gave me his opinion on the tape I was about to checkout and made suggestions about the new acquisitions. I guess after some weeks he knew my tastes and give a human-curated list, hehehe. They mostly tend to by nerdy, so we made a good fit, but they curated the list to old ladies, families and so...

A miss here and there, but I always found something enjoyable in all tapes. Even in the low budget, low quality ones.

Looks like ages ago...

_zamorano_··on Old Age and Creativity
To me, is a society and ego issue.

When you're 20-30 something and a nobody in your field, but a privileged mind, you keep your eyes open to all posibilities. You are hardworking and then results come.

Then you gain a name and have all eyes on you and your mental processes change. Suddenly with your opinions, you've got a reputation to defend. You're aware of those supporting you and those who are not. You're reasoning gets blurred by your ego and personality. Once you publicly speak an opinion on a topic for enough time, you cannot simply go back without looking like a moron.

There are several instances of the most brilliant minds following this pattern. Geniuses giving their backs to the scientific method, to all evidence, and looking like amateurs.

Comes to mind Einstein, spending his last years trying to debunk quantum physics against all evidence, Linus Pauling and his C-Vitamin craze or Nikola Tesla and his every time crazier projects with no practical viability. I guess there might be more.

_zamorano_··on More Americans are saying they’re ‘vaxxed and done’
How about Emmanuel Macron, french prime minister, wanting to "...piss them off. And we will continue to do this, to the end. This is the strategy.”"
_zamorano_··on Making Open Source economy more viable with dual license collectives
For a while, people in the open source community kept bashing proprietary software in a way that for many devs, writing such software is/was considered unethical. Something unique to software development.

Yes, Linux won on the web and we're freer than if Microsoft had won, but the corporations learnt a way to keep using the open-source tag, and Android is a great example, while cornering our freedoms more and more.

Then, the true mantainer with the open-source spirit, has to live for scraps, while seeing everyone else making the big buck.

To me, the current situation is a consequence of the ethics of the early open-source community, that left the average small propietary software developer unable to make money, but of course, could do nothing against the megacorps. Did they really think they could win?

What about looking to countries who doesn't drug kids like crazy and see the results?
_zamorano_··on Prince of Persia in JavaScript
For older kids, I think bricolage and manual labor can bring some of this attitudes you talk about.

The digital world is mostly done. Everything, from social networks, to videogames is studied to avoid frustration, be addictive, and generate a dopamine rush. When not, like competitive gaming and so... the skill gap is too big and the entrance barrier too high

Manual labor cannot be so easily simplified and automatized. Yes, you need to perform a task and, if it's common enough, you'll have a Youtube tutorial at one click reach. But that's not so easy in the real world, because you'll eventually find obstacles and unforeseen problems. Usually, the uploader is a skilled guy for whom, some situations, are not even worth mentioning, but will be a problem for a newbie.

Furthermore many basic manual task are not to be found in Youtube, because they're too specific. Yes, you can find a tutorial on how to hang something to a wall, but you need to hang an object of an specific shape, between two walls corner, where some other object is an obstacle.

In those cases, you're mostly on your own, but the task is achievable

_zamorano_··on Why Electron Is a Necessary Evil
The WinApi is too low level for most developers and situations.

Usually, you won't need to directly call any API function to build even a complex program.

.NET comes with everything included

_zamorano_··on Why Electron Is a Necessary Evil
Easier?

You can get a functional, graphical, Hello World! WinForms app running in like 10 seconds, ok, perhaps 20 seconds if your computer is slow

I can teach anybody with very basic programming skills to build something fancy in like 2 hours

No idea about Mac environment, but I guess it must be similar.

_zamorano_··on Writer Liu Cixin on How His Visions of the Future Collide with Reality
There's no way to tackle such an array of crazy concepts without being highly speculative and incurring in inconsistencies.

I guess you like better smaller plots, the author can make more consistent and believable.

To me, the way Liu links one after another crazy physics stuff into the book story is masterful. I've read most SF classics and there's nothing like that. That in itself is an accolade.

Heck, several times I had to browse Wikipedia to see whether the next mad stuff had any scientific background, to find most had.

_zamorano_··on Is alternate-day fasting superior to calorie restriction in lean adults?
It's not. That idea is obsolete and is very easy to prove.

Take patient A in a control room and make him eat 2000K calories a day. Take patient B into the exact same environment, eating the same calories.

Apply insulin shots only to patient B

Patient B will get fat, and patient A won't, eating the exact same calories.

_zamorano_··on The delights and the dangers of deplatforming extremists
There's an Spanish Twitter user, who mostly writes against, gender equality regulations in Spain and violence against women, by men.

I'm yet to see a rude or unpolite message by him. He's composed, respectful and logical and exposes his reasoning calmly.

But, as he is vocal against the goverment (no matter the party in charge, is the same) and mainstream media, he's been suspended by Twitter several times.

It's puzzling to me he's been categorized the same as real misfits, trolls and so.

But seems like speaking against the majority has costs, no matter the epoch you live in.

_zamorano_··on Follow boring advice
Because emotions rules.

It doesn't matter that you know what you have to do, eat well, do exercise, how to prioritize, what's good for you and what's not.

Unless you steer your emotions in the right direction, you won't be able to achieve anything, because resistance and stregth of will won't get you very far.

And changing your emotions is really hard, because they're mostly formed in your youth, and doing so need a systematic approach, consistency, and strengh of will... and that's precislesly what you lack; a vicious cycle.

_zamorano_··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
Spaniard here.

Here, If you are aware of new wokeness trends in the US is question of about 3 months until the spanish left and media start parroting the new word, idea or whatever.

The consumed culture is overwhelmingly US based. Netflix, social media... The local shows that happen to succeed, mostly are created due to legal obligations imposed by the goverment. If it were not for that...

_zamorano_··on Intel's Lidar, face recognition, and tracking cameras will be discontinued
I've been working with Realsense depth cameras for a while, and was mostly pleased with the software, hardware and the ecosystem. Intel developers and engineers seems to be trying hard.

But at the same time I was wondering how, for a behemoth like Intel, that's been making huge profits by selling high volume products with also a high profit margin, such a tiny market, with reasonable priced cameras, is going to satisfy its shareholders.

I guess the answer is here, and won't take long for the whole program to get the axe.

Wondering what will I do if I keep on working on this project

_zamorano_··on Give to Thunderbird
I've been using TbSync for the last couple of years, and CalDav works flawlessly for me.
_zamorano_··on Give to Thunderbird
Spaniard here. The donation page thinks I'm mexican. Changed to es-ES but didn't work at the first time. The paypal link seems to do nothing.

Tried browsing from google.es and again it was set to Mexico, though this time I was able to donate after changing to Spain.

_zamorano_··on How does one get hired by a top cybercrime gang?
Shockingly to me, in many fields, Google results are bare.

Coming from IT, in the industry, even questions about software (very specialized, to be honest) get useless results.

I think the openess of information in software is the exception, not the norm, though many fields like science are making improvements.

_zamorano_··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
I agree. In my case, living in a medium size city of Spain, I get a 30 minute commute from to the office, driving on a very good condition highway, on low-medium density traffic.

For me, a relaxing listening audiobooks while safely driving is like a warm-up for my workday. An activity I wouldn't have time otherwise.

And the same, in my way back home.

_zamorano_··on Tech giants join call for funding U.S. chip production
If they thought the risk of building a fav and launching a business was reasonable, they'd already have.

They acknowledge the importance of the issue, but are not willing to take risks in a difficult an foreign (to them) business.

So, mostly worthless words.

_zamorano_··on Ask HN: How to build empathy?
And how about too empathic people?

They're never talked about, and seem like they don't exist... but they do, and usually lead miserable lifes due to their insistence in an excessive identification with others people problems.

They look bland, and most don't take them seriously, and sometimes are the laughing stock... and to be honest, I don't think society is to blame, as they don't fall near the middle of the normalcy curve... but they do have a problem.

Anyway, they're out of luck. Not in the fashionable side of the victim mentality of nowadays society.
