_thisdot··on The Rise of Whatever
I have this turned on in my code editors and Obsidian. The main advantage is reducing the cognitive load. You don’t have to double-check whether you remembered to close your string, bracket, or parenthesis — it’s just there.
_thisdot··on Fakespot shuts down today after 9 years of detecting fake product reviews
Do they know where we live? Aren't orders fulfilled by Amazon?
_thisdot··on Fakespot shuts down today after 9 years of detecting fake product reviews
I’ve never bought from AliExpress, but I’m pretty sure everyone does this. Customers are mostly looking for product reviews, not reviews on sellers. For example, take a mouse from Logitech. Even if five sellers sell the product, it’s better to show product reviews for every item. Isn’t that so?

This is already a thing with Gemini in Chrome[0].

The Browser Company’s new browser, Dia[1], is supposedly another similar product

_thisdot··on Apple Notes Expected to Gain Markdown Support in iOS 26
It most definitely does. If you're using your gmail account as your AppleID. You can find all your notes unencrypted under a Gmail label called Notes
_thisdot··on Apple Notes Expected to Gain Markdown Support in iOS 26
I went this way as well. I used to try and make all my notes in Notion. But found the lack of offline support and the mobile app very limiting. Then I tried Apple Notes with a framework called "Forever Notes". Obsidian does everything Forever Notes does but better.
_thisdot··on As a developer, my most important tools are a pen and a notebook
I used to have a hybrid setup of paper as an offloading tool + Notion as a knowledge management system. However, since moving to Obsidian, I've never felt the need to use paper. Adding a line item in my daily note is much faster and efficient for me
_thisdot··on How Kerala got rich
The camaraderie is amusing! When they banned beef in Bangalore, the entirety of Malayalis there continued to collectively call beef something else and that system worked wonderfully!
_thisdot··on How Kerala got rich
It's a misconception that Kerala has majority Christian/Muslim population. Kerala has ~55% Hindus and ~25% Muslims and ~20% Christians.

There are also very good third-party replacements for cmd+tab. the one I use is called Contexts. Improves the experience massively
_thisdot··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
What other popular stores exist? And I assume you sideload those books to Kobo afterwards? In that case, is the experience of reading sideloaded books inferior to that of reading store bought books?
_thisdot··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
What are the prices compared to Amazon's? Books are generally cheaper here in the subcontinent. I did a price comparison of 30 books and found out that Kindle editions cost significantly lesser than Kobo. And Kobo editions cost slightly higher than paperbacks.

The total amount for these 30 randomly selected books came to: Paperback price: ₹13,017 (~$149) Kobo price: ₹13,252 (~$152) Kindle price: ₹9,171 (~$105)

_thisdot··on Ask HN: Do the tarrifs impact software/SaaS? If so, how?
> American consumers are the ones footing the bill, not the Corporate who pass the cost

I see this a lot. Obviously, the idea is to create market space for local companies to compete in with a clear advantage.

I think India before 1990s used to have nearly 200% tariffs (I am not entirely sure on the numbers, but it was absurdly high). This did not fare well for India because quality products made in countries like US and Japan were incredibly expensive. Some companies got around this by forming alliances with local companies leading to companies like (Maruti-Suzuki, Hero-Honda, Mahindra-Ford, etc.)

But US seems to me in a position where they can impose tariffs on some competing countries and reasonably expect their local market to occupy the space created

_thisdot··on We're bringing Pebble back
Ideally, in LTR locales, we move from left to right. This means that objects appear from the right side of the screen (as going forward would mean going right), and a back button is more intuitively perceived on the left side.

IIRC, Political Content is by default restricted on Threads. But if someone you follow engages with or posts content that is political in nature, fb doesn't hide that for you
_thisdot··on Most iPhone owners see little to no value in Apple Intelligence so far
Image Playground is available for iPhones too. I haven't used it on the Mac yet. But I've send people their AI generated images and everyone's been pretty impressed by it
_thisdot··on Sitters and Standers
There is just one problem. It'd have been good if they asked for your country before the questionnaire. $30,000 salary for a Software Developer seems less in America, but that is huge in some other countries

Taking a look right now. I found the source code from another comment in this HN thread. Would be better if you linked it in app
_thisdot··on How I write code using Cursor
My experience has been different. My major use case for AI tools these days is writing tests. I've found that the generated test cases are very much in line with the domain. It might be because we've been strictly using domain driven design principles It even generates test cases that fail to show what we've missed
_thisdot··on Steve Ballmer was an underrated CEO
It's a mystery to me why they haven't made Windows free yet. Surely they make much more money from users using Windows than buying Windows
_thisdot··on Unit tests as documentation
What is wrong with this? Tests involve a lot of hardcoding and mocking. I see this as an excellent use case for AI.
_thisdot··on GM electric vehicles can now access Tesla Superchargers
I find the inverse interesting too. US Brands trying to sell in foreign markets. India, for instance, has a lot of Asian and European brands. But the two American brands we did have, Chevrolet and Ford, had to leave India. They were decently popular back when they were here. And I still drive a Chevy Spark from 2012.

Ford is trying to make a comeback now though

_thisdot··on Sleep on it: How the brain processes many experiences, even when 'offline'
The Book The Sleep Solution or Why We Sleep touches on this. It also claims that REM sleep is a core part of this experience. The analogy that I found most useful is that REM sleep writes data from the cache to hard disk. In the process it cleanses that data reducing the emotional overload attached with it.

Say you just experienced grief. Dreaming about it is an essential in the process of getting over it.

REM sleep is inhibited when you use sleeping pills or alcohol.

_thisdot··on Did you lose your AirPods?
Here in India, on iPhones, it displays the city when you get a call from an unknown number.

Not sure how it’s done. Maybe there’s a code system.

Also for the biggest service provider, it always displays Ahmedabad as the city for some reason.

_thisdot··on What are the Olympics shooting competitors wearing on their faces?
I would’ve expected this to be the norm in shooting sports. Shooting is more skill and experience based, less physically demanding, and age might prove advantageous
