_mhr_··on Ask HN: Do you still miss your RIM BlackBerry?
No one has yet mentioned the Blackberry Priv, an Android phone with a quality keyboard sold as recently as 2016. I loved it so much, but it recently stopped holding charge among other issues, so I had to get a new Samsung. I type an order of magnitude slower now, and I write constantly. But there is no alternative. I don't know if you guys are aware, but https://www.onwardmobility.com/ is supposed to release a new Android BlackBerry phone this year, although I got tired of waiting, because from what I recall, they kept pushing back the release date.

It's amazing how there's definitely a large section of the market who would buy a phone with a decent keyboard, but there's zero interest from the companies. Instead, we get the innovation of (what are in my opinion) gimmicky clam phones with two screens.

My point was that it's difficult for an instrument designer to build a piano from scratch, even understanding the idea behind it, without opening one up and seeing how it works first. I understand the Alan Kay-esque hesitation to avoid having a community crystallize around what's perceived by its creators as just a prototype (referencing Kay's unhappiness with Smalltalk's relative lack of innovation over the decades).

But there's only a single piano available at the moment.

I can easily see my heartbeat in my vision by staying still and concentrating. Everything shifts slightly with each pulse, you just don't notice because the overwhelming vibrations contributed by ordinary life interfere with the weak signal of the heartbeat. But how can you train yourself to see white blood cells? What do you look for?

You have a B2B service for helping companies form habits, and a consumer-facing app for breaking a specific kind of habit (phone/social media addiction), but I think a hybrid would be killer: A consumer-facing app for both forming and breaking any sort of habit for an individual person, whether that's sleep, exercise, diet, conscientiousness, etc.

_mhr_··on TextQL: Execute SQL Against CSV or TSV
This is a great idea. There are so many APIs and text dumps from websites and databases that are XML, and it would be nice to be able to query them with regular relational operations. I'll be following your project! I will say that I believe a streaming backend would be more suitable, since most of the XML dumps I'm thinking of are humongous and won't always fit in memory.
_mhr_··on Evolution Is the New Deep Learning
That's a very interesting hypothesis, thank you for the link. However, it doesn't seem to support what you're claiming about mutations, from my cursory reading. Can you provide a source for this claim that random mutation is a bad source of variation?

http://extendedevolutionarysynthesis.com/about-the-ees/why-i... explicitly rejects the idea of a revolution regarding mutation and other genetic sources of variation:

> How can the EES seek 'profound change' and yet disavow 'revolution'?

> All recognized causes of both evolution (e.g. natural selection, genetic drift, mutation, etc) and inheritance (e.g. genes), as well as the vast body of empirical and theoretical findings generated by the field of evolutionary biology, are accepted by the EES.

> Hence the EES does not entail a rejection of current understanding within the field, and does not require revolution. The EES seeks only to supplement the existing causal framework through recognition of additional causes of evolution (e.g. developmental bias) and inheritance (e.g. epigenetic inheritance), entirely complementary to those long-established within the field. Nevertheless, should these additional processes prove to be important, the conceptual change to evolutionary biology could very well be fundamental.

Although not in your source, I did find the following. Known as Drake's rule: as a genome's size increases, the mutation rate also tends to decrease. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genome_size#Drake's_rule. A recent update to Drake's rule suggests that mutation rate is also negatively correlated with population size too, not just genome size (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3494944/). And another interesting article about mutation in reproduction: https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms15183 (somatic mutation is two orders of magnitude higher than germline mutation). This is intriguing, though I have to wonder how the genome ever grows if mutation supposedly becomes so strict over time as to become a non-factor (transposons, gene duplication?). It's worth noting that mutations do occur more frequently in non-coding sections of the genome, which may not be accounted for in the studies I've linked to.

Still, regardless of my sources, I would like to see you provide support from specifically EES proponents for the devaluation of mutation as a source of genetic variation, as you implied.

I don't think it works that way, either. When you reach for a door, do you first think "I'm going to reach for that door," in English? Or do you just think it wordlessly? For me, personally, when I inspect how I'm thinking, I really do think wordlessly a lot of the time. It's only in communicating my thoughts to others that my ideas become verbalized, or if I'm in a verbalizing mood, I might be talking to myself. But when I've gone hours without talking to someone, I'm probably not going to verbalize much in my head.
