So happy to hear you’re giving CG a shot as well! That attitude and image of “Campfire Bach” is excellent, are you practicing BWV 999 Prelude in Dm yet? That was my first intro to Bach - such a wonderful tune, and a little easier than other Bach pieces for guitar.

I’ve heard really great things about Mearns’ arrangement of the Chaconne (which I’m tackling now, against my better judgment). I gave it a very brief read and thought it was interesting with campanella fingerings, but thought the change to E minor is a little too out there for me right now. I might take another look now, though! Thank you for the reminder :)

I've been passionate about learning classical guitar for a few years, but that's really ramped up since COVID lockdowns. I'm working through a standardized exam system, and completed my grades 5, 6, 7 and recently, 8.

During part of the process I realized that I wanted to get feedback on my raw practice sessions - think 30 minutes warming up with C major scales, followed by an hour working on one line of a piece - so I started streaming on Twitch and posting incremental progress videos to YouTube and TikTok (@jcpractices everywhere). That's been an incredible experiment - the "hobbyist classical music practice streamer" space is a niche^5, but my small growing community is so encouraging to keep going.

According to my new teacher (who also streams!), I'm playing at the senior recital level at an average university, or at the 1st year level of a student at conservatory. It feels like such a huge accomplishment as someone who started in the evenings after work at 25. I'll never be a "great player" or make meaningful money from it, but it's one of those hobbies that I plan to pursue for the rest of my life for the sheer enjoyment. I'm looking forward to seeing how far I can get.

_jcrossley··on Tracking Micro-Rhythmic Variation in Jazz Performances (2017)
Thanks for sharing this - as a former jazz musician I find this problem space fascinating, and have thought a lot about it in free time. Here's [1] another paper I found a little more approachable, stating that ratios between 1:1 to 3.5:1 are found in recordings.

I thought the infographic of # trials per year is really interesting - amazing that in January 2021 there have been 12 trials, when there were 11 in 2019 and 17 in 2020

I found this fascinating as well. Sounds like a hard problem to solve - I'm skeptical and surprised that "niacin, which elicits a physical sensation — usually a flushing response in the skin" was effective as a placebo
_jcrossley··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Enormous vim fan here. I’ve been toying with the idea of 1:1 “tutoring” of beginner vim and other Unix tools. If anyone might be interested in a free 1st lesson, send a DM!

_jcrossley··on Show HN: Pixelist, an iOS habit tracker inspired by bullet journaling
Hey all! First time submitter here, would love to get any thoughts on my first published sideproject. Pixelist is an iOS habit tracker inspired by the simplicity and aesthetics of bullet journaling. It'll always be 100% free and login/tracking/ad-free, but I plan to add a tip jar someday.

I released this app a while back and at the time hesitated to Show HN yet another habits app, but with 2020 and New Years on everyone's minds I think it's relevant. I've had some really positive reception via reviews and emails so far (pixelistapp@gmail.com), so I hope some HN'ers might enjoy it as well.

A couple of things that make Pixelist different than other trackers are:

1) It recommends a 3-color system to track habits. It's designed to be flexible to your own meanings, like "Walked 10k steps / Went to the gym / Hiked Yosemite" or "Read 30m, Read 60m, Finished a book". I like to think of this as "are you just staying busy or are you accomplishing things?"

2) Over time, it builds some unique visualizations, like a collection of vertical stripes to show months over time, or nested squares ala Josef Albers. So far I've tried to avoid the common "Longest streak" and line-charts of most apps, because personally I find those boring.

Would really appreciate any feedback! Wishing a happy and healthy 2021

_jcrossley··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you like listening to?
I listen to Sleep With Me sporadically - it’s great for some funny, surreal stories while winding down away from screens before bed.

Pod Save America is pretty funny with high production value if you’re like-minded with their politics. Former Obama staff members, so it’s very much an echo chamber, but still an entertaining way to stay on top of recent events. Also by Crooked Media is a daily 15min show What A Day, mostly very lighthearted and fun.

Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield’s podcasts are cool if you’re interested in guided meditations with Buddhist philosophy/dharma talks, as opposed to “just” guided meditations from Headspace etc. More rooted in American/Vipassana secular-ish Buddhism.

My gf pursuing psychiatry turned me on to Psychology In Seattle, which is really eye opening to me to hear about clinical work. Learned a lot about empathy from that one.

The Lyft Mobile podcast is also a great peek into what it’s like to work on their amazing team (I left recently).

_jcrossley··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Agreed, 4 is my favorite. Then maybe 2,1,3,5. Enormous fan here
