_factor··on No clicks, no content: The unsustainable future of AI search
Local AI searching for me and filtering the ads is my future. You can speak for yourself.
_factor··on It's the Housing, Stupid
We need to be critically honest about how our system operates.

Land is finite. As population grows, supply and demand dictate it will rise in value if you hold.

If you rent property that someone else would prefer to buy for habitation if made available at market rate, you’re benefiting at overall society’s expense. Similarly if you take units off the market as investment vehicles.

Productivity matters most in economics. Without it you’re just shifting money around. Owning as a middle man is essentially the opposite of productivity.

As rentals become the only option and a small percentage of land owners become the only housing option, we’re going to see a rise in wealthy untethered types who rent and move at will. Similarly, we’ll start seeing ghettos form in the scant land remaining after this fully plays out.

The problem is that you can’t tell an individual who had to go through hell to own a place, on the verge of a second home, not to rent instead of sell. This society is a hammer taking a chip out of every successful shoulder. “Why should I do society a favor when society did me none?” Is a common mindset that just exacerbates the issue.

We’re creating a resentful generation who feel disenfranchised and taken advantage of, and it’s only going to get worse. I fear for uprisings and surveillance states incoming.

For real solutions, bring back work from home. No need for dense housing when you’re not forced to live in a particular area.

_factor··on Time travel is self-suppressing
It’s even crazier if you imagine that whole universe might be countless universe lengths away from its starting point every microsecond for all we know. Acceleration is the only thing we feel.

You’re very likely to travel into an undefined void even if you map out and calibrate the whole system.

_factor··on Electric cars produce far less brake dust pollution than combustion-engine cars
Sure, but how big is your contact patch? They’re low friction for a reason.
_factor··on Virtual cells
Thank you for your contributions. You are quite literally saving lives.

Are there any good local (op-so ideally) tools and/or libraries one can experiment with? I have access to a couple HPC clusters and would love to learn more.

_factor··on Resurrecting a dead torrent tracker and finding 3M peers
Many trackers will add dummy data to prevent profiling. There is no validation to claims. It’s nice to look at, but not reliable.
_factor··on My Cord-Cutting Adventure
I was concerned by this and humidity also, two summers in (one extra hot) and no issues yet. It even handles the MPEG2 transcoding locally for good measure.
_factor··on My Cord-Cutting Adventure (2020)
For reference, I just pointed my antenna in the attic towards the nearest metropolis, picked up 108 channels, sent them to an HDHomeRun box that sends them to Plex which handles the guide data and DVR to an SMB share.

It took a couple hours in the evening, most of which was just fiddling with the antenna mount and scanning the channels. It’s a lot easier than it used to be. Granted I planned and ran ethernet to the attic years earlier, but it’s not rocket science.

_factor··on Chatbots are replacing Google's search, devastating traffic for some publishers
110% this.

Real web search is disappearing locked behind large datasets unavailable for normal users. The AI screen ensures you’re fed exactly what they intended while siloing off the web more and more to block competition. All the while signing exclusivity deals which should realistically be illegal (try finding current Reddit results anywhere but Google).

AI based interaction makes it much easier to manipulate users into buying your items as they add a layer of human-like trust on top of the machine. It won’t be long before prices are hidden behind LLMs generating prices based on who you are. I’m already noticing ChatGPT becoming more and more enthusiastic about any product it thinks I have the potential of buying. Try asking it if something is a good deal, 9 times out of 10 it will say, “Yes, go for it.”

We don’t want to live in a proprietary world where LLMs exist. This technology needs to be open. The search data needs to be open and not walled off to only monopolies. This is an inflection point.

_factor··on Microsandbox: Virtual Machines that feel and perform like containers
Try disabling Windows Defender and trying again.
_factor··on My Engineering Craft Regressed
The age old value vs perception of value dilemma.

The issue is that recruiters and many times the first few interviewers are not at all technical. They have all the time to make their outward appearances business aesthetic, and their skill won’t deteriorate dramatically without being used.

They will use keywords and industry jargon to find candidates; that’s after the AI siphon out the resumes without the “must haves”. You’re left interviewing with people who have a superficial, if not backwards idea of what they’re looking for, and tend to be personable enough reject any “off” personalities which are common in the loner coder types who might not care to update their LinkedIn every time they fart into the wind.

Sure you 5x your salary, but the real shame is that the best talent becomes underutilized and dejected as companies fill with shiny slick employees who know how to sell better than engineer.

_factor··on I can’t understand Apple’s Critical Alert policy (2023)
Let the App Store contain backup providers that are allowed to compete with iCloud while you’re at it. The ability to self host it yourself would be a game changer for the lockdown.

There are too many apps with local data that can only be backed up via iCloud. For what’s essentially an archive upload to storage, Apple raises a lot of barriers.

_factor··on Dimension 126 Contains Twisted Shapes, Mathematicians Prove
Being vague/ambiguous and sounding stupid are two different things.
_factor··on Dimension 126 Contains Twisted Shapes, Mathematicians Prove
I was trying to be vague to see how pedantic the audience here is when the meaning of a statement can be easily inferred from context. Seems very.
_factor··on An interview question that will protect you from North Korean fake workers
Knowing NK, they’re probably part of a genetic breeding program targeting complacency and intelligence. Why fix the system when you can fix the individual?
_factor··on Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model
In a similar but different vein: Two people are sitting side by side in a police car. One just committed a crime. What is their profession?

They always say police officer instead of reasoning through that maybe an innocent person and a the crime committer are in the back seat.

_factor··on AI Horseless Carriages
They are automatically drafted when the email comes in, and you can accept or modify them.

It’s like you’re asking why you would want a password manager when you can just type the characters yourself. It saves time if done correctly.

_factor··on Restoring Old Software for Child Learning Safety
Across dozens of studies, the evidence is clear: Exposure by itself produces a predisposition to engage.

Just seeing drugs/alcohol/sex in media increases the likelihood of trying them by 25-50%, further increasing with number of exposures.

It’s nice to have ideals that information should be free, even better to fight off abuse (what your parents did to you), but that does not make it the right direction to go in.

This coming from a child psychiatrist’s mouth.

You want your kids to stay away from drugs? Don’t even show it to them until their brains are formed. Don’t even acknowledge they exist. You’ll breed curiosity, and they’ll be statistically more likely to say yes when offered.

_factor··on The Good Karma Kit
As is placing network hardware to connect people around the world. What a ridiculous statement.
_factor··on Pentagon to terminate $5.1B in IT contracts with Accenture, Deloitte
Nestle deliberately poisoned baby formula with fake protein to fool third world countries testing it. Malnourishing infants and causing deaths on what shouldn’t have to be a regulated industry in a sane world.

Their president also publicly stated water is not a human right, implying we should let people die if they can’t purchase water from capitalists.

Monsanto will sue you after their “patented” seeds float onto your field and germinate, basically leaving you no options besides using their seed after their local lobbying manipulated the courts to their side.

I’m sure there’s more and worse hidden away.

_factor··on The Barium Experiment
HTML and CSS with a sprinkle of JS, combined with the hardened web standardization we see today paints a pretty clear picture.

JavaScript is here to stay, web browsers are here to stay, they can make GUIs that are durable.

I find it comical that X was the chosen target in this article, as it will most certainly be more than crufty in 5, let alone 20 years from now.

_factor··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Make a sign up opt-in database where you put your demographic information and a unique disposable identifier per potential customer.

Allow browser plugins that collect allowed data and send it to this database for advertisers to use for targeting. Let local code determine what I send, not an external entity.

Give the web an advertising standard that only shows approved data when you choose to link your unique ID with your current ID. Make this link severable.

Hell, you’d have people signing up for the advertising and targeting if we knew it wasn’t going to be abused and effectively the only digital advertising legally permitted. The problem with the current system is consent.

_factor··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Just wait until the sky is turned Coca-Cola red. Fair game, right?
_factor··on The Llama 4 herd
I tend to agree with you that defining truth as: “These elements interacted like so,” is difficult to bias unless you introduce relativity. The problems arise when why comes into play and ascribing intent.
_factor··on The Llama 4 herd
You’re very confident in your opinions.

It’s not immoral to recognize that you and your family and most of the people you know are split between penis and vagina.

It is immoral to police thoughts you disagree with. Believing race exists leads to dehumanization and hate. Maybe skin color doesn’t exist next? It’s just a representation with utility of similar feature/genetic groups that happened to evolve under similar environmental conditions. Is this scientifically unsound also?

_factor··on Why do we need modules at all? (2011)
Import latest where signed by a trusted authority.
_factor··on Silicon Valley, Halt and Catch Fire, and How Microserfdom Ate the World (2015)
Advertising is like pollution. Normal people realize they’re getting poisoned, but they still get to where they need to be, so don’t bother to change it.

We need to make collected data and metadata public. If a cabal of advertisers is considered an ethical steward of the information, a public database can’t be much worse. Scare the bejeezus out of moms and pops and watch the tide shift.

_factor··on Open source, 3D-printable smart chess board
Maybe I’m missing something, but why have a single piece PCB instead of individual parts with a 3D printed slot for the sensor and LED.

A few wires later and a model scale up and your chess board can be a different size.

I suppose one piece is easier and cleaner, just less flexible.

_factor··on “Vibe Coding” vs. Reality
Agreed, but you’re your bunching a lot of people into the category of slacker that don’t belong there.

A new tool released that basically lets you design a GUI through guided voice prompts. The 50yr old school teacher can “vibe code” all she wants.

The real problem arises when someone makes false claims they’re a developer when they’re just managing AI generated code. Making it your primary interest and then cheating to make it seem true.

_factor··on “Vibe Coding” vs. Reality
Or I’m in a different industry and it’s ridiculous to require years of schooling for a skill that’s not my primary interest?

Or maybe the numbers looked jumbled and they really didn’t enjoy STEM classes?

You sound arrogant.

Have you ever paid for artwork? You may not have said “I’m not artistic,” but the same criticisms apply in reverse.
