_cenw··on Threads edges out X in daily mobile users, new data shows
My pet theory is that it's just because don't have a critical mass of iOS users to make iMessage viable and still wanted features at least half a decade before RCS got to a usable state.
_cenw··on Anthropic disabled my account after payment cancer patient/medical data trapped
The problem with rate limiting with money is always that it's also going to be too much for someone else to pay (or too little for others).

I'm so glad ICANN banned silent auctions for the next round of gTLDs.

_cenw··on Every GitHub object has two IDs
The problem is that GitHub gives admin access to the person who clicked the create repository button personally and then calls it a day.

And the only real way around this is to make people create repositories elsewhere, on a self-service dashboard.

_cenw··on Every GitHub object has two IDs
I remember a time when the v3 API didn't even have IDs and whenever someone in your org changed their username or renamed a repo you'd be left guessing who it is.

This is also the reason I wrote our current user onboarding / repo management code from scratch, because the terraform provider sucks and without any management you'll have a wave of "x got offboarded but they were the only admin on this repo" requests. Every repo is owned by a team. Access is only ever per-team.

_cenw··on Code Is Clay
qed on the lack of imagination.
_cenw··on Code Is Clay
It seems silly to blame globalism and automation. These should be good things. More production with less should be good. There is another culprit, one that has been smoldering for centuries. Most creative work has already been commodified, because capitalism is incapable of seeing value in art other than what is can be exploited for and the system is very unkind to whomever is not productive in a very specific way. AI is just very potent accelerant.

I guess it really is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.

_cenw··on Eat Real Food
Arguing with someone who is intellectually dishonest is also usually unproductive (unless you know what you're doing and want to convince bystanders). So it's more of a tie.
_cenw··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
Did some of that today. Extracting logic from Helm templates that read like 2000s PHP and moving it to a nushell script rendering values. Took a lot of guidance both in terms of making it test its own code and architectural/style decisions and I also use Sonnet, but it got there.
_cenw··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
I guess we'll forever wonder how much of the lack of turnout was due to backing the wrong party outside a swing state.
_cenw··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Nope, I will not get myself dragged into this mud, except maybe to say that by the numbers, "not voting" won.
_cenw··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
We both know this is an imperfect statement without getting into a lecture about representative democracy or voting modalities.
_cenw··on Professional software developers don't vibe, they control
Is anyone else getting more mentally exhausted by this? I get more done, but I also miss the relaxing code typing in the middle of the process.
_cenw··on How we lost communication to entertainment
> When I should be engaging with the real world and people in my life.

While I appreciate the sentiment, I don't think you need to couple "offline interaction" with this criticism. As a neurodivergent person in more than one way I appreciate being able to interact with people that face similar challenges to me and understand me. The problem is that social media is increasingly designed to not facilitate that, but content distribution.

_cenw··on How we lost communication to entertainment
I don't get the hangup on having multiple accounts. The point of AP is that you can read any kind post, not create any kind of post.

There is a truth to consumption over communication, but that is in the destruction of third spaces and the increasing difficulty in making friends. The fediverse is a force against that in my view, even if it has some of the creature comforts of regular social media.

_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
Personally. Not extrapolating from whatever toxic waste you consume online.

My bet is that you're not even in California. But even if you are. What hardship has an open definition of sex to include gender identity and expression inflicted upon you. Please, be specific.

_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
I am not going to be an advocate for any company in that way if they willingly work with people that want to stomp out my rights or even my existence. I did recommend Framework Laptops to my work colleagues, friends and family. I wouldn't be doing that. You are of course correct that other companies are also bad, but Framework positions themselves as an explicit outsider to that system and they provide me with less direct value. It's not solely transactional to support them, it's a political stance. And it is unfit for me to position myself to support them. So I'll just go with the lowest bidder instead.

I would've been fine with it had there been a correction, but Nirav didn't even acknowledge the issue. His posts in the big megathread (for which they purposefully chose to merge into the one with the most incendiary name to make the entire point look bad) only address general sponsorships and Hyprland, a community that, from what I hear, has improved a lot. No word on their biggest sponsor check ever going to RubyCon. No word on Omarchy, a distro Nirav seems to have a personal stakes in (filed bugs, keeps interacting with DHH, keeps glazing them on social media).

My existence (in a literal way, in an access to HRT way, in a not being declaring as "inherently sexual" to be ejected from public life way... pick something) depends on enough people taking a strong stance against fascist rhetoric, and conversely not shrugging it off as "just some opinion". Of course I will prioritize that.

_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
Name a law that fits this category that'd personally affect you.
_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
A Framework 13. I haven't replaced it yet.

And you missed the point. I believed in the "mission" of Framework. That was my primary motivation to buy one. But their stance here is not compatible with that. So I may as well buy a product that has more practical upsides for me. You know, when I actually have to replace my 7840U. Probably not anytime soon.

_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
You can believe whatever bioessentialist crap you want as long as you leave us alone.
_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
I am not fucking around when I say incompatible with my existence. Of course I don't mean getting murdered, but advocating conversion therapy gets pretty close.

https://world.hey.com/dhh/bad-therapy-08849dc9

I wouldn't be around if this was policy where I live (Let's put aside that the UK is in fact pretty fucked on that)

_cenw··on I'm returning my Framework 16
I actually agree with boycotts not being effective. I'm not exactly boycotting Framework - but I will not accept getting less value than I could get elsewhere for the signaling power for repairability anymore. I'm clearly very misaligned with their politics now, and Nirav wouldn't even address these concerns head-on (there is a thread; he posted in it; he hasn't mentioned Omarchy, RubyCon or DHH with one word).

It's unfortunate I feel similarly (though less strong) about Louis Rossman/FUTO, because I like it when right to repair has strong advocates.

_cenw··on Some Epstein file redactions are being undone
It seems insane that nobody at the other end runs something as simple as MAT or imagick (twice) over it to take the text layers out before uploading though. I hope this is at least partially intentional.
_cenw··on Ruby website redesigned
DHH praising himself in the testimonials, funny.
_cenw··on Systemd v259
They're very cool. I actually combine them with Nix. Because why not.

_cenw··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
Yeah. This is a reaction to providers like blacksmith or self-hosted solutions like the k8s operator being better at operating their very bad runner then them, at cheaper prices, with better performance, more storage and warm caches. The price cut is good, the anticompetitive bit where they charge you to use computers they don't provide isn't. My guess is that either we're all gonna move to act or that one of the SaaS startups sue.
_cenw··on JetBlue flight averts mid-air collision with US Air Force jet
Not really. I live next to an airport with both a civilian and military presence (and an alternate for a NATO airbase). The number of military/police flights that I can only see on MLAT is pretty worrying. I don't think BPol has ever turned their "stealth" switch off.
_cenw··on JetBlue flight averts mid-air collision with US Air Force jet
I always get the impression that whenever military/police have the option to turn off ADS-B, they do. Not just in the US or by US forces. Not just on sensitive flights. I don't think the toggle ever gets used.
_cenw··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
That "AI is just like your coworker / friend / companion" view is intentionally created by people who need the bubble part of AI to go as far as possible.

I only know about this TED Talk because it was in a mandatory training course for my work, but these is the kinds of things being said: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKNCiRWd_j0 (he's trying really hard with the Steve Jobs look)

_cenw··on Bye, Mom
Indeed. I only recognize the name from some pretty bad armchair psychology takes and hobby sociology on trans people a few years back. Nothing compared to what happens on X these days of course.

Still a worthwhile read.

_cenw··on Go Proposal: Secret Mode
My guess is that it just uses the existing finalizers and ensures the memory is overwritten.
