_benj··on Bitwarden introduces mandatory 2FA for new devices
Thank you!! I also hated the new copy icon!!
_benj··on Why is Cloudflare Pages' bandwidth unlimited?
I find myself often suspicious of "free" tiers, because it seems to be that 1. the terms can change at any time or 2. "free" can be removed at any time.

I had used CF Pages and I really really liked all the tools it gave me, but free didn't sit well with me. I switched to CDN bunny.net for hosting my personal site and DNS and I pay $1/mo, which is their monthly minimun payment. It doesn't have facny stuff like github intergation or such, but I feel more at peace actually knowing what I'm paying for.

I wish CF would have a personal pricing level, I'd be more than happy to pay them and have a customer relationship instead of a freemium user relationship with them!

No rust either?
_benj··on Ask HN: How is your job search going? (January 2025)
I personally gave up on attempting to find a job. I’ve been learning about trading and my best buddy trades for a living, so I’m jumping full time on that because might as well…

The usual disclaimers apply about losing money etc etc… but apart from the job situation I’ve been getting more and more disillusioned my the tech industry, or rather, big tech and all the crap that has infected what seems like every tech company.

I don’t have any recommendations apart from, explore alternate source of income, I’m working, apart from trading on at Etsy shop and some electronic projects.

It’s also been a good time (since Medicaid is better than any other health insurance) to work on my mental health as well. It is hard to find motivation to do anything when I’m looking at over a decade of experience that I have now being almost worthless…

_benj··on A New Logo for Perl
Oh wow! That looks fantastic!
_benj··on A New Logo for Perl
I always find it interesting when people assume that just because something is out of their awareness is dead…

I learned Perl not too long ago and it is an absolute beast at text processing, a lot less annoying than Python and pip install and cpan seems to have everything in it, implemented multiple times.

The language doesn’t hold your hand at all, doesn’t have tooling like fancy LSP and such, but it is quite usable. With that said, I’d probably hate to use it in a team since you can do the same thing in a dozen different ways!

_benj··on Crystal Ball Trading Game
This is a fun read!

I think something interesting about the news and its supposedly predictive power is that the market already discount the news.

If you look at the daily and weekly charts for SP500, it has been on a bill run, for a bunch of unknowable factors but I suspect one of them is the expected rate cut from the fed. Now, if the cut was, for example 50 bsp, instead of 25 that would be news indeed, but the again, last rate cut the prices jump sharply exactly at 1 PM EST, meaning that computers, not humans, read the report and placed hundreds of orders in milliseconds after the report was released.

IMHO knowing the future 1 day ahead is not enough because in that timeframe the market has already discounted the news.

_benj··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
I quite enjoy selling stuff n Etsy. The products and buyers there are not on a race to the bottom for the absolute cheapest thing (maybe it is so in things like shirts or mug or whatever) but instead I see the buyers as people expecting and unique thing that resonates with them.

So I think the key is unique and then using keywords, videos and Etsy ads are not bad to get some traction, even for a brand new store

_benj··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2024 – Show and tell
I guess it is survivorship bias, but I’d never be one of the survivors if I don’t even try.

I have an Etsy product, Christmas tree ornament, has made about $600 gross last year and another $400 or so this year…

It’s not much but now I have an Etsy shop with 5 start reviews all across. Planning to make a few more non-seasonal products and see where I can take it.

But, I also have a graveyard on my GitHub!

I guess the stats are like 9/10 entrepreneurial projects fail… so if I try 20 things…

_benj··on Launch HN: Double (YC W24) – Index Investing with 0% Expense Ratios
Hi, and congrats on the launch!

I'm curious about how this service compares to, say, the offerings of zero expense mutual funds from Fidelity of Schwab? I guess there's a lot more variety since I don't think those brokers have 50+ indexes.

Have you found or might expect to find liquidity issues or spread costs with fractional shares? I imagine that if you have an account with, say, $3000 that is trying to implement S&P500, the portfolio will me mostly if not exclusively fractional shares.

About positioning, I don't think I'd be the target audience since I just buy and hold $SPY, $VOO, $IVV. If you could convince me that I could implement, say, S&P 500 and be cheaper, more tax effective than holding those ETFs, that would be something interesting!

_benj··on Willow, Our Quantum Chip
> So Quantum Computing, could bring us a future where, when you perform a Google search for a word, the web pages returned actually contain the word you searched for.

Lol! I'm not gonna put a kagi plug here...

_benj··on Willow, Our Quantum Chip
This comment reminded me of the TV show I've been recently watching on Netflix, Pantheon. It's about a different technical breakthrough (I don't want to put any spoilers), but it's also something that completely alters society, no security is able to deal with that new technology, first thing that happens is that the technology is weaponized... etc.

Idk enough about quantum computing to even understand this... but a technology that turns, say, AES or Blowfish, suddenly trivial to crack would very likely change the world

_benj··on A mental model for Linux file, hard and soft links
Wow, this was super helpful!

I’ve always have that underlying question of “why is it always ln -s” and ln -s just became a muscle memory without any reason.

Good post!

_benj··on Fedora KDE Desktop Spin Promoted to Same Tier as Gnome-Based Fedora Workstation
fair enough. I would have picked something more minimal but LTS is indeed a big advantage!
_benj··on Fedora KDE Desktop Spin Promoted to Same Tier as Gnome-Based Fedora Workstation
Yeah! Some time ago I saw in a taco bell screen an Ubuntu boot screen, looked like something where wrong on the booting process, but was fascinated to see that the drive through screen was on Linux…

I wouldn’t have chosen Ubuntu for that… but that’s just me :-)

_benj··on Fedora KDE Desktop Spin Promoted to Same Tier as Gnome-Based Fedora Workstation
That is great news! I moved to KDE about a year ago and was blown away by how refined and customizable the experience is. Won’t be moving away from Void but I’m glad to see KDE having more mainstream access and support!
_benj··on Research reveals new clues to the mysteries of long Covid
> Elahi adds that in a previous study, his team discovered that some long COVID patients had a deficiency in two amino acids, sarcosine and serine, that have anti-inflammatory functions and neuroprotective effects. Both are available as food supplements that can be purchased at health-food stores or online.

> “Some patients who have taken them have claimed signs of improvement.”

_benj··on Pretty.c
Uff, I’m so sorry to hear! I can see how that joke could be really not funny for someone that has gone through some crappy stuff.

I hope you stay strong as you work through such a rough life-changing diagnosis.

_benj··on Pretty.c
> The goals for Pretty C are:

> Provide so much syntactic sugar as to cause any C developer a diabetes-induced heart attack.

:-D

_benj··on Ask HN: What's the most creative 'useless' program you've ever written?
I wrote a CHIP 8 emulator using C.

At the time I wanted to learn C but it led down a rabbit whole of algorithms and graphics programming (I used raylib and later SDL) and some immediate mode GUI (nuklear and another one I can’t remember) and it was TONS of fun and incredibly educational!

It kind of reminded me what was it that I actually liked about programming, that is, learning, applied said learning into solving problems and creating things!

_benj··on Web Browser Engineering (2021)
It is so exciting to see material like this being made!

Browsers seem like mysterious, undecipherable black boxes, which is very likely how G wants them to be perceived, but that is cracking by seeing the efforts/results of such projects like ladybird and others!

I hope to one day be able to jump in and contribute to break that moat! And this books looks like an amazing start!

_benj··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
There are too many…

But I’ll pick The Psychology of Money. There are few books that have so drastically changed my view of reality and affected my behavior.

(Bonus because I couldn’t help myself: Getting things done, Man’s search for meaning, Surrounded by idiots)

_benj··on GnuCash 5.9
I tried some time ago GnuCash after getting tired of plain text accounting.

I’m not sure what it was but I couldn’t get it working for me. Tried HomeBank afterwards and was blown away by how accessible it is in comparison.

I might give another try at GnuCash to track something like business/project expenses but it was rather hard to use for my personal finances.

_benj··on Have you ever seen soldering this close? [video]
That is really cool! I haven't tried hot plates because I didn't really have faith that solder would actually pull the component down and align it. I think this video might have improved that faith :-)
_benj··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
Makes sense… my note taking is more like highlighting and such, since I later get those out into my project documentation
_benj··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
I had an iPad Air, which I changed for a reMarkable 2 and I couldn't be happier! I see a lot of people here commenting about the limitations of it, and I get it. For me personally those limitations are features.

My needs are mostly note taking and reading technical PDFs, and for that the reMarkable is fantastic. I used it extensively while taking Calculus, which, it was great to use as many pages as I needed and to write as big as I wanted without worrying about "wasting" paper.

I miss background light from time to time, which I think is a great addition.

I'm not super familiar with alternatives so I can't say that is better than X or Y, but I personally have been moving as much as I can to single purpose electronic devices. That allows me to be more focus and not fight my device wanting to distract me. That takes out every eInk table that has android for me, I don't want a yet another multipurpose device that I need to develop discipline to use it!

On that line, I love my kindle, but that spends about 90% of the time in airplane mode, because, again, the kindle is for readin, the reMarkable for taking notes and reading Datasheets and such...

But, that's just me :-)

_benj··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
I like this idea. I'm guessing that it might be trying to learn math from proofs? or from first principles? I'm trying to figure out how could I find where to learn math in this way?
_benj··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
I’m curious about what that “preliminary knowledge” is? I’ve read stuff like a mathematician delight and the Joy of X and it’s such a beautiful, attractive but seemingly unattainable realm of knowledge.

As an example, this is the math that I’m aware of and have been exposed to:

Arithmetic Algebra Geometry Trigonometry Calculus

I’m vaguely aware of linear algebra but haven’t studied it (it also seemed unattainable)

I’m also aware of discrete mathematics and even bought the book concrete mathematics by Knuth, only to be totally stuck in the very first example of recursion and the tower of Hanoi…

So, what is that preliminary knowledge and how does one goes about acquiring it?

From where I sit sometime it feels like I don’t what I don’t know and I don’t even know how to ask how to learn what I don’t know I don’t know

_benj··on Zen, a Arc-like open-source browser based on the Firefox engine
I use workspaces in Vivaldi and they are pretty much a set of tabs that I can switch as a set, but all under the same profile. As an example, in my dev workspace I have GitHub, localhost, and a few other things I might need. In another workspace in have Google calendar, Jira, gmail, etc… I can switch workspaces and it will switch all of the current tabs in my browser.

But, I’m logged in, say, in the same GitHub or Google account across workspace.

Profiles on the other hand (I’ve used those on Arc) change where you are logged in… so I can be logged in to my work gmail on one profile, and to my personal gmail on another.

Personally I don’t find profiles that useful just for the fact that I simply use different browsers for personal and work… but a use case for profiles is, for example, to be signed in as admin and user to your local dev web application and test things between the two just by changing tabs instead of having to logout and login

_benj··on Pragtical: Practical and pragmatic code editor
Just the fact that they did such an amazing job with their documentation is as huge win for me!

I really liked Lite XL but back when I looked at it it was a challenge to understand it’s API and functionality.

Looking forward to give this a spin!
