Goes by other names. You probably have an anonymous ethics line
_alex_··on Every engineer should do a stint in consulting
I have a similar but different thing I tell people: I think engineers should do a stint as a product manager. Spending time trying to solve problems on "the other side of the table" forces you to learn a lot about the business impact that different design, implementation, and prioritization decisions makes. Two years in Product made me a better engineer than the previous 5 years of cranking out features.

Thats not to say that a career product person will immediately be a good engineer. You need to be good at writing software. But if you get to a point in your career where you think your learning has kind of leveled out, go do a tour in product.

_alex_··on My £4 a month server can handle 4.2M requests a day
tl;dr: a machine with 2 GB of ram that is doing pulling a blog post out of a DB and passing it through Django can do ~50tps

Im thinking about making the same switch. What app are you using on the ipad that makes your notes searchable?
_alex_··on Coinbase outages
why not power per dollar transferred? transactions per 10 minute period is relatively constant over time. The thing that increases the energy usage is the price of bitcoin.

It's a dumb metric.

_alex_··on Coinbase outages
Volatility up, coinbase down
_alex_··on Coinbase outages
The power per tx metric is a dumb metric. Power usage doesnt increase or decrease per tx

most of the time I need to read it, I use the PDF generation. It turns all the ascii into math symbols. way easier to read
_alex_··on Ethereum Isn't Fun Anymore
There are several lightning network (payment channel layer on top of bitcoin) paywalls where you can pay 1/10 of a cent to read an article. The tech exists, its now an adoption problem
_alex_··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
There are ASICs for Bitcoin and other coins that use SHA. Ethereum and other "later" cryptocurrencies using hashing algorithms that are memory-hard and there aren't efficient ASICs for those. If you're mining Ethereum or ZCash or something, you're using GPUs
_alex_··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
you must have had some REALLY bad captcha experiences to put it on the same scale as war
_alex_··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Gold's market cap isn't driven by industrial use.
_alex_··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
Many assets start volatile and become more stable over time. As more money comes into bitcoin and the market cap goes up, it's reasonable to assume that volatility will go down.
_alex_··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
the key technical innovation that bitcoin gave us (that ethereum and other systems took to the next level) is a replicated state machine shared by untrusted peers. That's a huge deal for decentralized systems. It turns out that economics is a good way to keep network participants honest.
_alex_··on Object-Oriented Programming Is the Biggest Mistake of Computer Science
Null is probably a bigger mistake.
_alex_··on Intel Problems
dev in a linux vm/container on your M1 macbook, then deploy to a graviton instance.
_alex_··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
The first amendment protects you from the government: you can't be prosecuted for things you say (then there are some case-law carve outs for inciting violence, etc).

The first amendment does not prevent businesses from terminating a relationship.

edit: my opinions are my views and dont represent anyone elses

I'm making a wild-ass-guess here, but it sounds like when you clicked "forgot password" it would text you a code to punch in to verify your identity. It sounds like that part failed open. So once twillio went away, any code would succeed.

_alex_··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
Where's my password reset email? Hasn't come through yet because the email-miner is still searching for the right nonce
_alex_··on Ask HN: Why isn't email spam solved using Proof of Work yet?
if you're blocklisting/allowlisting addresses _anyway_, then spam isn't a problem. just block everything that's not on the allowlist
